Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 29
In the previous Sarga, Rāma told Seetā about the many perils of life in the Vana and denied her request to take her with him.
In this Sarga, Seetā insists in many ways that he must take her with him. But Rāma does not yield and thinks that Vana is not an appropriate place for her.
2.29.1
ஏதத்து வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸீதா ராமஸ்ய து:கிதா ।
ப்ரஸக்தாஸ்ருமுகீ மந்தமிதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
ētattu vacanaṃ ṡrutvā sītā rāmasya duḥkhitā ।
prasaktāṡrumukhī mandamidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Hearing those words of Rāma,
Seetā became very sad and
spoke these words slowly,
with tears flowing down her face:
2.29.2
யே த்வயா கீர்திதா தோஷா வநே வஸ்தவ்யதாம் ப்ரதி ।
குணாநித்யேவ தாந்வித்தி தவ ஸ்நேஹபுரஸ்க்ருதாந் ॥
yē tvayā kīrtitā dōṣā vanē vastavyatāṃ prati ।
guṇānityēva tānviddhi tava snēhapuraskṛtān ॥
Whatever problems you mentioned of the life in Vana,
can be considered to be blessings
when I have your company and affection.
2.29.4
ம்ருகா ஸ்ஸிம்ஹா கஜாஸ்சைவ ஸார்தூலா ஸ்ஸரபாஸ்ததா ।
பக்ஷிணஸ்ஸ்ருமராஸ்சைவ யே சாந்யே வநசாரிண: ॥
அத்ருஷ்டபூர்வரூபத்வாத்ஸர்வே தே தவ ராகவ! ।
ரூபம் த்ருஷ்ட்வாऽபஸர்பேயுர்பயே ஸர்வே ஹி பிப்யதி ॥
mṛgā ssiṃhā gajāṡcaiva ṡārdūlā ṡṡarabhāstathā ।
pakṣiṇassṛmarāṡcaiva yē cānyē vanacāriṇaḥ ॥
adṛṣṭapūrvarūpatvātsarvē tē tava rāghava! ।
rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā'pasarpēyurbhayē sarvē hi bibhyati ॥
Deer, lions, elephants, tigers, Ṡarabhas,
birds, Sṛmaras and all other beasts of Vana,
O Rāghava, will be scared and flee on seeing you,
the likes of whom they have never seen before.
What confidence she has in him!
2.29.5
த்வயா ச ஸஹ கந்தவ்யம் மயா குருஜநாஜ்ஞயா ।
த்வத்வியோகேந மே ராம! த்யக்தவ்யமிஹ ஜீவிதம் ॥
tvayā ca saha gantavyaṃ mayā gurujanājñayā ।
tvadviyōgēna mē rāma! tyaktavyamiha jīvitam ॥
The directive from my elders is to go with you always.
If I cannot be with you, O Rāma,
I would rather give up this life!
2.29.6
ந ச மாம் த்வத்ஸமீபஸ்தாமபி ஸக்நோதிராகவ ।
ஸுராணாமீஸ்வரஸ்ஸக்ர: ப்ரதர்ஷயிதுமோஜஸா ॥
na ca māṃ tvatsamīpasthāmapi ṡaknōtirāghava ।
surāṇāmīṡvaraṡṡakraḥ pradharṣayitumōjasā ॥
When I am by you, O Rāghava,
not even Sakra, the lord of Dēvas,
with all his might, can bother me!
2.29.7
பதிஹீநா து யா நாரீ ந ஸா ஸக்ஷ்யதி ஜீவிதும் ।
காமமேவம் விதம் ராம! த்வயா மம நிதர்ஸிதம் ॥
patihīnā tu yā nārī na sā ṡakṣyati jīvitum ।
kāmamēvaṃ vidhaṃ rāma! tvayā mama nidarṡitam ॥
You have yourself strongly imprinted it on me
that it is difficult for a woman
to live without her husband!
2.29.8
அத சாபி மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ! ப்ராஹ்மணாநாம் மயா ஸ்ருதம் ।
புரா பித்ருக்ருஹே ஸத்யம் வஸ்தவ்யம் கில மே வநே ॥
atha cāpi mahāprājña! brāhmaṇānāṃ mayā ṡrutam ।
purā pitṛgṛhē satyaṃ vastavyaṃ kila mē vanē ॥
Besides, O learned one,
a long time ago when I was living in my father’s house,
I heard from Brāhmaṇas
that I am destined to live in Vana!
2.29.9
லக்ஷணிப்யோ த்விஜாதிப்யஸ்ஸ்ருத்வாऽஹம் வசநம் புரா ।
வநவாஸக்ருதோத்ஸாஹா நித்யமேவ மஹாபல! ॥
lakṣaṇibhyō dvijātibhyaṡṡṛtvā'haṃ vacanaṃ purā ।
vanavāsakṛtōtsāhā nityamēva mahābala! ॥
I have ever been looking forward eagerly
to living in Vana, O mighty one,
having heard those words
in the past from the Brāhmaṇas,
who have the ability to foretell events based on
attributes of one’s physique.
2.29.10
ஆதேஸோ வநவாஸஸ்ய ப்ராப்தவ்ய ஸ்ஸ மயா கில ।
ஸா த்வயா ஸஹ தத்ராஹம் யாஸ்யாமி ப்ரிய! நாந்யதா ॥
ādēṡō vanavāsasya prāptavya ssa mayā kila ।
sā tvayā saha tatrāhaṃ yāsyāmi priya! nānyathā ॥
It must have been decreed on me to live in Vana.
It can happen no other way, my dear,
than my going there along with you!
2.29.11
க்ருதாதேஸா பவிஷ்யாமி கமிஷ்யாமி ஸஹ த்வயா ।
காலஸ்சாயம் ஸமுத்பந்நஸ்ஸத்யவாக்பவது த்விஜ: ॥
kṛtādēṡā bhaviṣyāmi gamiṣyāmi saha tvayā ।
kālaṡcāyaṃ samutpannassatyavāgbhavatu dvijaḥ ॥
Let me fulfill that decree. Let me go with you.
I think that time has come.
Let those words of the Brāhmaṇa come true!
2.29.12
வநவாஸேऽபிஜாநாமி து:காநி பஹுதா கில ।
ப்ராப்யந்தே நியதம் வீர! புருஷைரக்ருதாத்மபி: ॥
vanavāsē'bhijānāmi duḥkhāni bahuthā kila ।
prāpyantē niyataṃ vīra! puruṣairakṛtātmabhiḥ ॥
I know there will be many challenges living in the Vana!
But, O Veera, they truly are of concern
only for those who lack determination.
2.29.13
கந்யயா ச பிதுர்கேஹே வநவாஸஸ்ஸ்ருதோ மயா ।
பிக்ஷிண்யாஸ்ஸாதுவ்ருத்தாயா மம மாதுரிஹாக்ரத: ॥
kanyayā ca piturgēhē vanavāsaṡṡṛtō mayā ।
bhikṣiṇyāssādhuvṛttāyā mama māturihāgrataḥ ॥
I also heard about my having to live in Vana
from a good natured mendicant woman,
in my father’s house in my mother’s presence,
when I was young.
2.29.14
ப்ரஸாதிதஸ்ச வை பூர்வம் த்வம் மே பஹுதிதம் ப்ரபோ! ।
கமநம் வநவாஸஸ்ய காங்க்ஷிதம் ஹி ஸஹ த்வயா ॥
prasāditaṡca vai pūrvaṃ tvaṃ mē bahutithaṃ prabhō! ।
gamanaṃ vanavāsasya kāṅkṣitaṃ hi saha tvayā ॥
My lord, I have earned your grace
over a long period of time!
I very much want to go with you to live in the Vana!
2.29.15
க்ருதக்ஷணாऽஹம் பத்ரம் தே கமநம் ப்ரதி ராகவ ।
வநவாஸஸ்ய ஸூரஸ்ய சர்யா ஹி மம ரோசதே ॥
kṛtakṣaṇā'haṃ bhadraṃ tē gamanaṃ prati rāghava ।
vanavāsasya ṡūrasya caryā hi mama rōcatē ॥
I have long been set for this moment of
going to live in the Vana!
O Rāghava, I sure love to take the challenge!
May all bode well for you!
2.29.16
ஸுத்தாத்மந்ப்ரேமபாவாத்தி பவிஷ்யாமி விகல்மஷா ।
பர்தாரமநுகச்சந்தீ பர்தா ஹி மம தைவதம் ॥
ṡuddhātmanprēmabhāvādhdi bhaviṣyāmi vikalmaṣā ।
bhartāramanugacchantī bhartā hi mama daivatam ॥
O pure soul! It is only purely out of love,
and for no other foible of mine,
that I like to follow my husband!
For, husband alone is my lord!
2.29.17
ப்ரேத்யபாவே ஹி கல்யாணஸ்ஸங்கமோ மே ஸஹ த்வயா ।
ஸ்ருதிர்ஹி ஸ்ரூயதே புண்யா ப்ராஹ்மணாநாம் யஸஸ்விநாம் ॥
prētyabhāvē hi kalyāṇassaṅgamō mē saha tvayā ।
ṡrutirhi ṡrūyatē puṇyā brāhmaṇānāṃ yaṡasvinām ॥
We hear the word of Veda from well-regarded Brāhmaṇas,
that I will be in auspicious union with you even after death.
2.29.18
இஹலோகே ச பித்ருபிர்யா ஸ்த்ரீ யஸ்ய மஹாமதே! ।
அத்பிர்தத்தா ஸ்வதர்மேண ப்ரேத்யபாவேऽபி தஸ்ய ஸா ॥
ihalōkē ca pitṛbhiryā strī yasya mahāmatē! ।
adbhirdattā svadharmēṇa prētyabhāvē'pi tasya sā ॥
Whomever a woman is given to, along with ceremonial waters,
by the parents according to their Dharma,
to him alone she belongs even after death.
2.29.19
ஏவமஸ்மாத்ஸ்வகாம் நாரீம் ஸுவ்ருத்தாம் ஹி பதிவ்ரதாம் ।
நாபிரோசயஸே நேதும் த்வம் மாம் கேநேஹ ஹேதுநா ॥
ēvamasmātsvakāṃ nārīṃ suvṛttāṃ hi pativratām ।
nābhirōcayasē nētuṃ tvaṃ māṃ kēnēha hētunā ॥
For what reason are you reluctant to take me,
a woman who is your own, of good character
and is fully devoted to husband, from here!
2.29.20
பக்தாம் பதிவ்ரதாம் தீநாம் மாம் ஸமாம் ஸுகது:கயோ: ।
நேதுமர்ஹஸி காகுத்ஸ்த! ஸமாந ஸுகது:கிநீம் ॥
bhaktāṃ pativratāṃ dīnāṃ māṃ samāṃ sukhaduḥkhayōḥ ।
nētumarhasi kākutstha! samāna sukhaduḥkhinīm ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage! You must take me with you,
your loving and faithful wife, so miserable now,
so constant in my devotion to you in joy and sorrow,
making your joys and sorrows my own!
2.29.21
யதி மாம் து:கிதாமேவம் வநம் நேதும் ந சேச்சஸி ।
விஷமக்நிம் ஜலம் வாऽஹமாஸ்தாஸ்யே ம்ருத்யுகாரணாத் ॥
yadi māṃ duḥkhitāmēvaṃ vanaṃ nētuṃ na cēcchasi ।
viṣamagniṃ jalaṃ vā'hamāsthāsyē mṛtyukāraṇāt ॥
If you are not willing to take me to Vana
leaving me in such misery,
I have to take recourse to poison or fire or water
to bring death upon myself.
2.29.22
ஏவம் பஹுவிதம் தம் ஸா யாசதே கமநம் ப்ரதி ।
நாநுமேநே மஹாபாஹுஸ்தாம் நேதும் விஜநம் வநம் ॥
ēvaṃ bahuvidhaṃ taṃ sā yācatē gamanaṃ prati ।
nānumēnē mahābāhustāṃ nētuṃ vijanaṃ vanam ॥
Even though she pleaded in many ways like this,
that mighty armed one was not willing
to take her to the desolate Vana.
2.29.23
ஏவமுக்தா து ஸா சிந்தாம் மைதிலீ ஸமுபாகதா ।
ஸ்நாபயந்தீவ காமுஷ்ணைரஸ்ருபிர்நயநச்யுதை: ॥
ēvamuktā tu sā cintāṃ maithilī samupāgatā ।
snāpayantīva gāmuṣṇairaṡrubhirnayanacyutaiḥ ॥
After she was told so,
such great grief took over the princess of Mithilā
that the tears rolling from her eyes
seemed to drench the entire earth.
2.29.24
சிந்தயந்தீம் ததா தாம் து நிவர்தயிதுமாத்மவாந் ।
தாம்ரோஷ்டீம் ஸ ததா ஸீதாம் காகுத்ஸ்தோ பஹ்வஸாந்த்வயத் ॥
cintayantīṃ tathā tāṃ tu nivartayitumātmavān ।
tāmrōṣṭhīṃ sa tadā sītāṃ kākutsthō bahvasāntvayat ॥
That considerate prince of Kākutstha lineage,
then tried to console and dissuade that
grief stricken, copper lipped Seetā, in many ways.
Copper here indicates the shiny tinge of red.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே ஏகோநத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē ēkōnatriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the twenty ninth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
