    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 23
    In this Sarga Lakshmaṇa, totally upset with the turn of events, expresses his sadness and outrage over the decision of his father and Kaikēyee and the acceptance of it by Rāma.


    He does not appreciate Rāma attributing the turn of events to the will of destiny. He feels that a strong willed man can override destiny. He wants Rāma’s coronation to proceed as planned and says that he will kill everyone and anyone that might come in the way.


    But at the end, Rāma makes it clear that the right course is to uphold the promise made by their father, and that he is firmly established in that opinion.


    Bāla Kāṇḍa is full of stories of the past. It hardly establishes the main characters of Rāmāyaṇa, except that of Daṡaratha in the episode of Viṡwāmitra’s request and Rāma’s character in the episode of the slaying of Tāṭaka and encounter with Rāma, the son of Jamadagni.


    Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa, on the other hand, establishes each character, through its response to the unexpected turn of events. In the previous Sargas it established the characters of Kaikēyee, Daṡaratha, Kousalyā and Rāma, along with mood and preferences of the peoples of the kingdom. In this Sarga, it establishes the character of Lakshmaṇa for the first time.


    Through him, Vālmeeki also illustrates a universal pattern of human behavior. Whenever there is a setback or insult to a leader, the support base and family members find it harder to digest, and react strongly, than the leader himself. The strength of the leader lies in his ability to stand firm and carry all of them along with him.
    2.23.1 இதி ப்ருவதி ராமே து லக்ஷ்மணோऽதஸ்ஸிரா முஹு: ।
    ஸ்ருத்வா மத்யம் ஜகாமேவ மநஸா து:கஹர்ஷயோ: ॥
    iti bruvati rāmē tu lakṣmaṇō'dhaṡṡirā muhuḥ ।
    ṡṛtvā madhyaṃ jagāmēva manasā duḥkhaharṣayōḥ ॥
    As Rāma spoke thus, Lakshmaṇa kept his head lowered.
    His mind oscillated between sadness and happiness. Sadness, for the obvious reason. Happiness, perhaps, is at the clarity and resolve of his brother.
    2.23.2 ததா து பத்த்வா ப்ருகுடீம் ப்ருவோர்மத்யே நரர்ஷப: ।
    நிஸஸ்வாஸ மஹாஸர்போ பிலஸ்த இவ ரோஷித: ॥
    tadā tu badhdvā bhrukuṭīṃ bhruvōrmadhyē nararṣabhaḥ ।
    niṡaṡvāsa mahāsarpō bilastha iva rōṣitaḥ ॥
    Contracting his eye brows and frowning,
    that bull among men hissed like an angry viper in a hole. Like we noted earlier, Lakshmaṇa is symbolic of the support base.


    It always takes more time for the support base (and family members) to accept the setbacks than for the leader.


    It is when the support base does not have full trust in the leader, that they dump the leader and choose a new leader in place.
    2.23.3 தஸ்ய துஷ்ப்ரதிவீக்ஷம் தத்ப்ருகுடீஸஹிதம் ததா ।
    பபௌ க்ருத்தஸ்ய ஸிம்ஹஸ்ய முகஸ்ய ஸத்ருஸம் முகம் ॥
    tasya duṣprativīkṣaṃ tadbhrukuṭīsahitaṃ tadā ।
    babhau kruddhasya siṃhasya mukhasya sadṛṡaṃ mukham ॥
    His face, with contracted eyebrows, was frightening to look at
    like the face of a provoked lion.
    2.23.4 அக்ரஹஸ்தம் விதுந்வம்ஸ்து ஹஸ்தீ ஹஸ்தமிவாத்மந: ।
    திர்யகூர்த்வம் ஸரீரே ச பாதயித்வா ஸிரோதராம் ॥
    அக்ராக்ஷ்ணா வீக்ஷமாணஸ்து திர்யக்ப்ராதரமப்ரவீத் ।
    agrahastaṃ vidhunvaṃstu hastī hastamivātmanaḥ ।
    tiryagūrdhvaṃ ṡarīrē ca pātayitvā ṡirōdharām ॥
    agrākṣṇā vīkṣamāṇastu tiryagbhrātaramabravīt ।
    Waving his palm like the trunk of an elephant,
    shaking his head sideways and up and down,
    seeing his brother obliquely through the corner of his eye,
    he said:
    2.23.5-6 அஸ்தாநே ஸம்ப்ரமோ யஸ்ய ஜாதோ வை ஸுமஹாநயம் ॥
    தர்மதோஷ ப்ரஸங்கேந லோகஸ்யாநதிஸங்கயா ।
    கதம்ஹ்யேததஸம்ப்ராந்தஸ்த்வத்விதோ வக்துமர்ஹதி ॥
    யதா தைவமஸௌடீரம் ஸௌண்டீர! க்ஷத்ரியர்ஷப! ।
    asthānē sambhramō yasya jātō vai sumahānayam ॥
    dharmadōṣa prasaṅgēna lōkasyānatiṡaṅkayā ।
    kathaṃhyētadasambhrāntastvadvidhō vaktumarhati ॥
    yathā daivamaṡauḍīraṃ ṡauṇḍīra! kṣatriyarṣabha! ।
    What is this? Where did this completely misplaced
    bewilderment of yours come from?
    Is it from your excessive concern about subverting Dharma?
    Or are you completely oblivious to public opinion?
    How can you, the best among the courageous Kshatriyas,
    in the right state of mind, speak
    so highly of the frivolous will of god?
    2.23.7 கிந்நாம க்ருபணம் தைவமஸக்தமபிஸம்ஸஸி ॥
    பாபயோஸ்தே கதம் நாம தயோஸ்ஸங்கா ந வித்யதே ।
    kinnāma kṛpaṇaṃ daivamaṡaktamabhiṡaṃsasi ॥
    pāpayōstē kathaṃ nāma tayōṡṡaṅkā na vidyatē ।
    Why do you exalt the weak and pathetic destiny?
    Why are you blind to the evil plan of those two?
    The two being Daṡaratha and Kaikēyee.
    2.23.8 ஸந்தி தர்மோபதா ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணா: தர்மாத்மந்கிம் ந புத்யஸே ।
    தயோஸ்ஸுசரிதம் ஸ்வார்தம் ஸாட்யாத்பரிஜிஹீர்ஷதோ: ॥
    santi dharmōpadhā ṡlakṣṇāḥ dharmātmankiṃ na budhyasē ।
    tayōssucaritaṃ svārthaṃ ṡāṭhyātparijihīrṣatōḥ ॥
    They are taking advantage of your good character
    by appealing softly to your sense of Dharma!
    O Dharmātma! Why are you not able to see that
    their conspiracy is completely driven by selfishness?
    2.23.9 யதி நைவம் வ்யவஸிதம் ஸ்யாத்தி ப்ராகேவ ராகவ ! ॥
    தயோ: ப்ராகேவ தத்தஸ்ச ஸ்யாத்வர: ப்ரக்ருதஸ்ச ஸ: ।
    yadi naivaṃ vyavasitaṃ syāddhi prāgēva rāghava ! ॥
    tayōḥ prāgēva dattaṡca syādvaraḥ prakṛtaṡca saḥ ।
    O Rāghava! They must have intentionally
    planned this for a while!
    Otherwise, the boons would have been
    redeemed a long while ago.
    2.23.10 லோகவித்விஷ்டமாரப்தம் த்வதந்யஸ்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
    நோத்ஸஹே ஸஹிதும் வீர! தத்ர மே க்ஷந்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
    lōkavidviṣṭamārabdhaṃ tvadanyasyābhiṣēcanam ।
    nōtsahē sahituṃ vīra! tatra mē kṣantumarhasi ॥
    Any effort to consecrate anyone other than you
    is not acceptable to any one.
    I cannot accept this by any means.
    Please forgive me for that!
    2.23.11 யேநேய மாகதா த்வைதம் தவ புத்திர்மஹாமதே! ।
    ஸ ஹி தர்மோ மம த்வேஷ்ய: ப்ரஸங்காத்யஸ்ய முஹ்யஸி ॥
    yēnēya māgatā dvaidhaṃ tava buddhirmahāmatē! ।
    sa hi dharmō mama dvēṣyaḥ prasaṅgādyasya muhyasi ॥
    I hate that Dharma, whose very mention allures you,
    because of which, O great intellectual,
    you have given in to this thinking!
    2.23.12 கதம் த்வம் கர்மணா ஸக்த: கைகேயீவஸவர்திந: ।
    கரிஷ்யஸி பிதுர்வாக்யமதர்மிஷ்டம் விகர்ஹிதம் ॥
    kathaṃ tvaṃ karmaṇā ṡaktaḥ kaikēyīvaṡavartinaḥ ।
    kariṣyasi piturvākyamadharmiṣṭhaṃ vigarhitam ॥
    How can a capable person like you, bring himself to
    oblige the unjust and reprehensible words of his father
    who is in the clutches of Kaikēyee!
    2.23.13 யத்யயம் கில்பிஷாத்பேத: க்ருதோऽப்யேவம் ந க்ருஹ்யதே ।
    ஜாயதே தத்ர மே து:கம் தர்மஸங்கஸ்ச கர்ஹித: ॥
    yadyayaṃ kilbiṣādbhēdaḥ kṛtō'pyēvaṃ na gṛhyatē ।
    jāyatē tatra mē duḥkhaṃ dharmasaṅgaṡca garhitaḥ ॥
    This conspiracy that is born out of evil intentions,
    must be taken to be such. If not, it makes me feel sad.
    Following a Dharma (that supports evil intentions)
    is reprehensible.
    2.23.14 மநஸாऽபி கதம் காமம் குர்யாஸ்த்வம் காமவ்ருத்தயோ: ।
    தயோஸ்த்வஹிதயோர்நித்யம் ஸத்ர்வோ: பித்ரபிதாநயோ: ॥
    manasā'pi kathaṃ kāmaṃ kuryāstvaṃ kāmavṛttayōḥ ।
    tayōstvahitayōrnityaṃ ṡatrvōḥ pitrabhidhānayōḥ ॥
    How could you contemplate, even for a moment,
    fulfilling the wish of these two?
    They are your enemies, and parents only in name.
    They are intent on having their way!
    They never had your welfare in mind!
    2.23.15 யத்யபி ப்ரதிபத்திஸ்தே தைவீ சாபி தயோர்மதம் ।
    ததாப்யுபேக்ஷணீயம் தே ந மே ததபி ரோசதே ॥
    yadyapi pratipattistē daivī cāpi tayōrmatam ।
    tathāpyupēkṣaṇīyaṃ tē na mē tadapi rōcatē ॥
    Even if you feel that their thoughts are driven by Providence,
    I do not like your not doing anything about it!
    2.23.16 விக்லபோ வீர்யஹீநோ யஸ்ஸ தைவமநுவர்ததே ।
    வீராஸ்ஸம்பாவிதாத்மாநோ ந தைவம் பர்யுபாஸதே ॥
    viklabō vīryahīnō yassa daivamanuvartatē ।
    vīrāssambhāvitātmānō na daivaṃ paryupāsatē ॥
    Only the confused and weak cave in to destiny.
    A Veera with self respect would not leave things to destiny!
    2.23.17 தைவம் புருஷகாரேண ய: ஸமர்த: ப்ரபாதிதும் ।
    ந தைவேந விபந்நார்த: புருஷஸ்ஸோऽவஸீததி ॥
    daivaṃ puruṣakārēṇa yaḥ samarthaḥ prabādhitum ।
    na daivēna vipannārthaḥ puruṣassō'vasīdati ॥
    Any man who can override destiny with his own abilities,
    would not have to suffer the adversities caused by destiny.
    2.23.18 த்ரக்ஷ்யந்தி த்வத்ய தைவஸ்ய பௌருஷம் புருஷஸ்ய ச ।
    தைவமாநுஷயோரத்ய வ்யக்தா வ்யக்திர்பவிஷ்யதி ॥
    drakṣyanti tvadya daivasya pauruṣaṃ puruṣasya ca ।
    daivamānuṣayōradya vyaktā vyaktirbhaviṣyati ॥
    May everyone witness today
    the power of destiny versus the power of man!
    The difference between man and god will become clear!
    2.23.19 அத்ய மத்பௌருஷஹதம் தைவம் த்ரக்ஷ்யந்தி வை ஜநா: ।
    யத்தைவாதாஹதம் தேऽத்ய த்ருஷ்டம் ராஜ்யாபிஷேசநம் ॥
    adya matpauruṣahataṃ daivaṃ drakṣyanti vai janāḥ ।
    yaddaivādāhataṃ tē'dya dṛṣṭaṃ rājyābhiṣēcanam ॥
    Let people see today
    the Destiny, which has foiled your crowning,
    itself being foiled by my prowess.
    2.23.20 அத்யங்குஸமிவோத்தாமம் கஜம் மதபலோத்ததம் ।
    ப்ரதாவிதமஹம் தைவம் பௌருஷேண நிவர்தயே ॥
    atyaṅkuṡamivōddāmaṃ gajaṃ madabalōddhatam ।
    pradhāvitamahaṃ daivaṃ pauruṣēṇa nivartayē ॥
    Destiny may be running wild,
    like a mighty elephant in rut
    that broke away its shackles
    and does not care about the goad!
    But I will bring it back under control, with my strength!
    2.23.21 லோகபாலாஸ்ஸமஸ்தா ஸ்தே நாத்ய ராமாபிஷேசநம் ।
    ந ச க்ருத்ஸ்நாஸ்த்ரயோ லோகா விஹந்யு: கிம் புந: பிதா ॥
    lōkapālāssamastā stē nādya rāmābhiṣēcanam ।
    na ca kṛtsnāstrayō lōkā vihanyuḥ kiṃ punaḥ pitā ॥
    Not even the lords of all the worlds together,
    can stop the consecration of Rāma today!
    Neither would all the three worlds in their entirety!
    What to speak of then, about our father!
    2.23.22 யைர்நிவாஸஸ்தவாரண்யே மிதோ ராஜந்ஸமர்தித: ।
    அரண்யே தே நிவத்ஸ்யந்தி சதுர்தஸ ஸமாஸ்ததா ॥
    yairnivāsastavāraṇyē mithō rājansamarthitaḥ ।
    araṇyē tē nivatsyanti caturdaṡa samāstathā ॥
    O King! Whosoever plotted your stay in forest
    shall find themselves living in the forest for fourteen years!
    2.23.23 அஹம் ததாஸாம் சேத்ஸ்யாமி பிதுஸ்தஸ்யாஸ்ச யா தவ ।
    அபிஷேகவிகாதேந புத்ரராஜ்யாய வர்ததே ॥
    ahaṃ tadāṡāṃ chētsyāmi pitustasyāṡca yā tava ।
    abhiṣēkavighātēna putrarājyāya vartatē ॥
    I shall extinguish the hope of father
    and the hope of that woman who wants to secure the kingdom
    for her son by preventing your crowning!
    2.23.24 மத்பலேந விருத்தாய ந ஸ்யாத்தைவபலம் ததா ।
    ப்ரபவிஷ்யதி து:காய யதோக்ரம் பௌருஷம் மம ॥
    madbalēna viruddhāya na syāddaivabalaṃ tathā ।
    prabhaviṣyati duḥkhāya yathōgraṃ pauruṣaṃ mama ॥
    One would incur more suffering
    by standing against my strength,
    than by standing against the strength of destiny!
    Such is my dreadful valor!
    2.23.25 ஊர்த்வம் வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராந்தே ப்ரஜாபால்யமநந்தரம் ।
    ஆர்யபுத்ரா: கரிஷ்யந்தி வநவாஸம் கதே த்வயி ॥
    ūrdhvaṃ varṣasahasrāntē prajāpālyamanantaram ।
    āryaputrāḥ kariṣyanti vanavāsaṃ gatē tvayi ॥
    May you rule the kingdom for over thousand years!
    And may your sons, O noble man, take over
    when you go to Vanas at the end of your rule!
    2.23.26 பூர்வம் ராஜர்ஷிவ்ருத்த்யா ஹி வநவாஸோ விதீயதே ।
    ப்ரஜா நிக்ஷிப்ய புத்ரேஷு புத்ரவத்பரிபாலநே ॥
    pūrvaṃ rājarṣivṛttyā hi vanavāsō vidhīyatē ।
    prajā nikṣipya putrēṣu putravatparipālanē ॥
    Custom holds, since ancient times,
    that Rājarshis retire in the Vanas,
    after entrusting their sons with ruling the people
    as if they are their own children!
    2.23.27-28 ஸ சேத்ராஜந்யநேகாக்ரே ராஜ்யவிப்ரமஸங்கயா ।
    நைவமிச்சஸி தர்மாத்மந் ராஜ்யம் ராம! த்வமாத்மநி ॥
    ப்ரதிஜாநே ச தே வீர! மாऽபூவம் வீரலோகபாக் ।
    ராஜ்யம் ச தவ ரக்ஷேயமஹம் வேலேவ ஸாகரம் ॥
    sa cēdrājanyanēkāgrē rājyavibhramaṡaṅkayā ।
    naivamicchasi dharmātman rājyaṃ rāma! tvamātmani ॥
    pratijānē ca tē vīra! mā'bhūvaṃ vīralōkabhāk ।
    rājyaṃ ca tava rakṣēyamahaṃ vēlēva sāgaram ॥
    O Rāma, O Dharmātma! I hope you are not apprehensive
    of disturbances arising in the kingdom
    because of the lack of the king’s wholehearted support!
    I swear to you, O Veera, that I will protect
    your kingdom like the shore protecting the ocean.
    Or else, may I never attain the afterworld of Veeras!
    2.23.29 மங்கலைரபிஷிஞ்சஸ்வ தத்ர த்வம் வ்யாப்ருதோ பவ ।
    அஹமேகோ மஹீபாலாநலம் வாரயிதும் பலாத் ॥
    maṅgalairabhiṣiñcasva tatra tvaṃ vyāpṛtō bhava ।
    ahamēkō mahīpālānalaṃ vārayituṃ balāt ॥
    May you focus on the proceedings of the consecration,
    with all the auspicious and sacred arrangements!
    I can singlehandedly ward off any opposing kings, by force!
    2.23.30-31a ந ஸோபார்தாவிமௌ பாஹூ ந தநுர்பூஷணாய மே ।
    நாऽஸிராபந்தநார்தாய ந ஸராஸ்தம்பஹேதவ: ॥
    அமித்ரதமநார்தம் மே ஸர்வமேதச்சதுஷ்டயம் ।
    na ṡōbhārthāvimau bāhū na dhanurbhūṣaṇāya mē ।
    nā'sirābanthanārthāya na ṡarāstambhahētavaḥ ॥
    amitradamanārthaṃ mē sarvamētaccatuṣṭayam ।
    These hands are not made for show,
    nor is this bow for ornament;
    this sword is not for tying around the waist,
    nor these arrows meant to remain inactive.
    All these four are meant for containing the foes!
    2.23.31b-32 ந சாஹம் காமயேऽத்யர்தம் யஸ்ஸ்யாச்சத்ருர்மதோ மம ॥
    அஸிநா தீக்ஷ்ணதாரேண வித்யுச்சலிதவர்சஸா ।
    ப்ரக்ருஹீதேந வை ஸத்ரும் வஜ்ரிணம் வா ந கல்பயே ॥
    na cāhaṃ kāmayē'tyarthaṃ yassyācchatrurmatō mama ॥
    asinā tīkṣṇadhārēṇa vidyuccalitavarcasā ।
    pragṛhītēna vai ṡatruṃ vajriṇaṃ vā na kalpayē ॥
    I do not like to have anyone alive
    whom I consider to be a foe.
    Armed with my sharp-edged sword
    that leaps like the flash of lightning,
    I hardly care about any foe,
    even if he is the wielder of the thunderbolt!
    2.23.33 கட்கநிஷ்பேஷநிஷ்பிஷ்டைர்கஹநா துஸ்சரா ச மே ।
    ஹஸ்த்யஸ்வநரஹஸ்தோருஸிரோபிர்பவிதா மஹீ ॥
    khaḍganiṣpēṣaniṣpiṣṭairgahanā duṡcarā ca mē ।
    hastyaṡvanarahastōruṡirōbhirbhavitā mahī ॥
    The earth shall be impassable, filled with
    the trunks, hands, thighs and heads of
    elephants, horses and men
    hacked and hewed by my sword.
    2.23.34 கட்கதாராஹதா மேऽத்ய தீப்யமாநா இவாத்ரய: ।
    பதிஷ்யந்தி த்விபா பூமௌ மேகா இவ ஸவித்யுத: ॥
    khaḍgadhārāhatā mē'dya dīpyamānā ivādrayaḥ ।
    patiṣyanti dvipā bhūmau mēghā iva savidyutaḥ ॥
    Hit by the strikes of my sword,
    elephants shall fall down on the ground like
    mountains in flames and clouds with lightning. The huge black bodies of elephants covered in blood are compared to mountains with red wild fires.


    The black bodies of elephants with huge white tusks are compared to black clouds accompanied by lightning.




    2.23.35 பத்தகோதாங்குலித்ராணே ப்ரக்ருஹீதஸராஸநே ।
    கதம் புருஷமாநீ ஸ்யாத்புருஷாணாம் மயி ஸ்திதே ॥
    baddhagōdhāṅgulitrāṇē pragṛhītaṡarāsanē ।
    kathaṃ puruṣamānī syātpuruṣāṇāṃ mayi sthitē ॥
    While I stand firmly holding the bow with my fingers
    donned by the skin of monitor lizard,
    how can any man dare boast of his manliness?
    2.23.36 பஹுபிஸ்சைகமத்யஸ்யந்நேகேந ச பஹூந்ஜநாந் ।
    விநியோக்ஷ்யாம்யஹம் பாணாந்ந்ருவாஜிகஜமர்மஸு ॥
    bahubhiṡcaikamatyasyannēkēna ca bahūnjanān ।
    viniyōkṣyāmyahaṃ bāṇānnṛvājigajamarmasu ॥
    I will cast each one far away with multiple arrows.
    I will cast many away with a single arrow.
    And I will cast my arrows at the vitals of
    men, horses and elephants.
    2.23.37 அத்ய மேऽஸ்த்ரப்ரபாவஸ்ய ப்ரபாவ: ப்ரபவிஷ்யதி ।
    ராஜ்ஞஸ்சாப்ரபுதாம் கர்தும் ப்ரபுத்வம் தவ ச ப்ரபோ: ॥
    adya mē'straprabhāvasya prabhāvaḥ prabhaviṣyati ।
    rājñaṡcāprabhutāṃ kartuṃ prabhutvaṃ tava ca prabhōḥ ॥
    My lord! Today, the power of my arrows can
    deprive the king of his authority and establish you in power.
    2.23.39 அத்ய சந்தநஸாரஸ்ய கேயூராமோக்ஷணஸ்ய ச ।
    வஸூநாம் ச விமோக்ஷஸ்ய ஸுஹ்ருதாம் பாலநஸ்ய ச ॥
    அநுரூபாவிமௌ பாஹூ ராம! கர்ம கரிஷ்யத: ।
    அபிஷேசநவிக்நஸ்ய கர்தऽணாம் தே நிவாரணே ॥
    adya candanasārasya kēyūrāmōkṣaṇasya ca ।
    vasūnāṃ ca vimōkṣasya suhṛdāṃ pālanasya ca ॥
    anurūpāvimau bāhū rāma! karma kariṣyataḥ ।
    abhiṣēcanavighnasya karta'ṇāṃ tē nivāraṇē ॥
    Today these arms of mine shall show themselves fit not merely
    for being decorated with sandal-paste and wearing armlets, or
    for dispensing largesse or for the defense of friends;
    but for engaging themselves, O Rāma, in repulsing those
    who interpose obstacles to your crowning.
    2.23.40 ப்ரவீஹி கோऽத்யைவ மயா வியுஜ்யதாம் ।
    தவா ஸுஹ்ருத்ப்ராணயஸஸ்ஸுஹ்ருஜ்ஜநை:
    யதா தவேயம் வஸுதா வஸே பவே
    த்ததைவ மாம் ஸாதி தவாஸ்மி கிங்கர: ॥
    bravīhi kō'dyaiva mayā viyujyatām ।
    tavā suhṛtprāṇayaṡassuhṛjjanaiḥ
    yathā tavēyaṃ vasudhā vaṡē bhavē
    ttathaiva māṃ ṡādhi tavāsmi kiṅkaraḥ ॥
    Tell me which of your enemies should be
    relieved of his life, fame and friends this very day!
    Command me with whatever to be done
    to bring this earth under your control!
    I am at your service!
    2.23.41 விம்ருஜ்ய பாஷ்பம் பரிஸாந்த்வ்யசாஸக்ருத்
    ஸ லக்ஷ்மணம் ராகவவம்ஸவர்தந: ।
    உவாச பித்ர்யே வசநே வ்யவஸ்திதம்
    நிபோத மாமேஷ ஹி ஸௌம்ய! ஸத்பத: ॥
    vimṛjya bāṣpaṃ parisāntvyacāsakṛt
    sa lakṣmaṇaṃ rāghavavaṃṡavardhanaḥ ।
    uvāca pitryē vacanē vyavasthitaṃ
    nibōdha māmēṣa hi saumya! satpathaḥ ॥
    Wiping Lakshmaṇa’s tears and
    calming him by repeated appeals,
    the enhancer of the fame of Raghu dynasty said:
    “Understand this clearly, my dear,
    I stand firmly by the words of father;
    for that is the right course!”
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்ரயோவிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē trayōviṃṡassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the twenty third Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
