Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 40
Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 40
In this Sarga, after paying obeisance to Daṡaratha, Kousalyā and Sumitrā, Seetā, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa get on the chariot and leave for the Vana. Daṡaratha arranges for enough fine clothes and ornaments for Seetā, to last for the duration of her stay in Vana. He places many armaments, shields, gloves and vests for the brothers, in the chariot.
As Rāma departs, the entire city cries. Rāma, unable to see them all crying, and unwilling to prolong their misery, urges the charioteer Sumantra to drive the chariot fast. The king’s people turn back after following Rāma for a distance.

Then Rāma, Seetā and Lakshmaṇa
paid respects to the King by touching his feet.
With heavy hearts, they
circumambulated him with palms joined in reverence.

taṃ cāpi samanujñāpya dharmajñassītayā saha ।
rāghavaṡṡōkasammūḍhō jananīmabhyavādayat ॥
Rāma, the knower of Dharma,
after duly obtaining his father’s permission (to leave),
with his mind stupefied by grief,
paid obeisance to his mother, accompanied by Seetā.

Following his brother, Lakshmaṇa also paid obeisance to Kousalyā,
and then he clasped the feet of his mother Sumitrā.

taṃ vandamānaṃ rudatī mātā saumitrimabravīt ।
hitakāmā mahābāhuṃ mūrdhnyupāghrāya lakṣmaṇam ॥
Mother Sumitrā, wishing her mighty armed son Lakshmaṇa all well,
smelled his head as he prostrated, and said, crying:
2.40.5 ஸ்ருஷ்டஸ்த்வம் வநவாஸாய ஸ்வநுரக்தஸ்ஸுஹ்ருஜ்ஜநே ।

sṛṣṭastvaṃ vanavāsāya svanuraktassuhṛjjanē ।
rāmē pramādaṃ mā kārṣīḥ putra! bhrātari gacchati ॥
My dear son! You are extremely committed
to the well being of the people you love.
You seem to have born destined to live in Vana.
Never be inattentive towards your brother Rāma
who is on his way to Vana. The first sentence here defines the essence of Lakshmaṇa’s character quite succinctly. Those specific words coming from his own mother, makes them that much more authentic.
People of such character are becoming rarer these days. Even the few who are still there, are not respected or valued by the current society and the value system.
The system tells everyone to take care of themselves first and then the others, optionally.

O sinless one! He is your ultimate recourse
regardless of whether he is
facing hardships or enjoying riches.
That is the Dharma for all good people in this world,
to be obedient to the brother, who is older.

Performing charity, conducting Yajñas,
being bound by one’s custom,
and giving up one’s life in a good fight
are considered to be appropriate
and characteristic of your lineage.

After saying thus, Sumitrā repeated to
Lakshmaṇa, who was ready to leave with
his beloved brother Rāghava: ‘May you go now!’

Look upon Rāma as Daṡaratha himself,
on the daughter of Janaka as me,
and on the forest as Ayōdhyā.
Go, my child, and may you be happy!

tataḥ sumantraḥ kākutsthaṃ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ।
vinītō vinayajñaṡca mātalirvāsavaṃ yathā ॥
Then Sumantra, who was well versed with the demands of courtesy,
said to the prince of Kākutstha lineage
with palms joined in all deference,
as Mātali might say to Vāsava:
Vāsava is another name for Indra.
Mātali is Indra’s charioteer.

O Prince of great renown!
Please mount the chariot!
May all bode well for you!
I shall drop you swiftly,
O Rāma, wherever you tell me to!

You now have to begin the fourteen years that
the queen has demanded of you, to live in the Vana!

taṃ rathaṃ sūryasaṅkāṡaṃ sītā hṛṣṭēna cētasā ।
ārurōha varārōhā kṛtvālaṅkāramātmanaḥ ॥
Seetā of exquisite hips decorated herself
and with cheerful mind mounted the chariot,
which was gleaming like the sun.

athō jvalanasaṅkāṡaṃ cāmīkaravibhūṣitam! ।
tamāruruhatustūrṇaṃ bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
Then both the brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa quickly
mounted the chariot which was decorated fully with gold,
and was shining like a blazing fire.

The father-in-law then gave Seetā,
who was leaving with her husband
fine clothes and ornaments,
enough for the number of years
that she would live in the Vana.

He then placed, in the middle of the chariot,
many armaments, shields, sturdy hand gloves
and protective vests for the brothers.

sītātṛtīyānārūḍhān dṛṣṭvā dṛṣṭamacōdayat ।

Seeing that they, three in all with Seetā, had got in,
Sumantra spurred those splendid horses
whose speed rivals that of the wind.

When Rāghava started thus on his long sojourn
to live in the Vana, the entire city was stupefied
and all the people lost their vitality and strength. Vālmeeki is very visual as we noted a few times earlier.
Herein he gives a graphic description of the scene of Rāma’s departure from the city, capturing the mood of the entire city.

tatsamākulasambhrāntaṃ mattasaṅkupitadvipam ।
hayaṡiñjitanirghōṣaṃ puramāsīnmahāsvanam ॥
There arose a great uproar
from the din of people in a state of violent agitation,
from the raging elephants in rut and
and from the jingling of horses’ trappings.

tata ssabālavṛddhā sā purī paramapīḍitā ।
rāmamēvābhidudrāva gharmārtā salilaṃ yathā ॥
The entire city including the children and the aged,
tormented by grief, ran after Rāma,
as those afflicted by the oppressive
heat of summer would run for water.

Hanging on to the sides and the rear of the chariot,
with their eyes full of tears and their gaze fixed on him,
all of them wailed aloud saying:
2.40.22 ஸம்யச்ச வாஜிநாம் ரஸ்மீந் ஸூத! யாஹி ஸநைஸ்ஸநை: ।

O charioteer! Hold the reins of the horses and go slow
so that we may get a good glance of the face of Rāma,
for soon we will not be able to see him.

āyasaṃ hṛdayaṃ nūnaṃ rāmamāturasaṃṡayam ।

Rāma’s mother must have a heart of iron, for sure!
Or else, how did it not break into pieces,
seeing a son, who is like a youthful god, go to Vana!

The princess of Vidēha, fully devoted to Dharma,
is following her husband like a shadow
and not leaving him, like the sunlight
that never leaves the Mēru mountain.
She is, indeed, fortunate!

Ah Lakshmaṇa! You are indeed fortunate
that you will be able to serve
your brother who is like a god
and speaks pleasantly at all times!

It must indeed be greatly fulfilling for you
that you are able to follow (him) like this.
This must be considered as the
greatest of fortunes and a doorway to heaven.

Saying thus, the people who were following
their beloved Rāma, the delight of Ikshwāku dynasty,
could not hold back the tears flowing from their eyes.

Then the king, feeling miserable
and surrounded by women who were equally miserable,
came out of his house saying,
“let me take a look at my beloved son!”

ṡuṡruvē cāgrataḥ strīṇāṃ rudantīnāṃ mahāsvanaḥ ।

He heard the loud wailings of women ahead of him,
which resembled the trumpeting of female elephants
when their great male is taken captive.

pitā hi rājā kākutsthaḥ ṡrīmān sannastadā'bhavat ।

And that father, the blessed king of Kākutstha dynasty,
was sunk in gloom like the full moon at the time of eclipse.

That blessed soul of unimaginable aplomb
then urged the charioteer to drive faster.

With Rāma urging him to move forward,
and the people crying out to him to hold back,
the charioteer found himself unable
to do both things at the same time.

As the mighty armed Rāma kept moving on,
the dust that rose from the earth was
subsided with the tears of the citizens.

The entire city, at that time of Rāma’s departure,
was stupefied and extremely distressed.
It was drenched by tears completely.
And its heart cried out uncontrollably.

Tears rolled down from the eyes of women,

that were shaken by the fish.

Seeing the entire city grieving in unison,
the blessed king fell on the floor overcome by grief,
like a tree severed at its root.

making everyone in the inner quarters also cry.

Unable to behold those who were used only to
riding on a chariot come on foot,
and unable to see those who were used only to
happiness and joy become completely distressed,
he urged the charioteer to drive away fast.

the mother of Rāma ran towards him.

Then he repeatedly glanced at his mother,
who was crying and running after the chariot,
wailing “Hey Rāma, Rāma! Hey Seetā and Lakshmaṇa!”,
shedding tears for Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and Seetā
with her gait out of step, as if she was dancing.

Sumantra felt as if he was
caught between two wheels.

Rāma, the knower of Dharma,
after duly obtaining his father’s permission (to leave),
with his mind stupefied by grief,
paid obeisance to his mother, accompanied by Seetā.

Mother Sumitrā, wishing her mighty armed son Lakshmaṇa all well,
smelled his head as he prostrated, and said, crying:

Then Sumantra, who was well versed with the demands of courtesy,
said to the prince of Kākutstha lineage
with palms joined in all deference,
as Mātali might say to Vāsava:
Vāsava is another name for Indra.
Mātali is Indra’s charioteer.

and was shining like a blazing fire.

The father-in-law then gave Seetā,
who was leaving with her husband
fine clothes and ornaments,
enough for the number of years
that she would live in the Vana.

Herein he gives a graphic description of the scene of Rāma’s departure from the city, capturing the mood of the entire city.

from the raging elephants in rut and
and from the jingling of horses’ trappings.

as those afflicted by the oppressive
heat of summer would run for water.
