    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 4
    In this Sarga Daṡaratha speaks to Rāma in private about the consecration the next day. The concern about the Bharata factor comes into the open. Rāma meets Kousalyā, Sumitrā, Lakshmaṇa and Seetā in Kousalyā’s house.
    2.4.1-2 கதேஷ்வத ந்ருபோ பூய: பௌரேஷு ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபி: ।
    மந்த்ரயித்வா ததஸ்சக்ரே நிஸ்சயஜ்ஞஸ்ஸநிஸ்சயம் ॥
    ஸ்வ ஏவ புஷ்யோ பவிதாஸ்வோऽபிஷேச்யஸ்து மே ஸுத: ।
    ராமோ ராஜீவதாம்ராக்ஷோ யௌவராஜ்ய இதி ப்ரபு: ॥
    gatēṣvatha nṛpō bhūyaḥ paurēṣu saha mantribhiḥ ।
    mantrayitvā tataṡcakrē niṡcayajñassaniṡcayam ॥
    ṡva ēva puṣyō bhavitāṡvō'bhiṣēcyastu mē sutaḥ ।
    rāmō rājīvatāmrākṣō yauvarājya iti prabhuḥ ॥
    After the citizens had left, their lord, the king,
    who knew to weigh options, discussed again with his ministers,
    and pronounced his conclusion:


    “May Rāma, my son, the one with
    copper red colored eyes, wide like lotus petals,
    be consecrated as crown prince tomorrow,
    when the moon is in the constellation Pushya!” Copper red colored eyes - I wonder, is it like ‘honey eyes?’ ?
    2.4.3 அதாऽந்தர்க்ருஹமாவிஸ்ய ராஜா தஸரதஸ்ததா ।
    ஸூதமாமந்த்ரயாமாஸ ராமம் புநரிஹாநய ॥
    athā'ntargṛhamāviṡya rājā daṡarathastadā ।
    sūtamāmantrayāmāsa rāmaṃ punarihānaya ॥
    Then, the king Daṡaratha went to the inner quarters
    and directed the charioteer to fetch Rāma again. Sumantra seems to be special among the ministers, serving also as a personal secretary and personal driver. Sometimes his name is mentioned explicitly. At other times it is implied.
    2.4.4 ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய ஸ தத்வாக்யம் ஸூத: புநருபாயயௌ ।
    ராமஸ்ய பவநம் ஸீக்ரம் ராமமாநயிதும் புந: ॥
    pratigṛhya sa tadvākyaṃ sūtaḥ punarupāyayau ।
    rāmasya bhavanaṃ ṡīghraṃ rāmamānayituṃ punaḥ ॥
    Thus commanded, the charioteer went with all speed
    to Rāma’s residence to bring him again.
    2.4.5 த்வார்ஸ்தைராவேதிதம் தஸ்ய ராமாயாऽऽகமநம் புந: ।
    ஸ்ருத்வைவ சாபி ராமஸ்தம் ப்ராப்தம் ஸங்காந்விதோऽபவத் ॥
    dvārsthairāvēditaṃ tasya rāmāyā''gamanaṃ punaḥ ।
    ṡrutvaiva cāpi rāmastaṃ prāptaṃ ṡaṅkānvitō'bhavat ॥
    The doorkeepers conveyed about his arrival to Rāma.
    Hearing about his arrival again, Rāma wondered why.
    2.4.6 ப்ரவேஸ்ய சைநம் த்வரிதம் ராமோ வசநமப்ரவீத் ।
    யதாகமநக்ருத்யம் தே பூயஸ்தத்ப்ரூஹ்யஸேஷத: ॥
    pravēṡya cainaṃ tvaritaṃ rāmō vacanamabravīt ।
    yadāgamanakṛtyaṃ tē bhūyastadbrūhyaṡēṣataḥ ॥
    Rāma told them to admit him immediately, and said:
    “Tell me the reason for your being here again, in full!”
    2.4.7 தமுவாச தத ஸ்ஸூதோ ராஜா த்வாம் த்ரஷ்டுமிச்சதி ।
    ஸ்ருத்வா ப்ரமாணமத்ர த்வம் கமநாயேதராய வா ॥
    tamuvāca tata ssūtō rājā tvāṃ draṣṭumicchati ।
    ṡrutvā pramāṇamatra tvaṃ gamanāyētarāya vā ॥
    Then, the charioteer said:
    “All I can say is that the king wishes to see you.
    It is up to your discretion whether to go or not!”
    2.4.8 இதி ஸூதவசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா ராமோऽத த்வரயாऽந்வித: ।
    ப்ரயயௌ ராஜபவநம் புநர்த்ரஷ்டும் நரேஸ்வரம் ॥
    iti sūtavacaṡṡrutvā rāmō'tha tvarayā'nvitaḥ ।
    prayayau rājabhavanaṃ punardraṣṭuṃ narēṡvaram ॥
    Hearing those words of the charioteer,
    Rāma, with a sense of urgency,
    left to the king’s palace again to see the lord of the people.
    2.4.9 தம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸமநுப்ராப்தம் ராமம் தஸரதோ ந்ருப: ।
    ப்ரவேஸயாமாஸ க்ருஹம் விவக்ஷு: ப்ரியமுத்தமம் ॥
    taṃ ṡrutvā samanuprāptaṃ rāmaṃ daṡarathō nṛpaḥ ।
    pravēṡayāmāsa gṛhaṃ vivakṣuḥ priyamuttamam ॥
    Having heard that Rāma had arrived, King Daṡaratha
    had him admitted to tell him the best of news.
    2.4.10 ப்ரவிஸந்நேவ ச ஸ்ரீமாந்ராகவோ பவநம் பிது: ।
    ததர்ஸ பிதரம் தூராத்ப்ரணிபத்ய க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: ॥
    praviṡannēva ca ṡrīmānrāghavō bhavanaṃ pituḥ ।
    dadarṡa pitaraṃ dūrātpraṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥
    As soon as he entered the palace of the king,
    the richly endowed prince of Raghu dynasty
    saw his father from a distance and approached him
    with palms joined in reverence, and prostrated.
    2.4.11 ப்ரணமந்தம் ஸமுத்தாப்ய தம் பரிஷ்வஜ்ய பூமிப: ।
    ப்ரதிஸ்ய சாஸ்மை ருசிரமாஸநம் புநரப்ரவீத் ॥
    praṇamantaṃ samutthāpya taṃ pariṣvajya bhūmipaḥ ।
    pradiṡya cāsmai ruciramāsanaṃ punarabravīt ॥
    Raising him, who was prostrating, the king embraced him,
    offered a splendid seat, and then said:
    2.4.12 ராம! வ்ருத்தோऽஸ்மி தீர்காயுர்புக்தா போகா மயேப்ஸிதா: ।
    அந்நவத்பி: க்ரதுஸதை ஸ்ததேஷ்டம் பூரிதக்ஷிணை: ॥
    rāma! vṛddhō'smi dīrghāyurbhuktā bhōgā mayēpsitāḥ ।
    annavadbhiḥ kratuṡatai stathēṣṭaṃ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ॥
    O Rāma! I have lived a long life and I am old now.
    I enjoyed all the pleasures that I had a mind to.
    I have duly performed hundreds of Yajñas
    gifting away ample food and money! These Ṡlōkas are essentially a list of things that one would aspire to. Ṡlōka 14 is especially important. It puts the goals of life very succinctly as being two fold:


    1) to enjoy oneself
    2) to pay off the debts to the Dēvas, Ṛshis, ancestors and Brāhmaṇas.


    The second part categorizes the obligation of every person in a unique manner.


    Debt to Dēvas: The Indic concept of Dēvas is very straight forward. They simply represent the physical and conceptual powers that make up the static and dynamic nature of the universe.


    Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, are examples of conceptual powers of commissioning/creating, managing/protecting and decommissioning/dissolving.


    Panca Bhūtas and the related forces of the nature are the physical powers. That is why we consider Wind, Fire, Earth, Mountains, Rivers and such, as Dēvatas.


    Paying the debt of the Dēvas is done by being thankful to all the natural resources and preserving them, from the secular point of view, and doing Yajñas and giving offerings from the spiritual point of view.


    Debt to Ṛshis: Ṛshis are visionaries who establish systems or invent Mantras that give spiritual energy. Paying the debt of the Ṛshis is done by preserving the systems.


    Debt to Ancestors: We are here because of our ancestors. Paying the debt of the ancestors is done by providing and caring for our progeny, as our ancestors did for us.


    Debt to Brāhmaṇas: All sciences (Ṡāstras), both spiritual and temporal, which are a vital part of our living owe their existence to Brāhmaṇas. Paying the debt of Brāhmaṇas is done by giving provisions and funds to them.








    2.4.13 ஜாதமிஷ்டமபத்யம் மே த்வமத்யாநுபமம் புவி ।
    தத்தமிஷ்டமதீதம் ச மயா புருஷஸத்தம! ॥
    jātamiṣṭamapatyaṃ mē tvamadyānupamaṃ bhuvi ।
    dattamiṣṭamadhītaṃ ca mayā puruṣasattama! ॥
    O distinguished among men! In you,
    I have a son who has no parallel in the world today
    because of the charitable deeds, Yajñas and
    study of Vedas that I have done.
    2.4.14 அநுபூதாநி சேஷ்டாநி மயா வீர ஸுகாந்யபி ।
    தேவர்ஷிபித்ருவிப்ராணாமந்ருணோऽஸ்மி ததாऽத்மந: ॥
    anubhūtāni cēṣṭāni mayā vīra sukhānyapi ।
    dēvarṣipitṛviprāṇāmanṛṇō'smi tathā'tmanaḥ ॥
    O Veera! I have experienced every pleasure that I had mind to.
    I am also free of my debts to the
    Dēvas, Ṛshis and ancestors and Brāhmaṇas!
    2.4.15 ந கிஞ்சிந்மம கர்தவ்யம் தவாந்யத்ராபிஷேசநாத் ।
    அதோ யத்த்வாமஹம் ப்ரூயாம் தந்மே த்வம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
    na kiñcinmama kartavyaṃ tavānyatrābhiṣēcanāt ।
    atō yattvāmahaṃ brūyāṃ tanmē tvaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
    There is nothing left to be done for me except your consecration.
    Hence, may you do in accordance with
    what I am going to tell you now!
    2.4.16 அத்ய ப்ரக்ருதயஸ்ஸர்வாஸ்த்வாமிச்சந்தி நராதிபம் ।
    அதஸ்த்வாம் யுவராஜாநமபிஷேக்ஷ்யாமி புத்ரக ॥
    adya prakṛtayassarvāstvāmicchanti narādhipam ।
    atastvāṃ yuvarājānamabhiṣēkṣyāmi putraka ॥
    All the subjects want to see you as their ruler.
    My dear son! Hence I would like to
    consecrate you as the crown prince!
    2.4.17 அபி சாத்யாऽஸுபாந்ராம! ஸ்வப்நே பஸ்யாமி தாருணாந் ।
    ஸநிர்காதா திவோல்கா ச பததீஹ மஹாஸ்வநா ॥
    api cādyā'ṡubhānrāma! svapnē paṡyāmi dāruṇān ।
    sanirghātā divōlkā ca patatīha mahāsvanā ॥
    Besides, O Rāma, I am having frightening and ominous dreams!
    Meteors are seen even during day time along with loud thunder!
    2.4.18 அவஷ்டப்தம் ச மே ராம ! நக்ஷத்ரம் தாருணைர்க்ரஹை: ।
    ஆவேதயந்தி தைவஜ்ஞா: ஸூர்யாங்காரகராஹுபி: ॥
    avaṣṭabdhaṃ ca mē rāma ! nakṣatraṃ dāruṇairgrahaiḥ ।
    āvēdayanti daivajñāḥ sūryāṅgārakarāhubhiḥ ॥
    My natal star, say the astrologers, is beset by the
    malefic planets, the Sun, Mars and Rāhu.
    2.4.19 ப்ராயேண ஹி நிமித்தாநாமீத்ருஸாநாம் ஸமுத்பவே ।
    ராஜா ஹி ம்ருத்யுமாப்நோதி கோராம் வாऽऽபதம்ருச்சதி ॥
    prāyēṇa hi nimittānāmīdṛṡānāṃ samudbhavē ।
    rājā hi mṛtyumāpnōti ghōrāṃ vā''padamṛcchati ॥
    When such portents occur, it is considered, in general,
    that the King dies or faces grave calamity.
    2.4.20 தத்யாவதேவ மே சேதோ ந விமுஹ்யதி ராகவ! ।
    தாவதேவாபிஷிஞ்சஸ்வ சலா ஹி ப்ராணிநாம் மதி: ॥
    tadyāvadēva mē cētō na vimuhyati rāghava! ।
    tāvadēvābhiṣiñcasva calā hi prāṇināṃ matiḥ ॥
    O prince of Raghu dynasty!
    Hence, I like to see you consecrated
    while my mind is still thinking clearly;
    for the minds of all beings are fickle.
    2.4.21 அத்ய சந்த்ரோऽப்யுபகத: புஷ்யாத்பூர்வம் புநர்வஸூ ।
    ஸ்வ: புஷ்யயோகம் நியதம் வக்ஷ்யந்தே தைவசிந்தகா: ॥
    adya candrō'bhyupagataḥ puṣyātpūrvaṃ punarvasū ।
    ṡvaḥ puṣyayōgaṃ niyataṃ vakṣyantē daivacintakāḥ ॥
    Today the moon is in the constellation of Punarvasu
    which precedes the constellation of Pushya.
    Tomorrow, it will be in the constellation of Pushya,
    a conjunction that astrologers regard as auspicious.
    2.4.22 தத: புஷ்யேऽபிஷிஞ்சஸ்வ மநஸ்த்வரயதீவ மாம் ।
    ஸ்வஸ்த்வாऽஹமபிஷேக்ஷ்யாமி யௌவராஜ்யே பரந்தப! ॥
    tataḥ puṣyē'bhiṣiñcasva manastvarayatīva mām ।
    ṡvastvā'hamabhiṣēkṣyāmi yauvarājyē parantapa! ॥
    My mind urges me to consecrate you in that Pushya.
    O tormentor of foes! I shall
    consecrate you tomorrow as the crown prince,!
    2.4.23 தஸ்மாத்த்வயாऽத்ய ப்ரப்ருதி நிஸேயம் நியதாத்மநா ।
    ஸஹ வத்வோபவஸ்தவ்யா தர்பப்ரஸ்தரஸாயிநா ॥
    tasmāttvayā'dya prabhṛti niṡēyaṃ niyatātmanā ।
    saha vadhvōpavastavyā darbhaprastaraṡāyinā ॥
    Therefore may you fast starting tonight
    With full discipline and may you,
    along with my daughter-in-law
    sleep on the ground covered with Darbha grass.
    2.4.24 ஸுஹ்ருதஸ்சாப்ரமத்தாஸ்த்வாம் ரக்ஷந்த்வத்ய ஸமந்தத: ।
    பவந்தி பஹு விக்நாநி கார்யாண்யேவம்வித்நாநி ஹி ॥
    suhṛdaṡcāpramattāstvāṃ rakṣantvadya samantataḥ ।
    bhavanti bahu vighnāni kāryāṇyēvaṃvidhnāni hi ॥
    May your friends keep guard over you vigilantly on all sides.
    Indeed, events like these are liable to many impediments!
    2.4.25 விப்ரோஷிதஸ்ச பரதோ யாவதேவ புராதித: ।
    தாவதேவாபிஷேகஸ்தே ப்ராப்தகாலோ மதோ மம ॥
    viprōṣitaṡca bharatō yāvadēva purāditaḥ ।
    tāvadēvābhiṣēkastē prāptakālō matō mama ॥
    I feel that now, when Bharata is away from the city,
    is the right time for your consecration.
    2.4.26 காமம் கலு ஸதாம் வ்ருத்தே ப்ராதா தே பரதஸ்ஸ்தித: ।
    ஜ்யேஷ்டாநுவர்தீ தர்மாத்மா ஸாநுக்ரோஸோ ஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
    kāmaṃ khalu satāṃ vṛttē bhrātā tē bharatassthitaḥ ।
    jyēṣṭhānuvartī dharmātmā sānukrōṡō jitēndriyaḥ ॥
    Your brother Bharata is truly established
    in the path of virtuous people.
    He is a Dharmātma. He is compassionate.
    He has mastered his senses.
    And he conforms and abides by his elder brother.
    2.4.27 கிந்து சித்தம் மநுஷ்யாணாமநித்யமிதி மே மதி: ।
    ஸதாம் ச தர்மநித்யாநாம் க்ருதஸோபி ச ராகவ! ॥
    kintu cittaṃ manuṣyāṇāmanityamiti mē matiḥ ।
    satāṃ ca dharmanityānāṃ kṛtaṡōbhi ca rāghava! ॥
    Yet, O prince of Raghu dynasty, I feel
    that human nature won’t be the same at all times,
    even in the case of virtuous,
    well honed and Dharma-adhering people.
    2.4.28 இத்யுக்தஸ்ஸோऽப்யநுஜ்ஞாதஸ்ஸ்வோபாவிந்யபிஷேசநே ।
    வ்ரஜேதி ராம: பிதரமபிவாத்யாப்யயாத்க்ருஹம் ॥
    ityuktassō'bhyanujñātaṡṡvōbhāvinyabhiṣēcanē ।
    vrajēti rāmaḥ pitaramabhivādyābhyayādgṛham ॥
    Learning thus about the consecration next day,
    and getting permission to leave,
    Rāma paid obeisance to his father and left for his residence.
    2.4.29 ப்ரவிஸ்ய சாத்மநோ வேஸ்மராஜ்ஞோத்திஷ்டேऽபிஷேசநே ।
    தத்க்ஷணேந விநிர்கம்ய மாதுரந்த:புரம் யயௌ ॥
    praviṡya cātmanō vēṡmarājñōddiṣṭē'bhiṣēcanē ।
    tatkṣaṇēna vinirgamya māturantaḥpuraṃ yayau ॥
    Immediately after reaching home
    after the consecration was confirmed by the king,
    he left for the inner quarters of his mother.
    2.4.30 தத்ர தாம் ப்ரவணாமேவ மாதரம் க்ஷௌமவாஸிநீம் ।
    வாக்யதாம் தேவதாகாரே ததர்ஸாऽऽயாசதீம் ஸ்ரியம் ॥
    tatra tāṃ pravaṇāmēva mātaraṃ kṣaumavāsinīm ।
    vāgyatāṃ dēvatāgārē dadarṡā''yācatīṃ ṡriyam ॥
    He saw his mother there, in the Pūja room
    clad in silk garments, praying in silence for his well-being.
    2.4.31 ப்ராகேவ சாகதா தத்ர ஸுமித்ரா லக்ஷ்மண ஸ்ததா ।
    ஸீதா சாநாயிதா ஸ்ருத்வா ப்ரியம் ராமாபிஷேசநம் ॥
    prāgēva cāgatā tatra sumitrā lakṣmaṇa stathā ।
    sītā cānāyitā ṡrutvā priyaṃ rāmābhiṣēcanam ॥
    Sumitrā and Lakshmaṇa were already there,
    hearing the news of Rāma’s consecration.
    Seetā had also been requested to be there, by then.
    2.4.32 தஸ்மிந் காலே ஹி கௌஸல்யா தஸ்தாவாமீலிதேக்ஷணா ।
    ஸுமித்ரயாऽந்வாஸ்யமாநா ஸீதயா லக்ஷ்மணேந ச ॥
    tasmin kālē hi kausalyā tasthāvāmīlitēkṣaṇā ।
    sumitrayā'nvāsyamānā sītayā lakṣmaṇēna ca ॥
    At that time, attended by Sumitrā, Seetā and Lakshmaṇa,
    Kousalyā was seen there sitting with eyes half-closed.
    2.4.33 ஸ்ருத்வா புஷ்யேண புத்ரஸ்ய யௌவராஜ்யாऽபிஷேசநம் ।
    ப்ராணாயாமேந புருஷம் த்யாயமாநா ஜநார்தநம் ॥
    ṡrutvā puṣyēṇa putrasya yauvarājyā'bhiṣēcanam ।
    prāṇāyāmēna puruṣaṃ dhyāyamānā janārdanam ॥
    Having heard about the consecration of her son as the crown prince
    when moon would be in the Pushya constellation,
    she was doing Prānāyāma, meditating upon Janārdana.
    Janārdana is another name for Vishṇu.
    2.4.34 ததா ஸநியமாமேவ ஸோऽபிகம்யாபிவாத்ய ச ।
    உவாச வசநம் ராமோ ஹர்ஷயம்ஸ்தாமிதம் ததா ॥
    tathā saniyamāmēva sō'bhigamyābhivādya ca ।
    uvāca vacanaṃ rāmō harṣayaṃstāmidaṃ tadā ॥
    Then Rāma approached her, who was still in those observances,
    and after paying obeisance, said these pleasing words:
    2.4.35 அம்ப! பித்ரா நியுக்தோऽஸ்மி ப்ரஜாபாலநகர்மணி ।
    பவிதா ஸ்வோऽபிஷேகோ மே யதா மே ஸாஸநம் பிது: ॥
    amba! pitrā niyuktō'smi prajāpālanakarmaṇi ।
    bhavitā ṡvō'bhiṣēkō mē yathā mē ṡāsanaṃ pituḥ ॥
    O mother! I have been commissioned by father
    with the responsibilities of governing the people.
    By his order, the consecration will be taking place tomorrow.
    2.4.36 ஸீதயாப்யுபவஸ்தவ்யா ரஜநீயம் மயா ஸஹ ।
    ஏவம்ருத்விகுபாத்யாயை ஸ்ஸஹ மாமுக்தவாந்பிதா ॥
    sītayāpyupavastavyā rajanīyaṃ mayā saha ।
    ēvamṛtvigupādhyāyai ssaha māmuktavānpitā ॥
    Father, along with Ṛtviks and Upādhyāyas
    told me to fast tonight along with Seetā.
    2.4.37 யாநி யாந்யத்ர யோக்யாநி ஸ்வோபாவிந்யபிஷேசநே ।
    தாநி மே மங்கலாந்யத்ய வைதேஹ்யாஸ்சைவ காரய ॥
    yāni yānyatra yōgyāni ṡvōbhāvinyabhiṣēcanē ।
    tāni mē maṅgalānyadya vaidēhyāṡcaiva kāraya ॥
    May you help with the performance of all auspicious rites
    that are appropriate for me and the princess of Vidēha
    ahead of the consecration tomorrow!
    2.4.38 ஏதச்ச்ருத்வா து கௌஸல்யா சிரகாலாபிகாங்க்ஷிதம் ।
    ஹர்ஷபாஷ்பகலம் வாக்யமிதம் ராமமபாஷத ॥
    ētacchrutvā tu kausalyā cirakālābhikāṅkṣitam ।
    harṣabāṣpakalaṃ vākyamidaṃ rāmamabhāṣata ॥
    Hearing those words for which she was waiting for a long time,
    Kousalyā said these words to Rāma
    while her eyes were blurred with tears of joy:
    2.4.39 வத்ஸ! ராம! சிரம் ஜீவ ஹதாஸ்தே பரிபந்திந: ।
    ஜ்ஞாதீந்மே த்வம் ஸ்ரியா யுக்த ஸ்ஸுமித்ராயாஸ்ச நந்தய ॥
    vatsa! rāma! ciraṃ jīva hatāstē paripanthinaḥ ।
    jñātīnmē tvaṃ ṡriyā yukta ssumitrāyāṡca nandaya ॥
    My dear Rāma! May you be blessed with long life!
    May those who wish you ill be destroyed.
    May you prosper and bring delight to
    my side of the family as well as to that of Sumitrā.
    2.4.40 கல்யாணே பத நக்ஷத்ரே மயி ஜாதோऽஸி புத்ரக ।
    யேந த்வயா தஸரதோ குணைராராதித: பிதா ॥
    kalyāṇē bata nakṣatrē mayi jātō'si putraka ।
    yēna tvayā daṡarathō guṇairārādhitaḥ pitā ॥
    My dear! You are born to me under such an auspicious star,
    that you are able to please your father Daṡaratha,
    with all your great virtues.
    2.4.41 அமோகம் பத மே க்ஷாந்தம் புருஷே புஷ்கரேக்ஷணே ।
    யேயமிக்ஷ்வாகுராஜ்யஸ்ரீ: புத்ர த்வாம் ஸம்ஸ்ரயிஷ்யதி ॥
    amōghaṃ bata mē kṣāntaṃ puruṣē puṣkarēkṣaṇē ।
    yēyamikṣvākurājyaṡrīḥ putra tvāṃ saṃṡrayiṣyati ॥
    My unwavering faith and devotion in
    the lotus eyed Vishnu had proven to be of merit,
    because of which the fortune of the kingdom of Ikshwāku
    has chosen you, my son!
    2.4.42 இத்யேவமுக்தோ மாத்ரேதம் ராமோ ப்ராதரமப்ரவீத் ।
    ப்ராஞ்ஜலிம் ப்ரஹ்வமாஸீநமபிவீக்ஷ்ய ஸ்மயந்நிவ ॥
    ityēvamuktō mātrēdaṃ rāmō bhrātaramabravīt ।
    prāñjaliṃ prahvamāsīnamabhivīkṣya smayanniva ॥
    Thus spoken to by his mother,
    he then spoke, with a smile, to his brother
    whom he saw standing there with
    palms joined in a humble manner.
    2.4.43 லக்ஷ்மணேமாம் மயா ஸார்தம் ப்ரஸாதி த்வம் வஸுந்தராம் ।
    த்விதீயம் மேऽந்தராத்மாநம் த்வாமியம் ஸ்ரீருபஸ்திதா ॥
    lakṣmaṇēmāṃ mayā sārdhaṃ praṡādhi tvaṃ vasundharām ।
    dvitīyaṃ mē'ntarātmānaṃ tvāmiyaṃ ṡrīrupasthitā ॥
    O Lakshmaṇa! May you also govern this earth along with me!
    This great fortune covets you as much,
    as you are none other than my second self!
    2.4.44 ஸௌமித்ரே! புங்க்ஷ்வ போகாம்த்ஸ்வமிஷ்டாந்ராஜ்யபலாநி ச ।
    ஜீவிதம் ச ஹி ராஜ்யம் ச த்வதர்தமபிகாமயே ॥
    saumitrē! bhuṅkṣva bhōgāṃtsvamiṣṭānrājyaphalāni ca ।
    jīvitaṃ ca hi rājyaṃ ca tvadarthamabhikāmayē ॥
    O dear son of Sumitrā! May you enjoy all that
    comes to your mind and all the fruits of this kingdom!
    This life and kingdom, I desire, only for your sake!
    2.4.45 இத்யுக்த்வா லக்ஷ்மணம் ராமோ மாதராவபிவாத்ய ச ।
    அப்யநுஜ்ஞாப்ய ஸீதாம் ச ஜகாம ஸ்வம் நிவேஸநம் ॥
    ityuktvā lakṣmaṇaṃ rāmō mātarāvabhivādya ca ।
    abhyanujñāpya sītāṃ ca jagāma svaṃ nivēṡanam ॥
    Having said this to Lakshmaṇa,
    having paid obeisance to the mothers and
    having obtained the permission to leave,
    Rāma left for his residence along with Seetā.
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே சதுர்தஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē caturthassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the fourth Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
