Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 10
In this Sarga, Kaikēyee, completely brainwashed by Manthara, enters into the anger chamber, throws away all her ornaments, wears a dirty cloth and lies on the bare floor. Manthara is extremely pleased.
Daṡaratha enters his inner quarters and gets perturbed by not finding his dear wife waiting for him as usual. The attendant informs that she is in the anger chamber. He enters the anger chamber and tries to console her, promising that he would do and give whatever pleases her.
2.10.1 விதர்ஸிதா யதா தேவீ குப்ஜயா பாபயா ப்ருஸம் ।
ததா ஸேதே ஸ்ம ஸா பூமௌ திக்தவித்தேவ கிந்நரீ ॥
vidarṡitā yadā dēvī kubjayā pāpayā bhṛṡam ।
tadā ṡētē sma sā bhūmau digdhaviddhēva kinnarī ॥
Seriously misguided thus by that evil humpback
that queen laid on the ground like a
Kinnara woman struck by a poisoned dart.
2.10.2 நிஸ்சித்ய மநஸா க்ருத்யம் ஸா ஸம்யகிதி பாமிநீ ।
மந்தராயை ஸநைஸ்ஸர்வமாசசக்ஷே விசக்ஷணா ॥
niṡcitya manasā kṛtyaṃ sā samyagiti bhāminī ।
mantharāyai ṡanaissarvamācacakṣē vicakṣaṇā ॥
That pretty and skillful woman,
her mind clear about what was to be done,
revealed it to Manthara step by step.
2.10.3-4a ஸா தீநா நிஸ்சயம் க்ருத்வா மந்தராவாக்யமோஹிதா ।
நாககந்யேவ நிஸ்வஸ்ய தீர்கமுஷ்ணம் ச பாமிநீ ।
முஹூர்தம் சிந்தயாமாஸ மார்கமாத்மஸுகாவஹம் ॥
sā dīnā niṡcayaṃ kṛtvā mantharāvākyamōhitā ।
nāgakanyēva niṡvasya dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca bhāminī ।
muhūrtaṃ cintayāmāsa mārgamātmasukhāvaham ॥
Captivated by the words of Manthara,
that dejected pretty woman, having made up her mind,
heaved a long and burning sigh like a Nāga damsel,
thought for a moment about the next steps
that would engender her happiness.
2.10.4b-5a ஸா ஸுஹ்ருச்சார்தகாமா ச தம் நிஸம்ய ஸுநிஸ்சயம் ।
பபூவ பரமப்ரீதா ஸித்திம் ப்ராப்யேவ மந்தரா ॥
sā suhṛccārthakāmā ca taṃ niṡamya suniṡcayam ।
babhūva paramaprītā sidhdiṃ prāpyēva mantharā ॥
Manthara, Kaikēyee’s friend and well-wisher,
was extremely pleased to hear her resolve,
as if her objective was already accomplished.
2.10.5b-6a அத ஸா ருஷிதா தேவீ ஸம்யக்க்ருத்வா விநிஸ்சயம் ।
ஸம்விவேஸாபலா பூமௌ நிவேஸ்ய ப்ருகுடீம் முகே ॥
atha sā ruṣitā dēvī samyakkṛtvā viniṡcayam ।
saṃvivēṡābalā bhūmau nivēṡya bhṛkuṭīṃ mukhē ॥
Firmly resolved on her course,
that angry queen, of weaker gender,
lay on the ground with a frown on her face.
2.10.6b-7a ததஸ்சித்ராணி மால்யாநி திவ்யாந்யாபரணாநி ச ।
அபவித்தாநி கைகேய்யா தாநி பூமிம் ப்ரபேதிரே ॥
tataṡcitrāṇi mālyāni divyānyābharaṇāni ca ।
apaviddhāni kaikēyyā tāni bhūmiṃ prapēdirē ॥
The various flower garlands and splendid ornaments
that Kaikēyee had thrown lay scattered on the floor.
2.10.7b-8a தயா தாந்யபவித்தாநி மால்யாந்யாபரணாநி ச ।
அஸோபயந்த வஸுதாம் நக்ஷத்ராணி யதா நப: ॥
tayā tānyapaviddhāni mālyānyābharaṇāni ca ।
aṡōbhayanta vasudhāṃ nakṣatrāṇi yathā nabhaḥ ॥
All those garlands and ornaments strewn by her
adorned the earth like stars illumining the sky.
2.10.8b-9a க்ரோதாகாரே நிபதிதா ஸா பபௌ மலிநாம்பரா ।
ஏகவேணீம் த்ருடம் பத்வா கதஸத்த்வேவ கிந்நரீ ॥
krōdhāgārē nipatitā sā babhau malināmbarā ।
ēkavēṇīṃ dṛḍhaṃ badvā gatasattvēva kinnarī ॥
Fallen on the floor of the anger chamber,
clothes all soiled, hair bound firmly in a single knot,
she looked like a Kinnara woman
whose vitals were completely depleted.
2.10.9b-11a ஆஜ்ஞாப்ய ச மஹாராஜோ ராகவஸ்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
உபஸ்தாநமநுஜ்ஞாப்ய ப்ரவிவேஸ நிவேஸநம் ।
அத்ய ராமாபிஷேகோ வை ப்ரஸித்த இதி ஜஜ்ஞிவாந் ।
ப்ரியார்ஹாம் ப்ரியமாக்யாதும் விவேஸாந்த:புரம் வஸீ ॥
ājñāpya ca mahārājō rāghavasyābhiṣēcanam ।
upasthānamanujñāpya pravivēṡa nivēṡanam ।
adya rāmābhiṣēkō vai prasiddha iti jajñivān ।
priyārhāṃ priyamākhyātuṃ vivēṡāntaḥpuraṃ vaṡī ॥
The King who had everything under control,
having ordered the consecration of Rāma
and having taken due leave from those assembled,
entered the inner quarters to convey to his dear wife
the good news of Rāma’s consecration,
now that it was certain and well accepted by everyone. As has been mentioned a few times earlier, Vālmeeki is very visual with his narration. In the last few Sargas, the scene has been changing from one place to the other, from Daṡaratha’s court to Kousalyā’s palace to Rāma’s palace to the streets of Ayōdhyā to Kaikēyee’s home, all happening in parallel.
While the scene at Rāma’s palace and the streets of Ayōdhyā has advanced to the day of consecration, the scene at Kaikēyee’s palace and Daṡaratha’s court is still on the day before consecration.
At the end of Sarga 5, Vasishṭha, having gone to Rāma’s palace and initiating him to fast, returns to Daṡaratha’s court. At that point, Daṡaratha dismisses the court and enters his inner quarters. This Ṡlōka picks up from that point.
2.10.11b-12a ஸ கைகேய்யா க்ருஹம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டம் ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாயஸா: ।
பாண்டுராப்ரமிவாகாஸம் ராஹுயுக்தம் நிஸாகர: ॥
sa kaikēyyā gṛhaṃ ṡrēṣṭhaṃ pravivēṡa mahāyaṡāḥ ।
pāṇḍurābhramivākāṡaṃ rāhuyuktaṃ niṡākaraḥ ॥
That man of high renown entered Kaikēyee’s splendid apartments
like the moon entering the sky that is covered with white clouds,
and Rāhu lurking to eclipse.
Ancient astronomers of India tracked eclipses using the notion
of Rāhu and Kētu and treating them as shadow planets.
2.10.12b-17a ஸுகபர்ஹிணஸங்குஷ்டம் க்ரௌஞ்சஹம்ஸருதாயுதம் ।
வாதித்ரரவஸங்குஷ்டம் குப்ஜா வாமநிகாயுதம் ।
லதாக்ருஹைஸ்சித்ரக்ருஹைஸ்சம்பகாஸோகஸோபிதை: ।
தாந்தராஜதஸௌவர்ணவேதிகாபி ஸ்ஸமாயுதம் ।
நித்யபுஷ்பபலைர்வ்ருக்ஷைர்வாபீபிஸ்சோபஸோபிதம் ।
தாந்தரஜதஸௌவர்ணைஸ்ஸம்வ்ருதம் பரமாஸநை: ।
விவிதைரந்நபாநைஸ்ச பக்ஷ்யைஸ்ச விவிதைரபி ।
உபபந்நம் மஹார்ஹைஸ்ச பூஷிதைஸ்த்ரிதிவோபமம் ।
தத்ப்ரவிஸ்ய மஹாராஜஸ்ஸ்வமந்த: புரம்ருத்திமத் ।
ந ததர்ஸ ப்ரியாம் ராஜா கைகேயீம் ஸயநோத்தமே ॥
ṡukabarhiṇasaṅghuṣṭaṃ krauñcahaṃsarutāyutam ।
vāditraravasaṅghuṣṭaṃ kubjā vāmanikāyutam ।
latāgṛhaiṡcitragṛhaiṡcampakāṡōkaṡōbhitaiḥ ।
dāntarājatasauvarṇavēdikābhi ssamāyutam ।
nityapuṣpaphalairvṛkṣairvāpībhiṡcōpaṡōbhitam ।
dāntarajatasauvarṇaissaṃvṛtaṃ paramāsanaiḥ ।
vividhairannapānaiṡca bhakṣyaiṡca vividhairapi ।
upapannaṃ mahārhaiṡca bhūṣitaistridivōpamam ।
tatpraviṡya mahārājassvamantaḥ puramṛddhimat ।
na dadarṡa priyāṃ rājā kaikēyīṃ ṡayanōttamē ॥
The King entered his inner quarters that were
filled with parrots and peacocks,
pleasing with the sounds of swans and curlews,
permeated with music from many instruments,
filled with humpbacks and dwarfs,
enchanting with varieties of gazebos with vines
and Campaka and Aṡōka trees,
boasting of Vēdikas covered with gold and silver,
splendid with perennial flowering and fruit bearing trees
and wells inlayed with steps,
surrounded with chairs covered in gold and silver,
suffused with varieties of drinks, foods and dishes,
resembling heaven, full of women adorned with ornaments.
But he could not find his dear Kaikēyee on her splendid couch.
2.10.17b-18a ஸ காமபலஸம்யுக்தோ ரத்யர்தம் மநுஜாதிப: ।
அபஸ்யந்தயிதாம் பார்யாம் பப்ரச்ச விஷஸாத ச ॥
sa kāmabalasaṃyuktō ratyarthaṃ manujādhipaḥ ।
apaṡyandayitāṃ bhāryāṃ papraccha viṣasāda ca ॥
That ruler of the peoples,
filled with passion and seeking to make love,
but not finding his dear wife there,
felt very disappointed and asked for her.
2.10.18b-19a ந ஹி தஸ்ய புரா தேவீ தாம் வேலாமத்யவர்தத ।
ந ச ராஜா க்ருஹம் ஸூந்யம் ப்ரவிவேஸ கதாசந ॥
na hi tasya purā dēvī tāṃ vēlāmatyavartata ।
na ca rājā gṛhaṃ ṡūnyaṃ pravivēṡa kadācana ॥
Never before did the queen miss his arrival.
Never before did the king enter a deserted house.
2.10.19b-20a ததோ க்ருஹகதோ ராஜா கைகேயீம் பர்யப்ருச்சத ।
யதா பூர்வமவிஜ்ஞாய ஸ்வார்தலிப்ஸுமபண்டிதாம் ॥
tatō gṛhagatō rājā kaikēyīṃ paryapṛcchata ।
yathā pūrvamavijñāya svārthalipsumapaṇḍitām ॥
The King who thus entered the house,
asked for her as usual, unaware of
the foolish Kaikēyee’s intent of selfish ends.
2.10.20b-21a ப்ரதீஹாரீ த்வதோவாச ஸந்த்ரஸ்தா ஸுக்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: ।
தேவ தேவீ ப்ருஸம் க்ருத்தா க்ரோதாகாரமபித்ருதா ॥
pratīhārī tvathōvāca santrastā sukṛtāñjaliḥ ।
dēva dēvī bhṛṡaṃ kṛddhā krōdhāgāramabhidṛtā ॥
A trembling attendant, bowing with joined palms said:
“My Lord, her ladyship is extremely angry and
betook herself to the anger chamber!”
2.10.21b-22a ப்ரதீஹார்யா வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜா பரமதுர்மநா: ।
விஷஸாத புநர்பூயோ லுலிதவ்யாகுலேந்த்ரிய: ॥
pratīhāryā vacaṡṡṛtvā rājā paramadurmanāḥ ।
viṣasāda punarbhūyō lulitavyākulēndriyaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of the attendant,
the King who was already feeling bad
felt even worse, with all his senses disquieted.
2.10.22b-23a தத்ர தாம் பதிதாம் பூமௌ ஸயாநாமததோசிதாம் ।
ப்ரதப்த இவ து:கேந ஸோऽபஸ்யஜ்ஜகதீபதி: ॥
tatra tāṃ patitāṃ bhūmau ṡayānāmatathōcitām ।
pratapta iva duḥkhēna sō'paṡyajjagatīpatiḥ ॥
There, that lord of the land was burnt down by sadness
seeing her lying on the bare ground which was no bed for her.
2.10.23b-25 ஸ வ்ருத்தஸ்தருணீம் பார்யாம் ப்ராணேப்யோபி கரீயஸீம் ।
அபாப: பாபஸங்கல்பாம் ததர்ஸ தரணீதலே ।
லதாமிவ விநிஷ்க்ருத்தாம் பதிதாம் தேவதாமிவ ।
கிந்நரீமிவ நிர்தூதாம் ச்யுதாமப்ஸரஸம் யதா ।
மாயாமிவ பரிப்ரஷ்டாம் ஹரிணீமிவ ஸம்யதாம் ॥
sa vṛddhastaruṇīṃ bhāryāṃ prāṇēbhyōpi garīyasīm ।
apāpaḥ pāpasaṅkalpāṃ dadarṡa dharaṇītalē ।
latāmiva viniṣkṛttāṃ patitāṃ dēvatāmiva ।
kinnarīmiva nirdhūtāṃ cyutāmapsarasaṃ yathā ।
māyāmiva paribhraṣṭāṃ hariṇīmiva saṃyatām ॥
The old and straightforward man saw
the young and ill-intentioned woman,
his wife, who was dearer to him than his own life,
who was looking like a severed creeper, like a fallen goddess,
like a Kinnara woman hurled down,
like an Apsara slipped from heaven,
like an illusion fallen down and like a female deer caught. Vālmeeki contrasts the two people involved in the scene here as old vs. young and guileless vs. ill-intentioned.
Vālmeeki uses this contrasting technique in a few other occasions also, such as between Rāma and Ṡūrpaṇakhā, later in Araṇya Kāṇḍa.
2.10.26 கரேணுமிவ திக்தேந வித்தாம் ம்ருகயுநா வநே ।
மஹாகஜ இவாரண்யே ஸ்நேஹாத்பரிமமர்ஸ தாம் ॥
karēṇumiva digdhēna viddhāṃ mṛgayunā vanē ।
mahāgaja ivāraṇyē snēhātparimamarṡa tām ॥
He caressed her with affection,
like a majestic elephant would caress a female elephant
struck down in a jungle by a hunter with a poisoned dart.
2.10.27 பரிம்ருஸ்ய ச பாணிப்யாமபிஸம்த்ரஸ்தசேதந: ।
காமீ கமலபத்ராக்ஷீமுவாச வநிதாமிதம் ॥
parimṛṡya ca pāṇibhyāmabhisaṃtrastacētanaḥ ।
kāmī kamalapatrākṣīmuvāca vanitāmidam ॥
That infatuated man touched that wide eyed woman
with his hands, heSeetātingly, and said to her:
2.10.28-29a ந தேऽஹமபிஜாநாமி க்ரோதமாத்மநி ஸம்ஸ்ரிதம் ।
தேவி கேநாபிஸப்தாஸி கேந வாஸி விமாநிதா ।
யதிதம் மமம் து:காய ஸேஸே கல்யாணி பாம்ஸுஷு ॥
na tē'hamabhijānāmi krōdhamātmani saṃṡritam ।
dēvi kēnābhiṡaptāsi kēna vāsi vimānitā ।
yadidaṃ mamam duḥkhāya ṡēṡē kalyāṇi pāṃsuṣu ॥
O Queen, O Kalyāṇi! Little did I know that you are angry with me!
Did anyone say bad words to you? Did anyone insult you?
It pains me to see you lying down in the dust like this!
2.10.29b-30a பூமௌ ஸேஷே கிமர்தம் த்வம் மயி கல்யாணசேதஸி ।
பூதோபஹதசித்தேவ மம சித்தப்ரமாதிநீ ॥
bhūmau ṡēṣē kimarthaṃ tvaṃ mayi kalyāṇacētasi ।
bhūtōpahatacittēva mama cittapramāthinī ॥
While I am here to expend all good to you,
why do you hurt me by lying down on the floor,
as if possessed by evil spirits!
2.10.30b-31a ஸந்தி மே குஸலா வைத்யாஸ்த்வபிதுஷ்டாஸ்ச ஸர்வஸ: ।
ஸுகிதாம் த்வாம் கரிஷ்யந்தி வ்யாதிமாசக்ஷ்வ பாமிநி ॥
santi mē kuṡalā vaidyāstvabhituṣṭāṡca sarvaṡaḥ ।
sukhitāṃ tvāṃ kariṣyanti vyādhimācakṣva bhāmini ॥
There are many skilled and well-acclaimed royal physicians!
They can make you feel better, tell me if you are sick! Daṡaratha, in these Ṡlōkas, not knowing what he is going to be asked, shows his eagerness to oblige.
We have seen a similar situation in Sarga 18, when Daṡaratha was eager to oblige Viṡwāmitra, not knowing what he was going to hear.
2.10.31b-32a கஸ்ய வா தே ப்ரியம் கார்யம் கேந வா விப்ரியம் க்ருதம் ।
க: ப்ரியம் லபதாமத்ய கோ வா ஸுமஹதப்ரியம் ॥
kasya vā tē priyaṃ kāryaṃ kēna vā vipriyaṃ kṛtam ।
kaḥ priyaṃ labhatāmadya kō vā sumahadapriyam ॥
Tell me if you want to do favors to any one,
or if anyone had done anything to displease you!
Tell me whom I should extend favors upon and
who should receive my greatest displeasure!
2.10.32b-33 மா ரோதீர்மா ச கார்ஷிஸ்த்வம் தேவி ஸம்பரிஸோஷணம் ।
அவத்யோ வத்யதாம் கோ வா கோ வா வத்யோ விமுச்யதாம் ।
தரித்ர: கோ பவேதாட்யோ த்ரவ்யவாந்வாப்யகிஞ்சந: ॥
mā rōdīrmā ca kārṣistvaṃ dēvi saṃpariṡōṣaṇam ।
avadhyō vadhyatāṃ kō vā kō vā vadhyō vimucyatām ।
daridraḥ kō bhavēdāḍhyō dravyavānvāpyakiñcanaḥ ॥
My Queen! Please do not cry! Do not enervate yourself!
If it would please you,
may someone who deserves not, be killed,
and someone who deserves to be killed, be forgiven,
or may a destitute be made a rich man,
and may a wealthy man be turned into nobody!
2.10.34 அஹம் சைவ மதீயாஸ்ச ஸர்வே தவ வஸாநுகா: ।
ந தே கிம்சிதபிப்ராயம் வ்யாஹந்துமஹமுத்ஸஹே ॥
ahaṃ caiva madīyāṡca sarvē tava vaṡānugāḥ ।
na tē kiṃcidabhiprāyaṃ vyāhantumahamutsahē ॥
I and all of my people are at your service!
I dare not do even a little bit against your intention!
2.10.35-36a ஆத்மநோ ஜீவிதேநாபி ப்ருஹி யந்மநஸேச்சஸி ।
பலமாத்மநி ஜாநந்தீ ந மாம் ஸங்கிதுமர்ஹஸி ।
கரிஷ்யாமி தவ ப்ரீதிம் ஸுக்ருதேநாபி தே ஸபே ॥
ātmanō jīvitēnāpi bruhi yanmanasēcchasi ।
balamātmani jānantī na māṃ ṡaṅkitumarhasi ।
kariṣyāmi tava prītiṃ sukṛtēnāpi tē ṡapē ॥
Tell me whatever you would like from me, even if it means my life!
You shall not doubt me, as you very well know
the power you have over me!
I swear on all the good deeds I have done,
that I will do whatever pleases you!
2.10.36b-37 யாவதாவர்த தே சக்ரம் தாவதீ மே வஸுந்தரா ।
ப்ராசீநா: ஸிந்துஸௌவீரா: ஸௌராஷ்ட்ரா தக்ஷிணாபதா: ।
வங்காங்கமகதா மத்ஸ்யா: ஸம்ருத்தா: காஸிகோஸலா: ॥
yāvadāvarta tē cakraṃ tāvatī mē vasundharā ।
prācīnāḥ sindhusauvīrāḥ saurāṣṭrā dakṣiṇāpathāḥ ।
vaṅgāṅgamagadhā matsyāḥ samṛddhāḥ kāṡikōsalāḥ ॥
My lands extend everywhere where a wheel can roll,
to the countries of Sindhu, Souveera and Sourāshṭra,
to the countries of Vanga, Anga, Magadha and Matsya,
to the rich countries of Kāṡi and Kōsala and
to the countries towards East and South! Does this not remind us of the British Empire of the past century, in which the ‘sun never sets’?
Similarly, Daṡaratha’s empire extends to all lands wherever ‘a chariot can be driven’!
2.10.38 தத்ர ஜாதம் பஹுத்ரவ்யம் தநதாந்ய மஜாவிகம் ।
ததோ வ்ருணீஷ்வ கைகேயி யத்யத்த்வம் மநஸேச்சஸி ॥
tatra jātaṃ bahudravyaṃ dhanadhānya majāvikam ।
tatō vṛṇīṣva kaikēyi yadyattvaṃ manasēcchasi ॥
Many goods, including grain, sheep, goats
and wealth are produced there.
O Kaikēyee! Ask for anything from there, that you have mind to!
2.10.39 கிமாயாஸேந தே பீரு உத்திஷ்டோத்திஷ்ட ஸோபநே ।
தத்வம் மே ப்ரூஹி கைகேயி யதஸ்தே பயமாகதம் ।
தத்தே வ்யபநயிஷ்யாமி நீஹரமிவ ர்ஸ்மிவாந் ॥
kimāyāsēna tē bhīru uttiṣṭōttiṣṭa ṡōbhanē ।
tatvaṃ mē brūhi kaikēyi yatastē bhayamāgatam ।
tattē vyapanayiṣyāmi nīharamiva rṡmivān ॥
You don’t need to fret over anything, ye timorous one!
Get up, get up, ye beautiful!
Tell me, Kaikēyee, what is it that you fear!
I shall destroy it, as the sun would dispel mist with his rays!
2.10.40 ததோக்தா ஸா ஸமாஸ்வஸ்தா வக்துகாமா ததப்ரியம் ।
பரிபீடயிதும் பூயோ பர்தாரமுபசக்ரமே ॥
tathōktā sā samāṡvastā vaktukāmā tadapriyam ।
paripīḍayituṃ bhūyō bhartāramupacakramē ॥
Having been reassured by those words, and
having been intent on saying the disquieting words,
she started to harrow her husband, again.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே தஸமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē daṡamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the tenth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
