Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 44
In the previous Sarga Kousalyā, overcome by grief, feels that life is unbearable for her.
In this Sarga, Sumitrā makes her feel better by reminding her of the innate strength and unwavering support that Rāma enjoys and by speaking reassuringly of his return and regaining the kingdom.
2.44.1 விலபந்தீ ததா தாம் து கௌஸல்யாம் ப்ரமதோத்தமாம் ।
இதம் தர்மே ஸ்திதா தர்ம்யம் ஸுமித்ரா வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
vilapantī tathā tāṃ tu kausalyāṃ pramadōttamām ।
idaṃ dharmē sthitā dharmyaṃ sumitrā vākyamabravīt ॥
As Kousalyā, the best among women, thus lamented,
Sumitrā, who was firmly grounded in Dharma,
spoke to her these words informed by Dharma: The word Dharma has many shades of meaning. It could mean righteous, appropriate, customary, responsible and so on. We should interpret it based on the context.
2.44.2 தவார்யே ஸத்குணைர்யுக்த: புத்ர ஸ்ஸ புருஷோத்தம: ।
கிம் தே விலபிதேநைவம் க்ருபணம் ருதிதேந வா ॥
tavāryē sadguṇairyuktaḥ putra ssa puruṣōttamaḥ ।
kiṃ tē vilapitēnaivaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ ruditēna vā ॥
Why are you lamenting and weeping like a helpless one?
This son of yours, O noble lady,
is the best among all men and endowed with all virtues! When adversity takes us down, we forget the big picture and all that is still intact, as it happens with Kousalyā here.
The context that Kousalyā is in repeats itself in everyone’s life, many a time.
A boy has his prized cricket bat. Just before the day of that ‘big’ match he is waiting for, something falls on it and it chips off. The boy feels that nothing is left in his life any more to live for.
A student prepares well for her exams ahead of time but falls sick a day before the exams and the scores get affected. She now trails behind ten of her peers and feels that nothing is left in her life any more to live for.
You experience many such situations in the course of life. From situation to situation, your turn could be to grieve like Kousalyā or console like Sumitrā.
When your turn is to console like Sumitrā, you will do an excellent job, by mastering the perfect script given in this Sarga, readymade for you:

2.44.3-4 யஸ்தவார்யே கத: புத்ரஸ்த்யக்த்வா ராஜ்யம் மஹாபல: ।
ஸாது குர்வந் மஹாத்மாநம் பிதரம் ஸத்யவாதிநம் ॥
ஸிஷ்டைராசரிதே ஸம்யக்சஸ்வத்ப்ரேத்யபலோதயே ।
ராமோ தர்மே ஸ்தித ஸ்ரேஷ்டோ ந ஸ ஸோச்ய: கதாசந ॥
yastavāryē gataḥ putrastyaktvā rājyaṃ mahābalaḥ ।
sādhu kurvan mahātmānaṃ pitaraṃ satyavādinam ॥
ṡiṣṭairācaritē samyakchaṡvatprētyaphalōdayē ।
rāmō dharmē sthita ṡrēṣṭhō na sa ṡōcyaḥ kadācana ॥
O noble lady, your son Rāma is mighty strong.
He abjured the kingdom to make his great father
be known as the keeper of his word.
He followed the path of all good men,
a path that leads even to a better afterlife.
There is nothing to be sad about that exemplary Rāma,
who is firmly established in Dharma.
2.44.5 வர்ததே சோத்தமாம் வ்ருத்திம் லக்ஷ்மணோऽஸ்மிந் ஸதாநக: ।
தயாவாந் ஸர்வபூதேஷு லாபஸ்தஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ॥
vartatē cōttamāṃ vṛttiṃ lakṣmaṇō'smin sadānaghaḥ ।
dayāvān sarvabhūtēṣu lābhastasya mahātmanaḥ ॥
The sinless Lakshmaṇa, who is
compassionate towards all creatures,
is always there to do the best for him,
which is an additional strength to that Mahātma.
2.44.6 அரண்யவாஸே யத்து:கம் ஜாநதீ வை ஸுகோசிதா ।
அநுகச்சதி வைதேஹீ தர்மாத்மாநம் தவாத்மஜம் ॥
araṇyavāsē yadduḥkhaṃ jānatī vai sukhōcitā ।
anugacchati vaidēhī dharmātmānaṃ tavātmajam ॥
The princess of Vidēha, who deserves all comforts,
accompanied your son, the Dharmātma,
knowing fully well the hardships of forest life.
2.44.7 கீர்திபூதாம் பதாகாம் யோ லோகே ப்ரமயதி ப்ரபு: ।
தர்மஸத்யவ்ரததந: கிம் ந ப்ராப்தஸ்தவாத்மஜ: ॥
kīrtibhūtāṃ patākāṃ yō lōkē bhramayati prabhuḥ ।
dharmasatyavratadhanaḥ kiṃ na prāptastavātmajaḥ ॥
Your son hoisted the flag of fame all around the world,
and he amassed a wealth of adherence to truth and Dharma.
What is there for him not to attain?
2.44.8 வ்யக்தம் ராமஸ்ய விஜ்ஞாய ஸௌசம் மாஹாத்ம்யமுத்தமம் ।
ந காத்ரமம்ஸுபிஸ்ஸூர்யஸ்ஸந்தாபயிதுமர்ஹதி ॥
vyaktaṃ rāmasya vijñāya ṡaucaṃ māhātmyamuttamam ।
na gātramaṃṡubhissūryassantāpayitumarhati ॥
Knowing fully well Rāma’s
immaculate purity and supreme greatness,
the sun would not, for sure,
burn his skin with his rays.
2.44.9 ஸிவஸ்ஸர்வேஷு காலேஷு காநநேப்யோ விநிஸ்ஸ்ருத: ।
ராகவம் யுக்தஸீதோஷ்ணஸ்ஸேவிஷ்யதி ஸுகோऽநில: ॥
ṡivassarvēṣu kālēṣu kānanēbhyō vinissṛtaḥ ।
rāghavaṃ yuktaṡītōṣṇassēviṣyati sukhō'nilaḥ ॥
Wholesome, comfortable and temperate breezes from the forest
would graciously fan Rāghava in all seasons.
2.44.10 ஸயாநமநகம் ராத்ரௌ பிதேவாபிபரிஷ்வஜந் ।
ரஸ்மிபிஸ்ஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஸந் ஸீதைஸ்சந்த்ரமாஹ்லாதயிஷ்யதி ॥
ṡayānamanaghaṃ rātrau pitēvābhipariṣvajan ।
raṡmibhissaṃspṛṡan ṡītaiṡcandramāhlādayiṣyati ॥
When the sinless one lies down at night,
the moon, enveloping him in his embrace like a father,
will caress him with the touch of his cool rays.
2.44.11-12 ததௌ சாஸ்த்ராணி திவ்யாநி யஸ்மை ப்ரஹ்மா மஹௌஜஸே ।
தாநவேந்த்ரம் ஹதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா திமித்வஜஸுதம் ரணே ॥
ஸ ஸூர: புருஷவ்யாக்ர: ஸ்வபாஹுபலமாஸ்ரித: ।
அஸந்த்ரஸ்தோऽப்யரணஸ்தோ வேஸ்மநீவ நிவத்ஸ்யதி ॥
dadau cāstrāṇi divyāni yasmai brahmā mahaujasē ।
dānavēndraṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā timidhvajasutaṃ raṇē ॥
sa ṡūraḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ svabāhubalamāṡritaḥ ।
asantrastō'pyaraṇasthō vēṡmanīva nivatsyati ॥
When the supremely radiant Rāma
killed the son of the chief of Dānavas,
whose flag bore the symbol of a whale,
Brahma gave him many celestial weapons.
Such a brave and mighty tiger among men,
can live even in the Vana as fearlessly as he would at home,
relying on the strength of his stout arms alone.
2.44.13 யஸ்யேஷுபதமாஸாத்ய விநாஸம் யாந்தி ஸத்ரவ: ।
கதம் ந ப்ருதிவீ தஸ்ய ஸாஸநே ஸ்தாதுமர்ஹதி ॥
yasyēṣupathamāsādya vināṡaṃ yānti ṡatravaḥ ।
kathaṃ na pṛthivī tasya ṡāsanē sthātumarhati ॥
All those that oppose him meet their end
in the trajectory of his flying arrows.
Hence, how can the earth but be amenable to his will?
2.44.14 யா ஸ்ரீஸ்ஸௌர்யம் ச ராமஸ்ய யா ச கல்யாணஸத்வதா ।
நிவ்ருத்தாரண்யவாஸ ஸ்ஸ க்ஷிப்ரம் ராஜ்யமவாப்ஸ்யதி ॥
yā ṡrīṡṡauryaṃ ca rāmasya yā ca kalyāṇasatvatā ।
nivṛttāraṇyavāsa ssa kṣipraṃ rājyamavāpsyati ॥
So fascinating is Rāma’s person,
so irresistible his prowess and
so abundant his strength,
that he is bound to gain the kingdom without delay
upon his return from the forest.
2.44.15-16 ஸூர்யஸ்யாபி பவேத்ஸூர்யோ ஹ்யக்நேரக்நி ப்ரபோ: ப்ரபு: ।
ஸ்ரிய: ஸ்ரீஸ்ச பவேதக்ர்யா கீர்தி: கீர்த்யா: க்ஷமாக்ஷமா ॥
தைவதம் தைவதாநாம் ச பூதாநாம் பூதஸத்தம: ।
தஸ்ய கே ஹ்யகுணா தேவி! வநே வாப்யதவா புரே ॥
sūryasyāpi bhavētsūryō hyagnēragni prabhōḥ prabhuḥ ।
ṡriyaḥ ṡrīṡca bhavēdagryā kīrtiḥ kīrtyāḥ kṣamākṣamā ॥
daivataṃ daivatānāṃ ca bhūtānāṃ bhūtasattamaḥ ।
tasya kē hyaguṇā dēvi! vanē vāpyathavā purē ॥
He is sun to the sun, fire to the fire and lord to the lords.
His riches define richness.
His renown sets the standard for fame.
His forbearance alone can be counted as forbearance.
He is the god for gods and the best among all beings.
Can anything go wrong, O lady,
for such a one, either in the Vana or in the city?
2.44.17 ப்ருதிவ்யா ஸஹ வைதேஹ்யா ஸ்ரியா ச புருஷர்ஷப: ।
க்ஷிப்ரம் திஸ்ருபிரேதாபி ஸ்ஸஹ ராமோऽபிஷேக்ஷ்யதே ॥
pṛthivyā saha vaidēhyā ṡriyā ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ ।
kṣipraṃ tisṛbhirētābhi ssaha rāmō'bhiṣēkṣyatē ॥
Very soon will Rāma, that bull among men,
be crowned along with all these three—
the earth, the wealth and the princess of Vidēha.
2.44.18-19 து:கஜம் விஸ்ருஜந்த்யஸ்ரம் நிஷ்க்ராமந்தமுதீக்ஷ்ய யம் ।
அயோத்யாயாம் ஜநாஸ்ஸர்வே ஸோகவேகஸமாஹதா: ॥
குஸசீரதரம் தேவம் கச்சந்தமபராஜிதம் ।
ஸீதேவாநுகதா லக்ஷ்மீ ஸ்தஸ்ய கிம் நாம துர்லபம் ॥
duḥkhajaṃ visṛjantyasraṃ niṣkrāmantamudīkṣya yam ।
ayōdhyāyāṃ janāssarvē ṡōkavēgasamāhatāḥ ॥
kuṡacīradharaṃ dēvaṃ gacchantamaparājitam ।
sītēvānugatā lakṣmī stasya kiṃ nāma durlabham ॥
The people of Ayōdhyā could not help being
overwhelmed by the impetuosity of their grief
and shed tears in sorrow, when he left.
Seetā, the embodiment of wealth, could not help but follow him,
even when he left wearing nothing but robes made of Kuṡa grass.
Would there be anything that is out of reach
for such a one who has never known defeat?
2.44.20 தநுர்க்ரஹவரோ யஸ்ய பாணகட்காஸ்த்ரப்ருத்ஸ்வயம் ।
லக்ஷ்மணோ வ்ரஜதி ஹ்யக்ரே தஸ்ய கிம் நாம துர்லபம் ॥
dhanurgrahavarō yasya bāṇakhaḍgāstrabhṛtsvayam ।
lakṣmaṇō vrajati hyagrē tasya kiṃ nāma durlabham ॥
With Lakshmaṇa himself
holding the bow, arrows, sword and armaments
walking ahead of him,
can there be anything that is out of reach for him?
2.44.21 நிவ்ருத்தவநவாஸம் தம் த்ரஷ்டாஸி புநராகதம் ।
ஜஹிஸோகம் ச மோஹம் ச தேவி! ஸத்யம் ப்ரவீமி தே ॥
nivṛttavanavāsaṃ taṃ draṣṭāsi punarāgatam ।
jahiṡōkaṃ ca mōhaṃ ca dēvi! satyaṃ bravīmi tē ॥
Trust me, O Queen, you shall see him
return from his stay in the Vana.
Throw off your sadness and gloom.
2.44.22 ஸிரஸா சரணாவேதௌ வந்தமாநமநிந்திதே !
புநர்த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி கல்யாணி! புத்ரம் சந்த்ரமிவோதிதம் ॥
ṡirasā caraṇāvētau vandamānamaninditē !
punardrakṣyasi kalyāṇi! putraṃ candramivōditam ॥
You shall see again, like the risen moon,
O blameless and auspicious one,
your son bowing his head to touch these feet.
2.44.23 புந: ப்ரவிஷ்டம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தமபிஷிக்தம் மஹாஸ்ரியம் ।
ஸமுத்ஸ்ரக்ஷ்யஸி நேத்ராப்யாம் க்ஷிப்ரமாநந்தஜம் பய: ॥
punaḥ praviṣṭaṃ dṛṣṭvā tamabhiṣiktaṃ mahāṡriyam ।
samutsrakṣyasi nētrābhyāṃ kṣipramānandajaṃ payaḥ ॥
Seeing him back in the city,
crowned and endowed with all opulence,
you will, before long, be shedding tears of joy.
2.44.24 மா ஸோகோ தேவி! து:கம் வா ந ராமே த்ருஸ்யதேऽஸிவம் ।
க்ஷிப்ரம் த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி புத்ரம் த்வம் ஸஸீதம் ஸஹலக்ஷ்மணம் ॥
mā ṡōkō dēvi! duḥkhaṃ vā na rāmē dṛṡyatē'ṡivam ।
kṣipraṃ drakṣyasi putraṃ tvaṃ sasītaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ॥
You must not lament or grieve, my lady;
nothing adverse will happen to Rāma.
You will soon see your son along with Seetā and Lakshmaṇa.
2.44.25 த்வயா ஸேஷோ ஜநஸ்சைவ ஸமாஸ்வாஸ்யோ யதாऽநகே!
கிமிதாநீமிதம் தேவி! கரோஷி ஹ்ருதி விக்லபம் ॥
tvayā ṡēṣō janaṡcaiva samāṡvāsyō yadā'naghē!
kimidānīmidaṃ dēvi! karōṣi hṛdi viklabam ॥
When you should console all these people,
O sinless one, how could you be tormented thus in your heart?
2.44.26 நார்ஹா த்வம் ஸோசிதும் தேவி! யஸ்யாஸ்தே ராகவஸ்ஸுத: ।
ந ஹி ராமாத்பரோ லோகே வித்யதே ஸத்பதே ஸ்தித: ॥
nārhā tvaṃ ṡōcituṃ dēvi! yasyāstē rāghavassutaḥ ।
na hi rāmātparō lōkē vidyatē satpathē sthitaḥ ॥
You must not grieve, my lady, you who have Rāghava for a son.
No one is above Rāma in treading the path of virtue.
2.44.27 அபிவாதயமாநம் தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸஸுஹ்ருதம் ஸுதம் ।
முதாऽஸ்ர்ரு மோக்ஷ்யஸே க்ஷிப்ரம் மேகலேகேவ வார்ஷிகீ ॥
abhivādayamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā sasuhṛdaṃ sutam ।
mudā'ṡrṛ mōkṣyasē kṣipraṃ mēghalēkhēva vārṣikī ॥
Seeing your son prostrate himself
in front of you along with his friends,
you will be soon be shedding tears of joy,
like a row of clouds in the monsoon season.
2.44.28 புத்ரஸ்தே வரத: க்ஷிப்ரமயோத்யாம் புநராகத: ।
பாணிப்யாம் ம்ருதுபீநாப்யாம் சரணௌ பீடயிஷ்யதி ॥
putrastē varadaḥ kṣipramayōdhyāṃ punarāgataḥ ।
pāṇibhyāṃ mṛdupīnābhyāṃ caraṇau pīḍayiṣyati ॥
Back in Ayōdhyā soon, your son, lord of bounty,
will again press your feet with his hands
that are so soft and plump.
2.44.29 அபிவாத்ய நமஸ்யந்தம் ஸூரம் ஸஸுஹ்ருதம் ஸுதம் ।
முதாऽஸ்ரை: ப்ரோக்ஷ்யஸி புநர்மேகராஜிரிவாசலம் ॥
abhivādya namasyantaṃ ṡūraṃ sasuhṛdaṃ sutam ।
mudā'sraiḥ prōkṣyasi punarmēgharājirivācalam ॥
You will be drenching your valiant son in tears of joy,
as the rain-cloud does the hills,
when he prostrates at your feet along with his friends.
2.44.30 ஆஸ்வாஸயந்தீ விவிதைஸ்ச வாக்யை-
ர்வாக்யோபசாரே குஸலாऽநவத்யா ।
ராமஸ்ய தாம் மாதரமேவமுக்த்வா
தேவீ ஸுமித்ரா விரராம ராமா ॥
āṡvāsayantī vividhaiṡca vākyai-
rvākyōpacārē kuṡalā'navadyā ।
rāmasya tāṃ mātaramēvamuktvā
dēvī sumitrā virarāma rāmā ॥
The charming and flawless lady Sumitrā,
who was skilled in words of consolation,
concluded with those words to Rāma’s mother.
2.44.31 நிஸம்ய தல்லக்ஷ்மணமாத்ருவாக்யம்
ராமஸ்ய மாதுர்நரதேவபத்ந்யா: ।
ஸத்யஸ்ஸரீரே விநநாஸ ஸோக:
ஸரத்கதோ மேக இவால்பதோய: ॥
niṡamya tallakṣmaṇamātṛvākyaṃ
rāmasya māturnaradēvapatnyāḥ ।
sadyaṡṡarīrē vinanāṡa ṡōkaḥ
ṡaradgatō mēgha ivālpatōyaḥ ॥
On hearing those words of Lakshmaṇa’s mother,
the grief that beset the wife of the lord of men, Rāma’s mother,
exited from her being,
like a wooly cloud when the post-monsoon season arrives.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே சதுஸ்சத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē catuṡcatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the forty-fourth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,

dayāvān sarvabhūtēṣu lābhastasya mahātmanaḥ ॥
The sinless Lakshmaṇa, who is
compassionate towards all creatures,
is always there to do the best for him,
which is an additional strength to that Mahātma.
2.44.6 அரண்யவாஸே யத்து:கம் ஜாநதீ வை ஸுகோசிதா ।
அநுகச்சதி வைதேஹீ தர்மாத்மாநம் தவாத்மஜம் ॥
araṇyavāsē yadduḥkhaṃ jānatī vai sukhōcitā ।
anugacchati vaidēhī dharmātmānaṃ tavātmajam ॥
The princess of Vidēha, who deserves all comforts,
accompanied your son, the Dharmātma,
knowing fully well the hardships of forest life.
2.44.7 கீர்திபூதாம் பதாகாம் யோ லோகே ப்ரமயதி ப்ரபு: ।
தர்மஸத்யவ்ரததந: கிம் ந ப்ராப்தஸ்தவாத்மஜ: ॥
kīrtibhūtāṃ patākāṃ yō lōkē bhramayati prabhuḥ ।
dharmasatyavratadhanaḥ kiṃ na prāptastavātmajaḥ ॥
Your son hoisted the flag of fame all around the world,
and he amassed a wealth of adherence to truth and Dharma.
What is there for him not to attain?
2.44.8 வ்யக்தம் ராமஸ்ய விஜ்ஞாய ஸௌசம் மாஹாத்ம்யமுத்தமம் ।
ந காத்ரமம்ஸுபிஸ்ஸூர்யஸ்ஸந்தாபயிதுமர்ஹதி ॥
vyaktaṃ rāmasya vijñāya ṡaucaṃ māhātmyamuttamam ।
na gātramaṃṡubhissūryassantāpayitumarhati ॥
Knowing fully well Rāma’s
immaculate purity and supreme greatness,
the sun would not, for sure,
burn his skin with his rays.
2.44.9 ஸிவஸ்ஸர்வேஷு காலேஷு காநநேப்யோ விநிஸ்ஸ்ருத: ।
ராகவம் யுக்தஸீதோஷ்ணஸ்ஸேவிஷ்யதி ஸுகோऽநில: ॥
ṡivassarvēṣu kālēṣu kānanēbhyō vinissṛtaḥ ।
rāghavaṃ yuktaṡītōṣṇassēviṣyati sukhō'nilaḥ ॥
Wholesome, comfortable and temperate breezes from the forest
would graciously fan Rāghava in all seasons.
2.44.10 ஸயாநமநகம் ராத்ரௌ பிதேவாபிபரிஷ்வஜந் ।
ரஸ்மிபிஸ்ஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஸந் ஸீதைஸ்சந்த்ரமாஹ்லாதயிஷ்யதி ॥
ṡayānamanaghaṃ rātrau pitēvābhipariṣvajan ।
raṡmibhissaṃspṛṡan ṡītaiṡcandramāhlādayiṣyati ॥
When the sinless one lies down at night,
the moon, enveloping him in his embrace like a father,
will caress him with the touch of his cool rays.
2.44.11-12 ததௌ சாஸ்த்ராணி திவ்யாநி யஸ்மை ப்ரஹ்மா மஹௌஜஸே ।
தாநவேந்த்ரம் ஹதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா திமித்வஜஸுதம் ரணே ॥
ஸ ஸூர: புருஷவ்யாக்ர: ஸ்வபாஹுபலமாஸ்ரித: ।
அஸந்த்ரஸ்தோऽப்யரணஸ்தோ வேஸ்மநீவ நிவத்ஸ்யதி ॥
dadau cāstrāṇi divyāni yasmai brahmā mahaujasē ।
dānavēndraṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā timidhvajasutaṃ raṇē ॥
sa ṡūraḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ svabāhubalamāṡritaḥ ।
asantrastō'pyaraṇasthō vēṡmanīva nivatsyati ॥
When the supremely radiant Rāma
killed the son of the chief of Dānavas,
whose flag bore the symbol of a whale,
Brahma gave him many celestial weapons.
Such a brave and mighty tiger among men,
can live even in the Vana as fearlessly as he would at home,
relying on the strength of his stout arms alone.
2.44.13 யஸ்யேஷுபதமாஸாத்ய விநாஸம் யாந்தி ஸத்ரவ: ।
கதம் ந ப்ருதிவீ தஸ்ய ஸாஸநே ஸ்தாதுமர்ஹதி ॥
yasyēṣupathamāsādya vināṡaṃ yānti ṡatravaḥ ।
kathaṃ na pṛthivī tasya ṡāsanē sthātumarhati ॥
All those that oppose him meet their end
in the trajectory of his flying arrows.
Hence, how can the earth but be amenable to his will?
2.44.14 யா ஸ்ரீஸ்ஸௌர்யம் ச ராமஸ்ய யா ச கல்யாணஸத்வதா ।
நிவ்ருத்தாரண்யவாஸ ஸ்ஸ க்ஷிப்ரம் ராஜ்யமவாப்ஸ்யதி ॥
yā ṡrīṡṡauryaṃ ca rāmasya yā ca kalyāṇasatvatā ।
nivṛttāraṇyavāsa ssa kṣipraṃ rājyamavāpsyati ॥
So fascinating is Rāma’s person,
so irresistible his prowess and
so abundant his strength,
that he is bound to gain the kingdom without delay
upon his return from the forest.
2.44.15-16 ஸூர்யஸ்யாபி பவேத்ஸூர்யோ ஹ்யக்நேரக்நி ப்ரபோ: ப்ரபு: ।
ஸ்ரிய: ஸ்ரீஸ்ச பவேதக்ர்யா கீர்தி: கீர்த்யா: க்ஷமாக்ஷமா ॥
தைவதம் தைவதாநாம் ச பூதாநாம் பூதஸத்தம: ।
தஸ்ய கே ஹ்யகுணா தேவி! வநே வாப்யதவா புரே ॥
sūryasyāpi bhavētsūryō hyagnēragni prabhōḥ prabhuḥ ।
ṡriyaḥ ṡrīṡca bhavēdagryā kīrtiḥ kīrtyāḥ kṣamākṣamā ॥
daivataṃ daivatānāṃ ca bhūtānāṃ bhūtasattamaḥ ।
tasya kē hyaguṇā dēvi! vanē vāpyathavā purē ॥
He is sun to the sun, fire to the fire and lord to the lords.
His riches define richness.
His renown sets the standard for fame.
His forbearance alone can be counted as forbearance.
He is the god for gods and the best among all beings.
Can anything go wrong, O lady,
for such a one, either in the Vana or in the city?
2.44.17 ப்ருதிவ்யா ஸஹ வைதேஹ்யா ஸ்ரியா ச புருஷர்ஷப: ।
க்ஷிப்ரம் திஸ்ருபிரேதாபி ஸ்ஸஹ ராமோऽபிஷேக்ஷ்யதே ॥
pṛthivyā saha vaidēhyā ṡriyā ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ ।
kṣipraṃ tisṛbhirētābhi ssaha rāmō'bhiṣēkṣyatē ॥
Very soon will Rāma, that bull among men,
be crowned along with all these three—
the earth, the wealth and the princess of Vidēha.
2.44.18-19 து:கஜம் விஸ்ருஜந்த்யஸ்ரம் நிஷ்க்ராமந்தமுதீக்ஷ்ய யம் ।
அயோத்யாயாம் ஜநாஸ்ஸர்வே ஸோகவேகஸமாஹதா: ॥
குஸசீரதரம் தேவம் கச்சந்தமபராஜிதம் ।
ஸீதேவாநுகதா லக்ஷ்மீ ஸ்தஸ்ய கிம் நாம துர்லபம் ॥
duḥkhajaṃ visṛjantyasraṃ niṣkrāmantamudīkṣya yam ।
ayōdhyāyāṃ janāssarvē ṡōkavēgasamāhatāḥ ॥
kuṡacīradharaṃ dēvaṃ gacchantamaparājitam ।
sītēvānugatā lakṣmī stasya kiṃ nāma durlabham ॥
The people of Ayōdhyā could not help being
overwhelmed by the impetuosity of their grief
and shed tears in sorrow, when he left.
Seetā, the embodiment of wealth, could not help but follow him,
even when he left wearing nothing but robes made of Kuṡa grass.
Would there be anything that is out of reach
for such a one who has never known defeat?
2.44.20 தநுர்க்ரஹவரோ யஸ்ய பாணகட்காஸ்த்ரப்ருத்ஸ்வயம் ।
லக்ஷ்மணோ வ்ரஜதி ஹ்யக்ரே தஸ்ய கிம் நாம துர்லபம் ॥
dhanurgrahavarō yasya bāṇakhaḍgāstrabhṛtsvayam ।
lakṣmaṇō vrajati hyagrē tasya kiṃ nāma durlabham ॥
With Lakshmaṇa himself
holding the bow, arrows, sword and armaments
walking ahead of him,
can there be anything that is out of reach for him?
2.44.21 நிவ்ருத்தவநவாஸம் தம் த்ரஷ்டாஸி புநராகதம் ।
ஜஹிஸோகம் ச மோஹம் ச தேவி! ஸத்யம் ப்ரவீமி தே ॥
nivṛttavanavāsaṃ taṃ draṣṭāsi punarāgatam ।
jahiṡōkaṃ ca mōhaṃ ca dēvi! satyaṃ bravīmi tē ॥
Trust me, O Queen, you shall see him
return from his stay in the Vana.
Throw off your sadness and gloom.
2.44.22 ஸிரஸா சரணாவேதௌ வந்தமாநமநிந்திதே !
புநர்த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி கல்யாணி! புத்ரம் சந்த்ரமிவோதிதம் ॥
ṡirasā caraṇāvētau vandamānamaninditē !
punardrakṣyasi kalyāṇi! putraṃ candramivōditam ॥
You shall see again, like the risen moon,
O blameless and auspicious one,
your son bowing his head to touch these feet.
2.44.23 புந: ப்ரவிஷ்டம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தமபிஷிக்தம் மஹாஸ்ரியம் ।
ஸமுத்ஸ்ரக்ஷ்யஸி நேத்ராப்யாம் க்ஷிப்ரமாநந்தஜம் பய: ॥
punaḥ praviṣṭaṃ dṛṣṭvā tamabhiṣiktaṃ mahāṡriyam ।
samutsrakṣyasi nētrābhyāṃ kṣipramānandajaṃ payaḥ ॥
Seeing him back in the city,
crowned and endowed with all opulence,
you will, before long, be shedding tears of joy.
2.44.24 மா ஸோகோ தேவி! து:கம் வா ந ராமே த்ருஸ்யதேऽஸிவம் ।
க்ஷிப்ரம் த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி புத்ரம் த்வம் ஸஸீதம் ஸஹலக்ஷ்மணம் ॥
mā ṡōkō dēvi! duḥkhaṃ vā na rāmē dṛṡyatē'ṡivam ।
kṣipraṃ drakṣyasi putraṃ tvaṃ sasītaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ॥
You must not lament or grieve, my lady;
nothing adverse will happen to Rāma.
You will soon see your son along with Seetā and Lakshmaṇa.
2.44.25 த்வயா ஸேஷோ ஜநஸ்சைவ ஸமாஸ்வாஸ்யோ யதாऽநகே!
கிமிதாநீமிதம் தேவி! கரோஷி ஹ்ருதி விக்லபம் ॥
tvayā ṡēṣō janaṡcaiva samāṡvāsyō yadā'naghē!
kimidānīmidaṃ dēvi! karōṣi hṛdi viklabam ॥
When you should console all these people,
O sinless one, how could you be tormented thus in your heart?
2.44.26 நார்ஹா த்வம் ஸோசிதும் தேவி! யஸ்யாஸ்தே ராகவஸ்ஸுத: ।
ந ஹி ராமாத்பரோ லோகே வித்யதே ஸத்பதே ஸ்தித: ॥
nārhā tvaṃ ṡōcituṃ dēvi! yasyāstē rāghavassutaḥ ।
na hi rāmātparō lōkē vidyatē satpathē sthitaḥ ॥
You must not grieve, my lady, you who have Rāghava for a son.
No one is above Rāma in treading the path of virtue.
2.44.27 அபிவாதயமாநம் தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸஸுஹ்ருதம் ஸுதம் ।
முதாऽஸ்ர்ரு மோக்ஷ்யஸே க்ஷிப்ரம் மேகலேகேவ வார்ஷிகீ ॥
abhivādayamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā sasuhṛdaṃ sutam ।
mudā'ṡrṛ mōkṣyasē kṣipraṃ mēghalēkhēva vārṣikī ॥
Seeing your son prostrate himself
in front of you along with his friends,
you will be soon be shedding tears of joy,
like a row of clouds in the monsoon season.
2.44.28 புத்ரஸ்தே வரத: க்ஷிப்ரமயோத்யாம் புநராகத: ।
பாணிப்யாம் ம்ருதுபீநாப்யாம் சரணௌ பீடயிஷ்யதி ॥
putrastē varadaḥ kṣipramayōdhyāṃ punarāgataḥ ।
pāṇibhyāṃ mṛdupīnābhyāṃ caraṇau pīḍayiṣyati ॥
Back in Ayōdhyā soon, your son, lord of bounty,
will again press your feet with his hands
that are so soft and plump.
2.44.29 அபிவாத்ய நமஸ்யந்தம் ஸூரம் ஸஸுஹ்ருதம் ஸுதம் ।
முதாऽஸ்ரை: ப்ரோக்ஷ்யஸி புநர்மேகராஜிரிவாசலம் ॥
abhivādya namasyantaṃ ṡūraṃ sasuhṛdaṃ sutam ।
mudā'sraiḥ prōkṣyasi punarmēgharājirivācalam ॥
You will be drenching your valiant son in tears of joy,
as the rain-cloud does the hills,
when he prostrates at your feet along with his friends.
2.44.30 ஆஸ்வாஸயந்தீ விவிதைஸ்ச வாக்யை-
ர்வாக்யோபசாரே குஸலாऽநவத்யா ।
ராமஸ்ய தாம் மாதரமேவமுக்த்வா
தேவீ ஸுமித்ரா விரராம ராமா ॥
āṡvāsayantī vividhaiṡca vākyai-
rvākyōpacārē kuṡalā'navadyā ।
rāmasya tāṃ mātaramēvamuktvā
dēvī sumitrā virarāma rāmā ॥
The charming and flawless lady Sumitrā,
who was skilled in words of consolation,
concluded with those words to Rāma’s mother.
2.44.31 நிஸம்ய தல்லக்ஷ்மணமாத்ருவாக்யம்
ராமஸ்ய மாதுர்நரதேவபத்ந்யா: ।
ஸத்யஸ்ஸரீரே விநநாஸ ஸோக:
ஸரத்கதோ மேக இவால்பதோய: ॥
niṡamya tallakṣmaṇamātṛvākyaṃ
rāmasya māturnaradēvapatnyāḥ ।
sadyaṡṡarīrē vinanāṡa ṡōkaḥ
ṡaradgatō mēgha ivālpatōyaḥ ॥
On hearing those words of Lakshmaṇa’s mother,
the grief that beset the wife of the lord of men, Rāma’s mother,
exited from her being,
like a wooly cloud when the post-monsoon season arrives.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே சதுஸ்சத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē catuṡcatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the forty-fourth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
