Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 2
In this Sarga, Daṡaratha announces his intention to consecrate Rāma as the crown prince and seeks the approval of Brāhmaṇas, kings, and prominent people from cities and rural areas. He receives a resounding approval in unequivocal terms, to do so.
2.2.1
தத: பரிஷதம் ஸர்வாமாமந்த்ர்ய வஸுதாதிப: ।
ஹிதமுத்தர்ஷணம் சைவமுவாச ப்ரதிதம் வச: ॥
tataḥ pariṣadaṃ sarvāmāmantrya vasudhādhipaḥ ।
hitamuddharṣaṇaṃ caivamuvāca prathitaṃ vacaḥ ॥
Then, the ruler of the earth, addressing the entire assembly,
proclaimed the thrilling, celebrated and beneficial words:
2.2.3
துந்துபிஸ்வநகல்பேந கம்பீரேணாநுநாதிநா ।
ஸ்வரேண மஹதா ராஜா ஜீமூத இவ நாதயந் ।
ராஜலக்ஷணயுக்தேந காந்தேநாநுபமேந ச ।
உவாச ரஸயுக்தேந ஸ்வரேண ந்ருபதிர்ந்ருபாந் ॥
dundubhisvanakalpēna gambhīrēṇānunādinā ।
svarēṇa mahatā rājā jīmūta iva nādayan ।
rājalakṣaṇayuktēna kāntēnānupamēna ca ।
uvāca rasayuktēna svarēṇa nṛpatirnṛpān ॥
The King spoke to the kings in a unique voice
that rumbled like a rain-cloud,
with notes that reminded a kettle drum,
so sublime and resonant, and yet so regal,
with something in it that was at once singular and sweet.
2.2.4
விதிதம் பவதாமேதத்யதா மே ராஜ்யமுத்தமம் ।
பூர்வகைர்மம ராஜேந்த்ரைஸ்ஸுதவத்பரிபாலிதம் ॥
viditaṃ bhavatāmētadyathā mē rājyamuttamam ।
pūrvakairmama rājēndraissutavatparipālitam ॥
It is well-known to all of you that this greatest kingdom
was well governed by great kings, my ancestors,
as if it was their dear child.
2.2.5
ஸோऽஹமிக்ஷ்வாகுபிஸ்ஸர்வைர்நரேந்த்ரை: பரிபாலிதம் ।
ஸ்ரேயஸா யோக்துகாமோऽஸ்மி ஸுகார்ஹமகிலம் ஜகத் ॥
sō'hamikṣvākubhissarvairnarēndraiḥ paripālitam ।
ṡrēyasā yōktukāmō'smi sukhārhamakhilaṃ jagat ॥
My interest is also in the
welfare of this entire, deserving, world,
just as it had been for
all the kings of the Ikshwāku dynasty.
2.2.6
மயாப்யாசரிதம் பூர்வை: பந்தாநமநுகச்சதா ।
ப்ரஜா நித்யமநித்ரேண யதாஸக்த்யபிரக்ஷிதா: ॥
mayāpyācaritaṃ pūrvaiḥ panthānamanugacchatā ।
prajā nityamanidrēṇa yathāṡaktyabhirakṣitāḥ ॥
Following in the footsteps of my forefathers,
I have been protecting the people to the best of
my abilities by being ever vigilant.
2.2.7
இதம் ஸரீரம் க்ருத்ஸ்நஸ்ய லோகஸ்ய சரதா ஹிதம் ।
பாண்டுரஸ்யாऽதபத்ரஸ்யச்சாயாயாம் ஜரிதம் மயா ॥
idaṃ ṡarīraṃ kṛtsnasya lōkasya caratā hitam ।
pāṇḍurasyā'tapatrasyacchāyāyāṃ jaritaṃ mayā ॥
This body of mine has aged
while ensuring the well being of this entire world
under the shade of the white royal umbrella.
2.2.8
ப்ராப்ய வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி பஹூந்யாயூம்ஷி ஜீவத: ।
ஜீர்ணஸ்யாஸ்ய ஸரீரஸ்ய விஸ்ராந்திமபிரோசயே ॥
prāpya varṣasahasrāṇi bahūnyāyūṃṣi jīvataḥ ।
jīrṇasyāsya ṡarīrasya viṡrāntimabhirōcayē ॥
Having lived for many thousands of years,
this worn out body is looking forward for retiring.
2.2.9
ராஜப்ரபாவஜுஷ்டாம் ஹி துர்வஹாமஜிதேந்த்ரியை: ।
பரிஸ்ராந்தோऽஸ்மி லோகஸ்ய குர்வீம் தர்மதுரம் வஹந் ॥
rājaprabhāvajuṣṭāṃ hi durvahāmajitēndriyaiḥ ।
pariṡrāntō'smi lōkasya gurvīṃ dharmadhuraṃ vahan ॥
I am now tired, having served the mightiest of the
responsibilities in the world, of keeping the Dharma,
that calls for a variety of leadership qualities
and full control of the senses.
2.2.10
ஸோऽஹம் விஸ்ரமமிச்சாமி புத்ரம் க்ருத்வா ப்ரஜாஹிதே ।
ஸந்நிக்ருஷ்டாநிமாந்ஸர்வாநநுமாந்ய த்விஜர்ஷபாந் ॥
sō'haṃ viṡramamicchāmi putraṃ kṛtvā prajāhitē ।
sannikṛṣṭānimānsarvānanumānya dvijarṣabhān ॥
Hence, I would like to retire myself,
after convincing all these assembled Brāhmaṇas,
and after entrusting the responsibility of
the welfare of people to my son.
2.2.11
அநுஜாதோ ஹி மாம் ஸர்வைர்குணைர்ஜ்யேஷ்டோ மமாத்மஜ: ।
புரந்தரஸமோ வீர்யே ராம: பரபுரஞ்ஜய: ॥
anujātō hi māṃ sarvairguṇairjyēṣṭhō mamātmajaḥ ।
purandarasamō vīryē rāmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ ॥
My eldest son Rāma, conqueror of enemy cities
equal in prowess to Indra and
endowed with the best of the qualities,
has taken after me.
2.2.12
தம் சந்த்ரமிவ புஷ்யேண யுக்தம் தர்மப்ருதாம் வரம் ।
யௌவராஜ்யே நியோக்தாऽஸ்மி ப்ரீத: புருஷபுங்கவம் ॥
taṃ candramiva puṣyēṇa yuktaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ varam ।
yauvarājyē niyōktā'smi prītaḥ puruṣapuṅgavam ॥
It is my pleasure to crown him, the best among men,
best among the upholders of Dharma and
glowing like moon in conjunction with star Pushyami,
as the heir-apparent.
2.2.13
அநுரூபஸ்ஸ வை நாதோ லக்ஷ்மீவாந் லக்ஷ்மணாக்ரஜ: ।
த்ரைலோக்யமபி நாதேந யேநஸ்யாந்நாதவத்தரம் ॥
anurūpassa vai nāthō lakṣmīvān lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ ।
trailōkyamapi nāthēna yēnasyānnāthavattaram ॥
The lustrous elder brother of Lakshmaṇa
who can make the best ruler for all the three worlds
would certainly be a befitting ruler.
2.2.14
அநேந ஸ்ரேயஸா ஸத்யஸ்ஸம்யோஜ்யைவமிமாம் மஹீம் ।
கதக்லேஸோ பவிஷ்யாமி ஸுதே தஸ்மிந்நிவேஸ்ய வை ॥
anēna ṡrēyasā sadyassaṃyōjyaivamimāṃ mahīm ।
gataklēṡō bhaviṣyāmi sutē tasminnivēṡya vai ॥
I shall be relieved of my worries
by immediately entrusting the rule of this land
to my son, for its continued welfare.
2.2.15
யதிதம் மேऽநுரூபார்தம் மயா ஸாது ஸுமந்த்ரிதம் ।
பவந்தோ மேऽநுமந்யந்தாம் கதம் வா கரவாண்யஹம் ॥
yadidaṃ mē'nurūpārthaṃ mayā sādhu sumantritam ।
bhavantō mē'numanyantāṃ kathaṃ vā karavāṇyaham ॥
Let me know whether this,
which I have planned out after careful consideration,
is agreeable to you all, or what shall be done!
2.2.16
யத்யப்யேஷா மம ப்ரீதிர்ஹிதமந்யத்விசிந்த்யதாம் ।
அந்யாமத்யஸ்தசிந்தா ஹி விமர்தாப்யதிகோதயா ॥
yadyapyēṣā mama prītirhitamanyadvicintyatām ।
anyāmadhyasthacintā hi vimardābhyadhikōdayā ॥
Even though this is what I would like,
may you please think of all possible good alternatives!
Impartial considerations that are deliberated well,
would only yield the best results!
2.2.17
இதி ப்ருவந்தம் முதிதா: ப்ரத்யநந்தந்ந்ருபா ந்ருபம் ।
வ்ருஷ்டிமந்தம் மஹாமேகம் நர்தந்த இவ பர்ஹிண: ॥
iti bruvantaṃ muditāḥ pratyanandannṛpā nṛpam ।
vṛṣṭimantaṃ mahāmēghaṃ nardanta iva barhiṇaḥ ॥
When the king spoke thus,
the delighted kings applauded him like
peacocks welcoming the monsoon clouds with ecstasy.
2.2.18
ஸ்நிக்தோऽநுநாதீ ஸம்ஜஜ்ஞே தத்ர ஹர்ஷஸமீரித: ।
ஜநௌகோத்குஷ்டஸந்நாதோ விமாநம் கம்பயந்நிவ ॥
snigdhō'nunādī saṃjajñē tatra harṣasamīritaḥ ।
janaughōdghuṣṭasannādō vimānaṃ kampayanniva ॥
And therewith rose a mighty huzza of approval
from the friendly and delighted crowd,
that reverberated and seemed to be shaking
that lofty council chamber.
2.2.20
தஸ்ய தர்மார்தவிதுஷோ பாவமாஜ்ஞாய ஸர்வஸ: ।
ப்ராஹ்மணா ஜநமுக்யாஸ்ச பௌரஜாநபதைஸ்ஸஹ ।
ஸமேத்ய மந்த்ரயித்வா து ஸமதாகதபுத்தய: ।
ஊசுஸ்ச மநஸா ஜ்ஞாத்வா வ்ருத்தம் தஸரதம் ந்ருபம் ॥
tasya dharmārthaviduṣō bhāvamājñāya sarvaṡaḥ ।
brāhmaṇā janamukhyāṡca paurajānapadaissaha ।
samētya mantrayitvā tu samatāgatabuddhayaḥ ।
ūcuṡca manasā jñātvā vṛddhaṃ daṡarathaṃ nṛpam ॥
Having understood the view point of
that savant of Dharma and Artha, in full,
Brāhmaṇas, kings and other prominent men,
along with the representatives from cities and villages
joined together and deliberated.
Having arrived at an unanimous conclusion,
they addressed the aged king Daṡaratha, in full awareness:
2.2.21
அநேகவர்ஷஸாஹஸ்ரோ வ்ருத்தஸ்த்வமஸி பார்திவ ।
ஸ ராமம் யுவராஜாநமபிஷிஞ்சிஸ்வ பார்திவம் ॥
anēkavarṣasāhasrō vṛddhastvamasi pārthiva ।
sa rāmaṃ yuvarājānamabhiṣiñcisva pārthivam ॥
O Ruler of the earth!
Indeed, you are thousands of years old.
Hence please consecrate Rāma as the
crown prince to rule the kingdom!
2.2.22
இச்சாமோ ஹி மஹாபாஹும் ரகுவீரம் மஹாபலம் ।
கஜேந மஹதாऽயாந்தம் ராமம் சத்ராவ்ருதாநநம் ॥
icchāmō hi mahābāhuṃ raghuvīraṃ mahābalam ।
gajēna mahatā'yāntaṃ rāmaṃ chatrāvṛtānanam ॥
We want to see the mighty strong,
mighty-armed Rāma, the hero of Raghu dynasty,
riding on a mighty elephant,
with his face shaded by the white umbrella of state.
2.2.23
இதி தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜா தேஷாம் மந:ப்ரியம் ।
அஜாநந்நிவ ஜிஜ்ஞாஸுரிதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
iti tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā rājā tēṣāṃ manaḥpriyaṃ ।
ajānanniva jijñāsuridaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
On hearing those words that reflected their hearts’ desire,
the King asked inquisitively, as if
he were not aware of the answer:
Recall the similar instance in Sarga 16 of Bāla Kāṇḍa. Lord Vishṇu asks (1.16.2) the Dēvas, whether they know of any Upāya to kill the evil-minded Rāvaṇa, even though he is fully aware of the answer.
This approach is part of what makes a great leader. The leader should be fully aware of the answer that people would seek. Yet he should give them an opportunity to express it in their own words.
2.2.24
ஸ்ருத்வைவ வசநம் யந்மே ராகவம் பதிமிச்சத ।
ராஜாந: ஸ்ஸம்ஸயோऽயம் மே கிமிதம் ப்ரூத தத்த்வத: ॥
ṡrutvaiva vacanaṃ yanmē rāghavaṃ patimicchatha ।
rājānaḥ ssaṃṡayō'yaṃ mē kimidaṃ brūta tattvataḥ ॥
As soon as you heard my words,
you are telling me that you like Rāma to be the lord.
O kings! That makes me wonder why it is so!
You must tell me exactly what you are feeling!
2.2.25
கதம் நு மயி தர்மேண ப்ருதிவீமநுஸாஸதி ।
பவந்தோ த்ரஷ்டுமிச்சந்தி யுவராஜம் மமாத்மஜம் ॥
kathaṃ nu mayi dharmēṇa pṛthivīmanuṡāsati ।
bhavantō draṣṭumicchanti yuvarājaṃ mamātmajam ॥
Why do you want to see my son as the crown prince
while I am ruling this land just fine, with Dharma?
2.2.26
தே தமூசுர்மஹாத்மாநம் பௌரஜாநபதைஸ்ஸஹ ।
பஹவோ ந்ருப கல்யாணா குணா: புத்ரஸ்ய ஸந்தி தே ॥
tē tamūcurmahātmānaṃ paurajānapadaissaha ।
bahavō nṛpa kalyāṇā guṇāḥ putrasya santi tē ॥
Then, they, along with the people
of cities and rural areas spoke to that Mahātma:
“There are many good and auspicious qualities in your son!”
2.2.27
குணாந் குணவதோ தேவ தேவகல்பஸ்ய தீமத: ।
ப்ரியாநாநந்தநாந்க்ருத்ஸ்நாந்ப்ரவக்ஷ்யாமோऽத்ய தாந் ஸ்ருணு ॥
guṇān guṇavatō dēva dēvakalpasya dhīmataḥ ।
priyānānandanānkṛtsnānpravakṣyāmō'dya tān ṡṛṇu ॥
O king! Please listen! We shall now speak about
all the endearing and delightful virtues of wise Rāma,
who is comparable to Dēvas.
2.2.28
திவ்யைர்குணைஸ்ஸக்ரஸமோ ராமஸ்ஸத்யபராக்ரம: ।
இக்ஷ்வாகுப்யோऽபி ஸர்வேப்யோ ஹ்யதிரிக்தோ விஸாம்பதே ॥
divyairguṇaiṡṡakrasamō rāmassatyaparākramaḥ ।
ikṣvākubhyō'pi sarvēbhyō hyatiriktō viṡāṃpatē ॥
O Daṡaratha, the lord of the peoples!
Rāma is of proven valor.
He is equal to Indra in his divine virtues.
He surpasses everyone in the Ikshwāku dynasty easily!
2.2.29
ராமஸ்ஸத்புருஷோ லோகே ஸத்யதர்மபராயண: ।
ஸாக்ஷாத்ராமாத்விநிர்வ்ருத்தோ தர்மஸ்சாபி ஸ்ரியா ஸஹ ॥
rāmassatpuruṣō lōkē satyadharmaparāyaṇaḥ ।
sākṣādrāmādvinirvṛttō dharmaṡcāpi ṡriyā saha ॥
Rāma is most venerable of the men in this world.
He is fully devoted to Truth and Dharma.
From him alone, can emerge
Dharma together with prosperity.
Becoming rich is the objective. Being righteous is an obligation. The two always do not go together. Becoming rich the right way is far more challenging than the wrong way.
This challenge is not specific to the current times. It existed even in the days of Rāmāyaṇa. Rāma earned the trust of the people that he can bring riches and prosperity, without compromising one for the other.
2.2.30
ப்ரஜாஸுகத்த்வே சந்த்ரஸ்ய வஸுதாயா: க்ஷமாகுணை: ।
புத்த்யா ப்ருஹஸ்பதேஸ்துல்யோ வீர்யே ஸாக்ஷாச்சசீபதே: ॥
prajāsukhattvē candrasya vasudhāyāḥ kṣamāguṇaiḥ ।
buddhyā bṛhaspatēstulyō vīryē sākṣācchacīpatēḥ ॥
He is like moon in making people happy,
like earth in forbearance, like Bṛihaspati in wisdom
and like none other than Indra in prowess.
2.2.31
தர்மஜ்ஞஸ்ஸத்யஸந்தஸ்ச ஸீலவாநநஸூயக: ।
க்ஷாந்தஸ்ஸாந்த்வயிதா ஸ்லக்ஷ்ண: க்ருதஜ்ஞோ விஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
dharmajñassatyasandhaṡca ṡīlavānanasūyakaḥ ।
kṣāntassāntvayitā ṡlakṣṇaḥ kṛtajñō vijitēndriyaḥ ॥
He is a savant of Dharma, adherent of Truth.
He has a remarkable character and free from envy.
He is patient and comforting.
He is soft spoken, grateful and
has full mastery over the senses.
2.2.33
ம்ருதுஸ்ச ஸ்திரசித்தஸ்ச ஸதா பவ்யோऽநஸூயக: ।
ப்ரியவாதீ ச பூதாநாம் ஸத்யவாதீ ச ராகவ: ॥
பஹுஸ்ருதாநாம் வ்ருத்தாநாம் ப்ராஹ்மணாநாமுபாஸிதா ।
தேநாஸ்யேஹாऽதுலா கீர்திர்யஸஸ்தேஜஸ்ச வர்ததே ॥
mṛduṡca sthiracittaṡca sadā bhavyō'nasūyakaḥ ।
priyavādī ca bhūtānāṃ satyavādī ca rāghavaḥ ॥
bahuṡrutānāṃ vṛddhānāṃ brāhmaṇānāmupāsitā ।
tēnāsyēhā'tulā kīrtiryaṡastējaṡca vardhatē ॥
He is soft. His mind is stable.
He is tranquil and untroubled by envy.
This prince of Raghu dynasty advocates
only what is right as well as endearing to people.
He waits assiduously on Brāhmaṇas who are learned and matured.
his unparalleled name, fame and
the splendor of power are growing day by day.
Notice the phrase ‘right as well as endearing’. Whatever we do, should be right as well as endearing.
But, many a time, we see people leaning towards doing the ‘endearing’ thing, even though it is wrong. On the other hand, we also see people adamantly doing the right thing, even though it is not liked by anyone.
Finding out something that is both right and endearing, is an art. This combination is stressed upon in many books in many contexts in Indic literature, including Mahābhārata.
2.2.34
தேவாஸுரமநுஷ்யாணாம் ஸர்வாஸ்த்ரேஷு விஸாரத: ।
ஸம்யக்வித்யாவ்ரதஸ்நாதோ யதாவத்ஸாங்கவேதவித் ॥
dēvāsuramanuṣyāṇāṃ sarvāstrēṣu viṡāradaḥ ।
samyagvidyāvratasnātō yathāvatsāṅgavēdavit ॥
He is eloquent with all the Astras
known to humans, Dēvas as well as Asuras.
He is well graduated in studies and
learned all the Vedas and Vēdāngas.
Vēdas are four - Ṛg, Yajuh, Sāma and Adharva.
Vēdāngas are six - Ṡiksha, Vyākaraṇa, Chandas,
Nirukta, Jyōtishya and Kalpa.
2.2.35
காந்தர்வே ச புவி ஸ்ரேஷ்டோ பபூவ பரதாக்ரஜ: ।
கல்யாணாபிஜநஸ்ஸாதுரதீநாத்மா மஹாமதி: ॥
gāndharvē ca bhuvi ṡrēṣṭhō babhūva bharatāgrajaḥ ।
kalyāṇābhijanassādhuradīnātmā mahāmatiḥ ॥
This elder brother of Bharata
is the greatest exponent in music on this earth.
He is surrounded by good and well meaning people.
He is brilliant, good natured and never dispirited.
2.2.36-37a
த்விஜைரபிவிநீதஸ்ச ஸ்ரேஷ்டைர்தர்மார்தநைபுணை: ।
யதா வ்ரஜதி ஸங்க்ராமம் க்ராமார்தே நகரஸ்ய வா ॥
கத்வா ஸௌமித்ரிஸஹிதோ நாऽவிஜித்ய நிவர்ததே ।
dvijairabhivinītaṡca ṡrēṣṭhairdharmārthanaipuṇaiḥ ।
yadā vrajati saṅgrāmaṃ grāmārthē nagarasya vā ॥
gatvā saumitrisahitō nā'vijitya nivartatē ।
He has been well-instructed by Brāhmaṇas
who are experts in Dharma and Artha.
Never he, along with Lakshmaṇa, returned without
winning in a battle either over a city or a village.
2.2.37b-39a
ஸங்க்ராமாத்புநராகம்ய குஞ்ஜரேண ரதேந வா ।
பௌராந் ஸ்வஜநவந்நித்யம் குஸலம் பரிப்ருச்சதி ।
புத்ரேஷ்வக்நிஷு தாரேஷு ப்ரேஷ்யஸிஷ்யகணேஷு ச ।
நிகிலேநாநுபூர்வ்யாச்ச பிதாபுத்ராநிவௌரஸாந் ॥
saṅgrāmātpunarāgamya kuñjarēṇa rathēna vā ।
paurān svajanavannityaṃ kuṡalaṃ paripṛcchati ।
putrēṣvagniṣu dārēṣu prēṣyaṡiṣyagaṇēṣu ca ।
nikhilēnānupūrvyācca pitāputrānivaurasān ॥
Returning from the battles, on elephant or chariot,
he asks for the wellbeing of everyone in the city,
as if they are his own.
Like a father, he inquires about the wellbeing
of everyone all the time, including about their
children, wives, fire rituals, staff, Ṡishyas
and all others, one by one.
2.2.39b-40a
ஸுஸ்ரூஷந்தே ச வஸ்ஸிஷ்யா: கச்சித்கர்மஸு தம்ஸிதா: ।
இதி ந: புருஷவ்யாக்ர ஸ்ஸதா ராமோऽபிபாஷதே ॥
ṡuṡrūṣantē ca vaṡṡiṣyāḥ kaccitkarmasu daṃṡitāḥ ।
iti naḥ puruṣavyāghra ssadā rāmō'bhibhāṣatē ॥
The tiger among men, Rāma always enquires of us
“Are your Ṡishyas doing everything promptly?”
2.2.40b-41a
வ்யஸநேஷு மநுஷ்யாணாம் ப்ருஸம் பவதி து:கித: ।
உத்ஸவேஷு ச ஸர்வேஷு பிதேவ பரிதுஷ்யதி ॥
vyasanēṣu manuṣyāṇāṃ bhṛṡaṃ bhavati duḥkhitaḥ ।
utsavēṣu ca sarvēṣu pitēva parituṣyati ॥
He feels touched and sad when he sees people in trouble.
He feels happy like a father on festive occasions.
2.2.41b-42a
ஸத்யவாதீ மஹேஷ்வாஸோ வ்ருத்தஸேவீ ஜிதேந்த்ரிய:।
ஸ்மிதபூர்வாபிபாஷீ ச தர்மம் ஸர்வாத்மநா ஸ்ரித: ॥
satyavādī mahēṣvāsō vṛddhasēvī jitēndriyaḥ।
smitapūrvābhibhāṣī ca dharmaṃ sarvātmanā ṡritaḥ ॥
He is committed to truth. He is a great archer.
He respects elders. He has mastered senses.
He always leads conversations with a smile.
He cleaves to Dharma with the whole force of his being.
2.2.42b-43a
ஸம்யக்யோக்தா ஸ்ரேயஸாம் ச ந விக்ருஹ்ய கதாருசி: ।
உத்தரோத்தரயுக்தௌ ச வக்தா வாசஸ்பதிர்யதா ॥
samyagyōktā ṡrēyasāṃ ca na vigṛhya kathāruciḥ ।
uttarōttarayuktau ca vaktā vācaspatiryathā ॥
His focus is on doing good.
He is not interested in arguments.
But, in discussions, he knows
how to offer a counter point, like Vācaspati.
Vācaspati is another name for Bṛhaspati.
2.2.43b-44a
ஸுப்ரூராயததாம்ராக்ஷஸ்ஸாக்ஷாத்விஷ்ணுரிவ ஸ்வயம் ।
ராமோ லோகாபிராமோऽயம் ஸௌர்யவீர்யபராக்ரமை: ॥
subhrūrāyatatāmrākṣassākṣādviṣṇuriva svayam ।
rāmō lōkābhirāmō'yaṃ ṡauryavīryaparākramaiḥ ॥
With beautiful eyebrows and wide eyes tinged with red,
Rāma, the darling of the world,
is like Vishṇu Himself, in heroism, valor and bravery.
2.2.44b-45a
ப்ரஜாபாலநதத்த்வஜ்ஞோ ந ராகோபஹதேந்த்ரிய: ।
ஸக்தஸ்த்ரைலோக்யமப்யேகோ போக்தும் கிந்நு மஹீமிமாம் ॥
prajāpālanatattvajñō na rāgōpahatēndriyaḥ ।
ṡaktastrailōkyamapyēkō bhōktuṃ kinnu mahīmimām ॥
He knows the in and out of governing people.
His senses are not numbed by indulgence.
He is capable of enjoying all the three worlds, all by himself.
What to say of just this earth!
2.2.45b-46
நாஸ்ய க்ரோத: ப்ரஸாதஸ்ச நிரர்தோऽஸ்தி கதாசந ।
ஹந்த்யேவ நியமாத்வத்யாநவத்யே ந ச குப்யதி ॥
யுநக்த்யர்தை: ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டஸ்ச தமஸௌ யத்ர துஷ்யதி ।
nāsya krōdhaḥ prasādaṡca nirarthō'sti kadācana ।
hantyēva niyamādvadhyānavadhyē na ca kupyati ॥
yunaktyarthaiḥ prahṛṣṭaṡca tamasau yatra tuṣyati ।
Neither his anger, nor his favor is ever in vain.
He strikes the guilty as duty demands.
He never even raises an eyebrow on the innocent.
He shows his largesse happily,
with whomever he is pleased.
2.2.47
ஸாந்தைஸ்ஸர்வப்ரஜாகாந்தை: ப்ரீதிஸஞ்ஜநநைர்ந்ருணாம் ॥
குணைர்விருருசே ராமோ தீப்தஸ்ஸூர்ய இவாம்ஸுபி: ॥
ṡāntaissarvaprajākāntaiḥ prītisañjananairnṛṇām ॥
guṇairvirurucē rāmō dīptassūrya ivāṃṡubhiḥ ॥
With his poise, charisma and qualities
that are endearing to all the peoples
Rāma is shining like the sun
who is shining with the spread of his rays!
2.2.48
தமேவம்குணஸம்பந்நம் ராமம் ஸத்யபராக்ரமம் ।
லோகபாலோபமம் நாதமகாமயத மேதிநீ ॥
tamēvaṃguṇasampannaṃ rāmaṃ satyaparākramam ।
lōkapālōpamaṃ nāthamakāmayata mēdinī ॥
The earth longs for such Rāma as lord,
who is endowed with all those great qualities
and who is truly valorous and
no less than the Lōka Pālakas!
2.2.49
வத்ஸஸ்ஸ்ரேயஸி ஜாதஸ்தே திஷ்ட்யாऽஸௌ தவ ராகவ ।
திஷ்ட்யா புத்ரகுணைர்யுக்தோ மாரீச இவ காஸ்யப: ॥
vatsaṡṡrēyasi jātastē diṣṭyā'sau tava rāghava ।
diṣṭyā putraguṇairyuktō mārīca iva kāṡyapaḥ ॥
O descendent of Raghu! By your good fortune
he was born as your son to bring all goodness to you!
Just as Marīca was with Kaṡyapa, you are blessed with him,
who bears every quality that is desired in a son!
2.2.50-51
பலமாரோக்யமாயுஸ்ச ராமஸ்ய விதிதாத்மந: ।
தேவாஸுரமநுஷ்யேஷு ஸகந்தர்வோரகேஷு ச ॥
ஆஸம்ஸதே ஜநஸ்ஸர்வோ ராஷ்ட்ரே புரவரே ததா ।
ஆப்யந்தரஸ்ச பாஹ்யஸ்ச பௌரஜாநபதோ ஜந: ॥
balamārōgyamāyuṡca rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ।
dēvāsuramanuṣyēṣu sagandharvōragēṣu ca ॥
āṡaṃsatē janassarvō rāṣṭrē puravarē tathā ।
ābhyantaraṡca bāhyaṡca paurajānapadō janaḥ ॥
People from the cities and the countryside, and
people from very near and very far are wishing
strength, good health and long life to Rāma,
who is renowned for his character
not only among Dēvas, Humans and Rākshasas
but also among Gandharvas and Uragas.
2.2.52
ஸ்த்ரியோ வ்ருத்தாஸ்தருண்யஸ்ச ஸாயம் ப்ராதஸ்ஸமாஹிதா: ।
ஸர்வாந் தேவாந் நமஸ்யந்தி ராமஸ்யார்தே யஸஸ்விந: ॥
striyō vṛddhāstaruṇyaṡca sāyaṃ prātassamāhitāḥ ।
sarvān dēvān namasyanti rāmasyārthē yaṡasvinaḥ ॥
Young and old, as well as women
are praying to all the Dēvas
in the mornings and the evenings for
the welfare of the Rāma, the widely admired!
2.2.53
தேஷாமாயாசிதம் தேவ! த்வத்ப்ரஸாதாத்ஸம்ருத்த்யதாம் ।
ராமமிந்தீவரஸ்யாமம் ஸர்வஸத்ருநிபர்ஹணம் ॥
பஸ்யாமோ யௌவராஜ்யஸ்தம் தவ ராஜோத்தமாऽऽத்மஜம் ॥
tēṣāmāyācitaṃ dēva! tvatprasādātsamṛddhyatām ।
rāmamindīvaraṡyāmaṃ sarvaṡatrunibarhaṇam ॥
paṡyāmō yauvarājyasthaṃ tava rājōttamā''tmajam ॥
O lord! O best among the kings !
May their wish be fulfilled by your grace!
May we see Rāma, your son,
the annihilator of the all the foes,
who is dark like the pleasing moon lily
as the crown prince.
2.2.54
தம் தேவ தேவோபமமாத்மஜம் தே
ஸர்வஸ்ய லோகஸ்ய ஹிதே நிவிஷ்டம் ।
ஹிதாய ந: க்ஷிப்ரமுதாரஜுஷ்டம்
முதாऽபஷேக்தும் வரத! த்வமர்ஹஸி ॥
taṃ dēva dēvōpamamātmajaṃ tē
sarvasya lōkasya hitē niviṣṭam ।
hitāya naḥ kṣipramudārajuṣṭaṃ
mudā'bhaṣēktuṃ varada! tvamarhasi ॥
O grantor of wishes!
For the sake of all of us, may you be pleased to
consecrate your noble son at once,
who is comparable to the lord of Dēvas,
endowed with all the great qualities,
and interested in the welfare of the entire world!
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்விதீயஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvitīyassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the second Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
