2.52.51
த்வத்க்ருதே ந மயாऽவாப்தம் ரதசர்யாக்ருதம் ஸுகம் ।
ஆஸம்ஸே த்வத்க்ருதே நாஹம் வநவாஸக்ருதம் ஸுகம் ॥
tvatkṛtē na mayā'vāptaṃ rathacaryākṛtaṃ sukham ।
āṡaṃsē tvatkṛtē nāhaṃ vanavāsakṛtaṃ sukham ॥
By your grace I had the joy of driving the chariot.
I hope likewise, by your grace, to
taste the joys of life in Vana.
2.52.52
ப்ரஸீதேச்சாமி தேऽரண்யே பவிதும் ப்ரத்யநந்தர: ।
ப்ரீத்யாऽபிஹிதமிச்சாமி பவ மே ப்ரத்யநந்தர: ॥
prasīdēcchāmi tē'raṇyē bhavituṃ pratyanantaraḥ ।
prītyā'bhihitamicchāmi bhava mē pratyanantaraḥ ॥
Take pity on me, I wish to be by your side in the forest.
Let me hear you say with pleasure, ‘Be with me!’
2.52.53
இமே சாபி ஹயா வீர! யதி தே வநவாஸிந: ।
பரிசர்யாம் கரிஷ்யந்தி ப்ராப்ஸ்யந்தி பரமாம் கதிம் ॥
imē cāpi hayā vīra! yadi tē vanavāsinaḥ ।
paricaryāṃ kariṣyanti prāpsyanti paramāṃ gatim ॥
And if these horses too, O Veera,
serve you while you live in Vana,
will attain the best of the best in the worlds beyond.
2.52.54
தவ ஸுஸ்ரூஷணம் மூர்த்நா கரிஷ்யாமி வநே வஸந் ।
அயோத்யாம் தேவலோகம் வா ஸர்வதா ப்ரஜஹாம்யஹம் ॥
tava ṡuṡrūṣaṇaṃ mūrdhnā kariṣyāmi vanē vasan ।
ayōdhyāṃ dēvalōkaṃ vā sarvathā prajahāmyaham ॥
Living in the forest, I shall serve you
with my head bowed all the way down.
For that, I will relinquish Ayōdhyā in every way
and even the world of Dēvas, for that matter.
2.52.55
ந ஹி ஸக்யா ப்ரவேஷ்டும் ஸா மயாऽயோத்யா த்வயா விநா ।
ராஜதாநீ மஹேந்த்ரஸ்ய யதா துஷ்க்ருதகர்மணா ॥
na hi ṡakyā pravēṣṭuṃ sā mayā'yōdhyā tvayā vinā ।
rājadhānī mahēndrasya yathā duṣkṛtakarmaṇā ॥
It would be no easier for me
to enter Ayōdhyā without you
than it is for someone who committed evil
to enter the capital city of the great Indra.
2.52.56
வநவாஸே க்ஷயம் ப்ராப்தே மமைஷ ஹி மநோரத: ।
யதநேந ரதேநைவ த்வாம் வஹேயம் புரீம் புந: ॥
vanavāsē kṣayaṃ prāptē mamaiṣa hi manōrathaḥ ।
yadanēna rathēnaiva tvāṃ vahēyaṃ purīṃ punaḥ ॥
The dream that I cherish is to take you to the city again,
in this very chariot, at the end of life in Vana!
2.52.57
சதுர்தஸ ஹி வர்ஷாணி ஸஹிதஸ்ய த்வயா வநே ।
க்ஷணபூதாநி யாஸ்யந்தி ஸதஸங்க்யாந்யதோऽந்யதா ॥
caturdaṡa hi varṣāṇi sahitasya tvayā vanē ।
kṣaṇabhūtāni yāsyanti ṡatasaṅkhyānyatō'nyathā ॥
Living with you in the Vana
fourteen years shall pass in an instant;
or else they will feel like a hundred such.
2.52.58
ப்ருத்யவத்ஸல! திஷ்டந்தம் பர்த்ருபுத்ரகதே பதி ।
பக்தம் ப்ருத்யம் ஸ்திதம் ஸ்தித்யாம் த்வம் ந மாம் ஹாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
bhṛtyavatsala! tiṣṭhantaṃ bhartṛputragatē pathi ।
bhaktaṃ bhṛtyaṃ sthitaṃ sthityāṃ tvaṃ na māṃ hātumarhasi ॥
I am a loyal dependant and follower of the son of my master.
Firm in my devotion, I do everything that is expected of me.
Hence, you, known for your affection to your staff,
must not abandon me.
2.52.59
ஏவம் பஹுவிதம் தீநம் யாசமாநம் புந: புந: ।
ராமோ ப்ருத்யாநுகம்பீ து ஸுமந்த்ரமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
ēvaṃ bahuvidhaṃ dīnaṃ yācamānaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ।
rāmō bhṛtyānukampī tu sumantramidamabravīt ॥
When he thus helplessly pleaded again and again
in as many ways as possible,
Rāma, who was full of compassion for his staff,
responded with these words to Sumantra:
2.52.60
ஜாநாமி பரமாம் பக்திம் மயி தே பர்த்ருவத்ஸல ।
ஸ்ருணு சாபி யதர்தம் த்வாம் ப்ரேஷயாமி புரீமித: ॥
jānāmi paramāṃ bhaktiṃ mayi tē bhartṛvatsala ।
ṡṛṇu cāpi yadarthaṃ tvāṃ prēṣayāmi purīmitaḥ ॥
I know the immense devotion you have for me!
I know that you have the utmost affection for your master!
But listen, I will tell you why
I am sending you back to the city from here!
2.52.61
நகரீம் த்வாம் கதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஜநநீ மே யவீயஸீ ।
கைகேயீ ப்ரத்யயம் கச்சேதிதி ராமோ வநம் கத: ॥
nagarīṃ tvāṃ gataṃ dṛṣṭvā jananī mē yavīyasī ।
kaikēyī pratyayaṃ gacchēditi rāmō vanaṃ gataḥ ॥
Seeing you back in the city,
the youngest of my mothers, Kaikēyee,
will feel assured that Rāma
has, for sure, left for the Vana.
2.52.62
பரிதுஷ்டா ஹி ஸா தேவீ வநவாஸம் கதே மயி ।
ராஜாநம் நாதிஸங்கேத 'மித்யாவாதீ'தி தார்மிகம் ॥
parituṣṭā hi sā dēvī vanavāsaṃ gatē mayi ।
rājānaṃ nātiṡaṅkēta 'mithyāvādī'ti dhārmikam ॥
When assured that I have gone to live in the forest,
the lady, vastly pleased, will no longer have to
suspect the King, who is a Dhārmika, to be of empty words.
People who read Ādi Ṡaṅkarācārya’s works are familiar with the phrase Mithyāvādī (मिथ्यावादी) in a different way.
The generic meaning of this word, however, is very simple. It means ‘a person of empty words’.
2.52.63
ஏஷ மே ப்ரதம: கல்போ யதம்பா மே யவீயஸீ ।
பரதாரக்ஷிதம் ஸ்பீதம் புத்ரராஜ்யமவாப்நுயாத் ॥
ēṣa mē prathamaḥ kalpō yadambā mē yavīyasī ।
bharatārakṣitaṃ sphītaṃ putrarājyamavāpnuyāt ॥
My foremost goal is to ensure that
the youngest of my mothers sees the
vast kingdom under the protection of her son Bharata.
2.52.64
மம ப்ரியார்தம் ராஜ்ஞஸ்ச ஸரதஸ்த்வம் புரீம் வ்ரஜ ।
ஸந்திஷ்டஸ்சாஸி யாநர்தாம்ஸ்தாம் ஸ்தாந் ப்ரூயாஸ்ததா ததா ॥
mama priyārthaṃ rājñaṡca sarathastvaṃ purīṃ vraja ।
sandiṣṭaṡcāsi yānarthāṃstāṃ stān brūyāstathā tathā ॥
You must go to the city with the chariot
to please me and the King.
Please convey verbatim,
all the messages that are conveyed to you.
2.52.65
இத்யுக்த்வா வசநம் ஸூதம் ஸாந்த்வயித்வா புந: புந: ।
குஹம் வசநமக்லீபோ ராமோ ஹேதுமதப்ரவீத் ॥
ityuktvā vacanaṃ sūtaṃ sāntvayitvā punaḥ punaḥ ।
guhaṃ vacanamaklībō rāmō hētumadabravīt ॥
Having thus answered the charioteer and
pacifying him with repeated exhortations,
Rāma, firm in his resolve, spoke
these reasonable words to Guha:
2.52.66
நேதாநீம் குஹ யோக்யோऽயம் வாஸோ மே ஸஜநே வநே ।
ஆவஸ்யம் ஹ்யாஸ்ரமே வாஸ: கர்தவ்யஸ்தத்கதோ விதி: ॥
nēdānīṃ guha yōgyō'yaṃ vāsō mē sajanē vanē ।
āvaṡyaṃ hyāṡramē vāsaḥ kartavyastadgatō vidhiḥ ॥
It would not be proper for me to live
in this Vana, which is inhabited by people.
I must live in an Āṡrama and follow
the rules governing that life.
2.52.67-68a
ஸோऽஹம் க்ருஹீத்வா நியமம் தபஸ்வி ஜநபூஷணம் ।
ஹிதகாம: பிதுர்பூய: ஸீதாயா லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய ச ।
ஜடா: க்ருத்வா கமிஷ்யாமி ந்யக்ரோதக்ஷீரமாநய ॥
sō'haṃ gṛhītvā niyamaṃ tapasvi janabhūṣaṇam ।
hitakāmaḥ piturbhūyaḥ sītāyā lakṣmaṇasya ca ।
jaṭāḥ kṛtvā gamiṣyāmi nyagrōdhakṣīramānaya ॥
Hence, in doing what is good for
the father, and also to Seetā and to Lakshmaṇa
I must accept the discipline
that is considered as the glory of people who do Tapa.
I shall proceed further only with matted locks.
Please fetch me the sap of banyan tree!
2.52.68b-69
தத் க்ஷீரம் ராஜபுத்ராய குஹ: க்ஷிப்ரமுபாஹரத் ।
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்யாத்மநஸ்சைவ ராமஸ்தேநாகரோஜ்ஜடா: ।
தீர்கபாஹுர்நரவ்யாக்ரோ ஜடிலத்வமதாரயத் ॥
tat kṣīraṃ rājaputrāya guhaḥ kṣipramupāharat ।
lakṣmaṇasyātmanaṡcaiva rāmastēnākarōjjaṭāḥ ।
dīrghabāhurnaravyāghrō jaṭilatvamadhārayat ॥
And Guha immediately brought the sap to that prince.
Rāma matted his locks as well as Lakshmaṇa’s with the sap.
Thus that tiger among men, of long arm, came to wear matted hair.
2.52.70
தௌ ததா சீரவஸநௌ ஜடாமண்டலதாரிணௌ ।
ஆஸோபேதாம்ருஷிஸமௌ ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
tau tadā cīravasanau jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇau ।
āṡōbhētāmṛṣisamau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
Thus the duo of brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
clad in robes of bark and with matted hair
coiled on their heads, glowed like Ṛshis.
2.52.71
ததோ வைகாநஸம் மார்கமாஸ்தித: ஸஹ லக்ஷ்மண: ।
வ்ரதமாதிஷ்டவாந் ராம: ஸகாயம் குஹமப்ரவீத் ॥
tatō vaikhānasaṃ mārgamāsthitaḥ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
vratamādiṣṭavān rāmaḥ sakhāyaṃ guhamabravīt ॥
Then, launched into the way of life laid out by Vikhanas,
along with Lakshmaṇa , he adopted the required discipline.
Then he said to his friend Guha:
The procedures laid by Vikhanas are followed even today in many a temple, including in Tirupati.
2.52.72
அப்ரமத்தோ பலே கோஸே துர்கே ஜநபதே ததா ।
பவேதா குஹ ராஜ்யம் ஹி துராரக்ஷதமம் மதம் ॥
apramattō balē kōṡē durgē janapadē tathā ।
bhavēthā guha rājyaṃ hi durārakṣatamaṃ matam ॥
Be ever vigilant with regard to the army,
the treasury, the citadel and the realm.
For, the protection of a State is
regarded as an immensely difficult task.
2.52.73
ததஸ்தம் ஸமநுஜ்ஞாய குஹமிக்ஷ்வாகுநந்தந: ।
ஜகாம தூர்ணமவ்யக்ர: ஸபார்ய: ஸஹ லக்ஷ்மண: ॥
tatastaṃ samanujñāya guhamikṣvākunandanaḥ ।
jagāma tūrṇamavyagraḥ sabhāryaḥ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
Then, the delight of Ikshwāku dynasty
bid farewell to Guha and started his journey
along with his wife and Lakshmaṇa immediately,
with no disquiet whatsoever.
2.52.74
ஸ து த்ருஷ்ட்வா நதீதீரே நாவமிக்ஷ்வாகுநந்தந: ।
திதீர்ஷு: ஸீக்ரகாம் கங்காமிதம் லக்ஷ்மணமப்ரவீத் ॥
sa tu dṛṣṭvā nadītīrē nāvamikṣvākunandanaḥ ।
titīrṣuḥ ṡīghragāṃ gaṅgāmidaṃ lakṣmaṇamabravīt ॥
Seeing the boat at the landing-place,
the delight of Ikshwāku dynasty,
wishing to cross the swift-flowing Gaṅga, said to Lakshmaṇa;
2.52.75
ஆரோஹ த்வம் நரவ்யாக்ர ஸ்திதாம் நாவமிமாம் ஸநை: ।
ஸீதாம் சாரோபயாந்வக்ஷம் பரிக்ருஹ்ய மநஸ்விநீம் ॥
ārōha tvaṃ naravyāghra sthitāṃ nāvamimāṃ ṡanaiḥ ।
sītāṃ cārōpayānvakṣaṃ parigṛhya manasvinīm ॥
O tiger among men! Please get slowly
on to this boat which is ready.
Hold the sensitive Seetā and assist her on board.

லக்ஷ்மணஸ்யாத்மநஸ்சைவ ராமஸ்தேநாகரோஜ்ஜடா: ।
தீர்கபாஹுர்நரவ்யாக்ரோ ஜடிலத்வமதாரயத் ॥
tat kṣīraṃ rājaputrāya guhaḥ kṣipramupāharat ।
lakṣmaṇasyātmanaṡcaiva rāmastēnākarōjjaṭāḥ ।
dīrghabāhurnaravyāghrō jaṭilatvamadhārayat ॥
And Guha immediately brought the sap to that prince.
Rāma matted his locks as well as Lakshmaṇa’s with the sap.
Thus that tiger among men, of long arm, came to wear matted hair.
2.52.70
தௌ ததா சீரவஸநௌ ஜடாமண்டலதாரிணௌ ।
ஆஸோபேதாம்ருஷிஸமௌ ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
tau tadā cīravasanau jaṭāmaṇḍaladhāriṇau ।
āṡōbhētāmṛṣisamau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
Thus the duo of brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
clad in robes of bark and with matted hair
coiled on their heads, glowed like Ṛshis.
2.52.71
ததோ வைகாநஸம் மார்கமாஸ்தித: ஸஹ லக்ஷ்மண: ।
வ்ரதமாதிஷ்டவாந் ராம: ஸகாயம் குஹமப்ரவீத் ॥
tatō vaikhānasaṃ mārgamāsthitaḥ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
vratamādiṣṭavān rāmaḥ sakhāyaṃ guhamabravīt ॥
Then, launched into the way of life laid out by Vikhanas,
along with Lakshmaṇa , he adopted the required discipline.
Then he said to his friend Guha:
The procedures laid by Vikhanas are followed even today in many a temple, including in Tirupati.
2.52.72
அப்ரமத்தோ பலே கோஸே துர்கே ஜநபதே ததா ।
பவேதா குஹ ராஜ்யம் ஹி துராரக்ஷதமம் மதம் ॥
apramattō balē kōṡē durgē janapadē tathā ।
bhavēthā guha rājyaṃ hi durārakṣatamaṃ matam ॥
Be ever vigilant with regard to the army,
the treasury, the citadel and the realm.
For, the protection of a State is
regarded as an immensely difficult task.
2.52.73
ததஸ்தம் ஸமநுஜ்ஞாய குஹமிக்ஷ்வாகுநந்தந: ।
ஜகாம தூர்ணமவ்யக்ர: ஸபார்ய: ஸஹ லக்ஷ்மண: ॥
tatastaṃ samanujñāya guhamikṣvākunandanaḥ ।
jagāma tūrṇamavyagraḥ sabhāryaḥ saha lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
Then, the delight of Ikshwāku dynasty
bid farewell to Guha and started his journey
along with his wife and Lakshmaṇa immediately,
with no disquiet whatsoever.
2.52.74
ஸ து த்ருஷ்ட்வா நதீதீரே நாவமிக்ஷ்வாகுநந்தந: ।
திதீர்ஷு: ஸீக்ரகாம் கங்காமிதம் லக்ஷ்மணமப்ரவீத் ॥
sa tu dṛṣṭvā nadītīrē nāvamikṣvākunandanaḥ ।
titīrṣuḥ ṡīghragāṃ gaṅgāmidaṃ lakṣmaṇamabravīt ॥
Seeing the boat at the landing-place,
the delight of Ikshwāku dynasty,
wishing to cross the swift-flowing Gaṅga, said to Lakshmaṇa;
2.52.75
ஆரோஹ த்வம் நரவ்யாக்ர ஸ்திதாம் நாவமிமாம் ஸநை: ।
ஸீதாம் சாரோபயாந்வக்ஷம் பரிக்ருஹ்ய மநஸ்விநீம் ॥
ārōha tvaṃ naravyāghra sthitāṃ nāvamimāṃ ṡanaiḥ ।
sītāṃ cārōpayānvakṣaṃ parigṛhya manasvinīm ॥
O tiger among men! Please get slowly
on to this boat which is ready.
Hold the sensitive Seetā and assist her on board.
