Baala Kaanda - Sarga 75
In this Sarga, Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, speaking directly to Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha, narrates the history of the bows of Vishṇu and Ṡiva, and how he got them, and about the murder of his father which enraged him and made him kill all the Kshatriyas. Then he challenges him to mount an arrow on the bow of Vishṇu. He promises Rāma the pleasure of a duel with him as a reward.
1.75.1
ராம! தாஸரதே! ராம! வீர்யம் தே ஸ்ரூயதேऽத்புதம் ।
தநுஷோ பேதநம் சைவ நிகிலேந மயா ஸ்ருதம் ॥
rāma! dāṡarathē! rāma! vīryaṃ tē ṡrūyatē'dbhutam ।
dhanuṣō bhēdanaṃ caiva nikhilēna mayā ṡrutam ॥
O Rāma! Valiant son of Daṡaratha!
People speak of your marvelous strength.
I have heard all about your breaking of the bow!
1.75.2
ததத்புதமசிந்த்யம் ச பேதநம் தநுஷஸ்த்வயா ।
தச்ச்ருத்வாऽஹமநுப்ராப்தோ தநுர்க்ருஹ்யாபரம் ஸுபம் ॥
tadadbhutamacintyaṃ ca bhēdanaṃ dhanuṣastvayā ।
tacchrutvā'hamanuprāptō dhanurgṛhyāparaṃ ṡubham ॥
That you have broken that bow
is truly unbelievable and astonishing.
Hearing that, I have come here
with another superb and auspicious bow.
1.75.3
ததிதம் கோரஸங்காஸம் ஜாமதக்ந்யம் மஹத்தநு: ।
பூரயஸ்வ ஸரேணைவ ஸ்வபலம் தர்ஸயஸ்வ ச ॥
tadidaṃ ghōrasaṅkāṡaṃ jāmadagnyaṃ mahaddhanu: ।
pūrayasva ṡarēṇaiva svabalaṃ darṡayasva ca ॥
This mighty and dreadful bow comes from Jamadagni.
May you show your prowess by drawing an arrow on this!
1.75.4
ததஹம் தே பலம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தநுஷோऽஸ்ய ப்ரபூரணே ।
த்வந்த்வயுத்தம் ப்ரதாஸ்யாமி வீர்யஸ்லாக்யஸ்ய ராகவ ॥
tadahaṃ tē balaṃ dṛṣṭvā dhanuṣō'sya prapūraṇē ।
dvandvayuddhaṃ pradāsyāmi vīryaṡlāghyasya rāghava ॥
O Rāma! If you can show me your strength
by mounting an arrow on this bow,
I shall grant you the pleasure of having a duel with me
which men of strength hold in high esteem!
1.75.5
தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜா தஸரதஸ்ததா ।
விஷண்ணவதநோ தீந: ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā rājā daṡarathastadā ।
viṣaṇṇavadanō dīna: prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ॥
King Daṡaratha, thereupon prayed humbly
with folded hands and a grief stricken face:
1.75.6
க்ஷத்ரரோஷாத்ப்ரஸாந்தஸ்த்வம் ப்ராஹ்மணஸ்ச மஹாயஸா: ।
பாலாநாம் மம புத்ராணாமபயம் தாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
kṣatrarōṣātpraṡāntastvaṃ brāhmaṇaṡca mahāyaṡā: ।
bālānāṃ mama putrāṇāmabhayaṃ dātumarhasi ॥
O celebrated one! O Brāhmaṇa!
You had verily become tranquil and pacified,
after putting behind you, your indignation upon the Kshatriyas.
May you assure my sons, the young lads, protection!
1.75.7
பார்கவாணாம் குலே ஜாத: ஸ்வாத்யாயவ்ரதஸாலிநாம் ।
ஸஹாஸ்ராக்ஷே ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாய ஸஸ்த்ரம் நிக்ஷிப்தவாநஸி ॥
bhārgavāṇāṃ kulē jāta: svādhyāyavrataṡālinām ।
sahāsrākṣē pratijñāya ṡastraṃ nikṣiptavānasi ॥
You are born into the lineage of Bhṛgu
That has been consistently devoted to their studies!
Have you not taken a vow witnessed by the thousand-eyed Indra
to renounce the use of arms!
1.75.7
ஸ த்வம் தர்மபரோ பூத்வா காஸ்யபாய வஸுந்தராம் ।
தத்த்வா வநமுபாகம்ய மஹேந்த்ரக்ருதகேதந: ॥
sa tvaṃ dharmaparō bhūtvā kāṡyapāya vasundharām ।
dattvā vanamupāgamya mahēndrakṛtakētana: ॥
And giving yourself up wholly for Dharma and
giving away the entire land to Kāṡyapa,
have you not left for the Vanas and made
Mahēndra mountain your home?!
1.75.9
மம ஸர்வவிநாஸாய ஸம்ப்ராப்தஸ்த்வம் மஹாமுநே ।
ந சைகஸ்மிந் ஹதே ராமே ஸர்வே ஜீவாமஹே வயம் ॥
mama sarvavināṡāya samprāptastvaṃ mahāmunē ।
na caikasmin hatē rāmē sarvē jīvāmahē vayam ॥
And here you come, O Mahā Muni, for my utter ruin!
None of us would be able to stay alive if Rāma is killed!
1.75.10
ப்ருவத்யேவம் தஸரதே ஜாமதக்ந்ய: ப்ரதாபவாந் ।
அநாத்ருத்யைவ தத்வாக்யம் ராமமேவாப்யபாஷத ॥
bruvatyēvaṃ daṡarathē jāmadagnya: pratāpavān ।
anādṛtyaiva tadvākyaṃ rāmamēvābhyabhāṣata ॥
The valiant son of Jamadagni simply ignored everything
that Daṡaratha said and continued addressing Rāma alone:
1.75.11
இமே த்வே தநுஷீ ஸ்ரேஷ்டே திவ்யே லோகாபிவிஸ்ருதே ।
த்ருடே பலவதீ முக்யே ஸுக்ருதே விஸ்வகர்மணா ॥
imē dvē dhanuṣī ṡrēṣṭhē divyē lōkābhiviṡrutē ।
dṛḍhē balavatī mukhyē sukṛtē viṡvakarmaṇā ॥
Both of these excellent, tough, strong and
renowned bows are of divine origin.
They were specially made by Viṡwakarma.
Viṡwakarma is the chief architect, engineer and builder of the Dēvas.
1.75.12
அதிஸ்ருஷ்டம் ஸுரைரேகம் த்ர்யம்பகாய யுயுத்ஸவே ।
த்ரிபுரக்நம் நரஸ்ரேஷ்ட! பக்நம் காகுத்ஸ்த! யத்த்வயா ॥
atisṛṣṭaṃ surairēkaṃ tryambakāya yuyutsavē ।
tripuraghnaṃ naraṡrēṣṭha! bhagnaṃ kākutstha! yattvayā ॥
O prince of Kākutstha lineage! O best among men!
The bow broken by you is one of those two.
It was given to the three-eyed (Lord Ṡiva) by the Dēvas
when he was ready to destroy Tripura!
Tripura refers to the three mobile cities
built by Maya using gold, silver and bronze respectively,
for three Rākshasas by names
Tārakāsura, Kamalāksha and Vidyunmāli.
1.75.13
இதம் த்விதீயம் துர்தர்ஷம் விஷ்ணோர்தத்தம் ஸுரோத்தமை: ।
ததிதம் வைஷ்ணவம் ராம! தநு: பரமபாஸ்வரம் ।
ஸமாநஸாரம் காகுத்ஸ்த! ரௌத்ரேண தநுஷா த்விதம் ॥
idaṃ dvitīyaṃ durdharṣaṃ viṣṇōrdattaṃ surōttamai: ।
tadidaṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ rāma! dhanu: paramabhāsvaram ।
samānasāraṃ kākutstha! raudrēṇa dhanuṣā tvidam ॥
This, the second, the invincible, was given
by the eminent Dēvas to Vishṇu.
O Rāma! O prince of Kākutstha lineage!
This glowing, radiant bow of Vishṇu is
of the same caliber as that bow of Rudra!
Rudra is another name for Ṡiva.
1.75.14
ததா து தேவதாஸ்ஸர்வா: ப்ருச்சந்தி ஸ்ம பிதாமஹம் ।
ஸிதிகண்டஸ்ய விஷ்ணோஸ்ச பலாபலநிரீக்ஷயா ॥
tadā tu dēvatāssarvā: pṛcchanti sma pitāmaham ।
ṡitikaṇṭhasya viṣṇōṡca balābalanirīkṣayā ॥
Then the Dēvas, out of curiosity, asked the Progenitor (Brahma)
about the relative strength of Ṡitikaṇṭha (Ṡiva) and Vishṇu!
1.75.15
அபிப்ராயம் து விஜ்ஞாய தேவதாநாம் பிதாமஹ: ।
விரோதம் ஜநயாமாஸ தயோ ஸ்ஸத்யவதாம் வர: ॥
abhiprāyaṃ tu vijñāya dēvatānāṃ pitāmaha: ।
virōdhaṃ janayāmāsa tayō ssatyavatāṃ vara: ॥
The progenitor, assessing exactly what
the Dēvas were asking and
interested in nothing but the truth,
created animosity between the two.
Brahma did not want to give his opinion. Rather he wanted the facts to speak for themselves.
1.75.16
விரோதே ச மஹத்யுத்தமபவத்ரோமஹர்ஷணம் ।
ஸிதிகண்டஸ்ய விஷ்ணோஸ்ச பரஸ்பரஜிகீஷுணோ: ॥
virōdhē ca mahadyuddhamabhavadrōmaharṣaṇam ।
ṡitikaṇṭhasya viṣṇōṡca parasparajigīṣuṇō: ॥
Animosity then took over both Ṡitikaṇṭha and Vishṇu.
Bent on winning over each other,
they fought a great battle, that made
one's hair stand on end.
1.75.17
ததா து ஜ்ரும்பிதம் ஸைவம் தநுர்பீமபராக்ரமம் ।
ஹுங்காரேண மஹாதேவ ஸ்தம்பிதோऽத த்ரிலோசந: ॥
tadā tu jṛmbhitaṃ ṡaivaṃ dhanurbhīmaparākramam ।
huṅkārēṇa mahādēva stambhitō'tha trilōcana: ॥
Then the extremely strong and invincible bow of Ṡiva,
the three eyed Mahā Dēva, was rendered immobile by a snort from Vishṇu!
1.75.18
தேவைஸ்ததா ஸமாகம்ய ஸர்ஷிஸகை ஸ்ஸசாரணை: ।
யாசிதௌ ப்ரஸமம் தத்ர ஜக்மதுஸ்தௌ ஸுரோத்தமௌ ॥
dēvaistadā samāgamya sarṣisaghai ssacāraṇai: ।
yācitau praṡamaṃ tatra jagmatustau surōttamau ॥
Then, entreated by the assembled Dēvas,
along with hosts of Ṛshis and Cāraṇas
both of those supreme Dēvas were pacified.
1.75.19
ஜ்ரும்பிதம் தத்தநுர்த்ர்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸைவம் விஷ்ணுபராக்ரமை: ।
அதிகம் மேநிரே விஷ்ணும் தேவா ஸ்ஸர்ஷிகணாஸ்ததா ॥
jṛmbhitaṃ taddhanurdrṛṣṭvā ṡaivaṃ viṣṇuparākramai: ।
adhikaṃ mēnirē viṣṇuṃ dēvā ssarṣigaṇāstadā ॥
Seeing that bow of Ṡiva made powerless by
the prowess of Vishṇu, the hosts of Dēvas and Ṛshis
considered Vishṇu to be superior.
1.75.20
தநூ ருத்ரஸ்து ஸங்க்ருத்தோ விதேஹேஷு மஹாயஸா: ।
தேவராதஸ்ய ராஜர்ஷேர்ததௌ ஹஸ்தே ஸஸாயகம் ॥
dhanū rudrastu saṅkṛddhō vidēhēṣu mahāyaṡā: ।
dēvarātasya rājarṣērdadau hastē sasāyakam ॥
The renowned Rudra who was greatly angered, then
resigned that bow and the arrows to the hands of
Rājarshi Dēvarāta of Vidēha.
1.75.21
இதம் ச வைஷ்ணவம் ராம! தநு: பரபுரஞ்ஜயம் ।
ருசீகே பார்கவே ப்ராதாத்விஷ்ணு: ஸ ந்யாஸமுத்தமம் ॥
idaṃ ca vaiṣṇavaṃ rāma! dhanu: parapurañjayam ।
ṛcīkē bhārgavē prādādviṣṇu: sa nyāsamuttamam ॥
O! Rāma, Vishṇu gave this bow
which is capable of conquering hostile cities,
to the trust of Ṛiceeka of the lineage of Bhṛgu.
1.75.22
ருசீகஸ்து மஹாதேஜா: புத்ரஸ்யாப்ரதிகர்மண: ।
பிதுர்மம ததௌ திவ்யம் ஜமதக்நேர்மஹாத்மந: ॥
ṛcīkastu mahātējā: putrasyāpratikarmaṇa: ।
piturmama dadau divyaṃ jamadagnērmahātmana: ॥
The supremely radiant Ṛiceeka gave this bow to his son,
my father, the highly accomplished Mahātma, Jamadagni.
1.75.23
ந்யஸ்தஸஸ்த்ரே பிதரி மே தபோபலஸமந்விதே ।
அர்ஜுநோ விததே ம்ருத்யும் ப்ராக்ருதாம் புத்திமாஸ்தித: ॥
nyastaṡastrē pitari mē tapōbalasamanvitē ।
arjunō vidadhē mṛtyuṃ prākṛtāṃ buddhimāsthita: ॥
When my father, endowed with the energy of Tapa,
had given up the use of weapons,
Arjuna, prompted by mean motives,
inflicted death upon him.
Arjuna here refers to Kārtaveeryārjuna.
1.75.24-25
வதமப்ரதிரூபம் து பிது ஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா ஸுதாருணம் ।
க்ஷத்ரமுத்ஸாதயந்ரோஷாஜ்ஜாதம் ஜாதமநேகஸ: ।
ப்ருதிவீம் சாகிலாம் ப்ராப்ய காஸ்யபாய மஹாத்மநே ।
யஜ்ஞஸ்யாந்தே ததா ராம தக்ஷிணாம் புண்யகர்மணே ।
தத்த்வா மஹேந்த்ரநிலயஸ்தபோபலஸமந்வித: ॥
vadhamapratirūpaṃ tu pitu ṡṡṛtvā sudāruṇam ।
kṣatramutsādayanrōṣājjātaṃ jātamanēkaṡa: ।
pṛthivīṃ cākhilāṃ prāpya kāṡyapāya mahātmanē ।
yajñasyāntē tadā rāma dakṣiṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇē ।
dattvā mahēndranilayastapōbalasamanvita: ॥
Upon hearing about this extremely
ruthless slaying of my father, I, in my wrath,
extirpated the Kshatriya clan again and again,
every time it took new roots.
In the end I conferred the entire land
which I gained thus, on Mahātma Kāṡyapa
who has done many Puṇya Karmas.
Thereafter, endowed with the energy of Tapa,
I have been living on mount Mahēndra.
1.75.26
அத்யதூத்தமவீர்யேண த்வயா ராம மஹாபல ।
ஸ்ருதவாந் தநுஷோ பேதம் ததோऽஹம் த்ருதமாகத: ॥
adyatūttamavīryēṇa tvayā rāma mahābala ।
ṡrutavān dhanuṣō bhēdaṃ tatō'haṃ drutamāgata: ॥
O! Mighty strong Rāma! I rushed here upon hearing
about the breaking of the bow by your excellent prowess.
1.75.27
ததிதம் வைஷ்ணவம் ராம! பித்ருபைதாமஹம் மஹத் ।
க்ஷத்ரதர்மம் புரஸ்க்ருத்ய க்ருஹ்ணீஷ்வ தநுருத்தமம் ॥
MEANIN
O! Rma, in adherence to Kshatriya Dharma,
take this excellent bow of Vishu
inherited by me from my father and forefathers!
tadidaṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ rāma! pitṛpaitāmahaṃ mahat ।
kṣatradharmaṃ puraskṛtya gṛhṇīṣva dhanuruttamam ॥
MEANIN
O! Rāma, in adherence to Kshatriya Dharma,
take this excellent bow of Vish u
inherited by me from my father and forefathers!
1.75.28
யோஜயஸ்வ தநுஸ்ஸ்ரேஷ்டே ஸரம் பரபுரஞ்ஜயம் ।
யதி ஸக்நோஷி காகுத்ஸ்த! த்வந்த்வம் தாஸ்யாமி தே தத: ॥
yōjayasva dhanuṡṡrēṣṭhē ṡaraṃ parapurañjayam ।
yadi ṡaknōṣi kākutstha! dvandvaṃ dāsyāmi tē tata: ॥
Try mounting the arrow on this
best of bows that can conquer entire cities!
O descendant of Kākutstha, Rāma!
If you are able to do that, I will
grant you the pleasure of a duel with me!
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
பாலகாண்டே பஞ்சஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
bālakāṇḍē pañcasaptatitamassarga: ॥
Thus concludes the seventy fifth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 2186 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
