Baala Kaanda - Sarga 68
In this Sarga, the envoys of Janaka reach Ayōdhyā and convey king Janaka’s message to king Daṡaratha, about his desire to give Seetā in marriage to Rāma. Daṡaratha gets exhilarated at the news and consults with his Gurus and ministers about the proposal from Janaka. All of them respond in positive and the decision to go to Mithilā is made.
1.68.1 ஜநகேந ஸமாதிஷ்டா தூதாஸ்தே க்லாந்தவாஹநா: ।
த்ரிராத்ரமுஷிதா மார்கே தேऽயோத்யாம் ப்ராவிஸந் புரீம் ॥
janakēna samādiṣṭā dūtāstē klāntavāhanāḥ ।
trirātramuṣitā mārgē tē'yōdhyāṃ prāviṡan purīm ॥
The envoys, thus ordered by Janaka, reached Ayōdhyā
after travelling for three days, resting only at night,
their horses completely exhausted.
1.68.2 ராஜ்ஞோ பவநமாஸாத்ய த்வாரஸ்தாநிதமப்ருவந் ।
ஸீக்ரம் நிவேத்யதாம் ராஜ்ஞே தூதாந்நோ ஜநகஸ்ய ச ॥
rājñō bhavanamāsādya dvārasthānidamabruvan ।
ṡīghraṃ nivēdyatāṃ rājñē dūtānnō janakasya ca ॥
After reaching the king's palace,
they said to the guards at the gate:
"May you go immediately and tell the king
that the envoys of Janaka are here!"
1.68.3-4a இத்யுக்தா த்வாரபாலாஸ்தே ராகவாயந்யவேதயந் ।
தே ராஜவசநாத்தூதா ராஜவேஸ்ம ப்ரவேஸிதா: ।
தத்ருஸுர்தேவஸங்காஸம் வ்ருத்தம் தஸரதம் ந்ருபம் ॥
ityuktā dvārapālāstē rāghavāyanyavēdayan ।
tē rājavacanāddūtā rājavēṡma pravēṡitāḥ ।
dadṛṡurdēvasaṅkāṡaṃ vṛddhaṃ daṡarathaṃ nṛpam ॥
The gate guards immediately relayed the news to
the king of Raghu dynasty (Daṡaratha).
At the word of the king, the envoys
entered the king’s palace and saw the
aged and venerable king Daṡaratha, who was like a Dēva.
1.68.4b-5a பத்தாஞ்ஜலிபுடா: ஸர்வே தூதா விகதஸாத்வஸா: ।
ராஜாநம் ப்ரயதா வாக்யமப்ருவந் மதுராக்ஷரம் ॥
baddhāñjalipuṭāḥ sarvē dūtā vigatasādhvasāḥ ।
rājānaṃ prayatā vākyamabruvan madhurākṣaram ॥
With folded hands, relieved of fear,
all the envoys told these sweet words
to the king, with all the modesty:
1.68.5b-7a மைதிலோ ஜநகோ ராஜா ஸாக்நிஹோத்ரபுரஸ்க்ருதம் ।
குஸலம் சாவ்யயம் சைவ ஸோபாத்யாயபுரோஹிதம் ॥
முஹுர்முஹுர்மதுரயா ஸ்நேஹஸம்யுக்தயா கிரா ।
ஜநகஸ்த்வாம் மஹாராஜா ப்ருச்சதே ஸபுர:ஸரம் ॥
maithilō janakō rājā sāgnihōtrapuraskṛtam ।
kuṡalaṃ cāvyayaṃ caiva sōpādhyāyapurōhitam ॥
muhurmuhurmadhurayā snēhasaṃyuktayā girā ।
janakastvāṃ mahārājā pṛcchatē sapuraḥsaram ॥
O great king! Janaka, the king of Mithilā,
in the most friendliest and dulcet words possible,
would like to enquire about your wellbeing and prosperity,
surrounded by the Purōhitas, Gurus and
always led by contingents of staff and army,
and known for the performance of pristine fire rituals.
1.68.7b-8a ப்ருஷ்ட்வா குஸலமவ்யக்ரம் வைதேஹோ மிதிலாதிப: ।
கௌஸிகாநுமதே வாக்யம் பவந்தமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
pṛṣṭvā kuṡalamavyagraṃ vaidēhō mithilādhipaḥ ।
kauṡikānumatē vākyaṃ bhavantamidamabravīt ॥
The king of the city of Mithilā and state of Vidēha,
after enquiring about your well-being,
with all honesty and due respect
and with the assent of the son of
Kuṡika (Viṡwāmitra) would like to say:
1.68.8b-9a பூர்வம் ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா விதிதா வீர்யஸுல்கா மமாத்மஜா ।
ராஜாநஸ்ச க்ருதாமர்ஷா நிர்வீர்யா விமுகீக்ருதா: ॥
pūrvaṃ pratijñā viditā vīryaṡulkā mamātmajā ।
rājānaṡca kṛtāmarṣā nirvīryā vimukhīkṛtāḥ ॥
I had made it well known that my daughter
can be claimed only by a valiant hero.
Kings who resented and felt bitter about it,
were defeated and turned away.
1.68.9b-10a ஸேயம் மம ஸுதா ராஜந் விஸ்வாமித்ரபுரஸ்ஸரை: ।
யத்ருச்சயாகதைர்வீரைர்நிர்ஜிதா தவ புத்ரகை: ॥
sēyaṃ mama sutā rājan viṡvāmitrapurassaraiḥ ।
yadṛcchayāgatairvīrairnirjitā tava putrakaiḥ ॥
O king! Your heroic son has now claimed my daughter
having arrived here by chance, led by Viṡwāmitra.
1.68.10b-11a தச்ச ராஜந் தநுர்திவ்யம் மத்யே பக்நம் மஹாத்மநா ।
ராமேண ஹி மஹாராஜ மஹத்யாம் ஜநஸம்ஸதி ॥
tacca rājan dhanurdivyaṃ madhyē bhagnaṃ mahātmanā ।
rāmēṇa hi mahārāja mahatyāṃ janasaṃsadi ॥
O king among great kings! That great bow
was broken in the middle by Mahātma Rāma
in front of a gathering of many great people.
1.68.11b-12a அஸ்மை தேயா மயா ஸீதா வீர்யஸுல்கா மஹாத்மநே ।
ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாம் கர்துமிச்சாமி ததநுஜ்ஞாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
asmai dēyā mayā sītā vīryaṡulkā mahātmanē ।
pratijñāṃ kartumicchāmi tadanujñātumarhasi ॥
My daughter, a valorous man’s prize,
should hence be given to this Mahātma (Rāma).
So would I like to vow and
pronounce with your kind permission.
1.68.12b-13a ஸோபாத்யாயோ மஹாராஜ புரோஹிதபுரஸ்ஸர: ।
ஸீக்ரமாகச்ச பத்ரம் தே த்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹஸி ராகவௌ ॥
sōpādhyāyō mahārāja purōhitapurassaraḥ ।
ṡīghramāgaccha bhadraṃ tē draṣṭumarhasi rāghavau ॥
O great king! May you come here without any delay
along with your Purōhitas and Gurus
to see the duo of princes of Raghu dynasty!
1.68.13b-14a ப்ரீதிம் ச மம ராஜேந்த்ர நிர்வர்தயிதுமர்ஹஸி ।
புத்ரயோருபயோரேவ ப்ரீதிம் த்வமபி லப்ஸ்யஸே ॥
prītiṃ ca mama rājēndra nirvartayitumarhasi ।
putrayōrubhayōrēva prītiṃ tvamapi lapsyasē ॥
O lord of kings! May you oblige and make me happy!
May you also have the joy of seeing both your sons!
1.68.14b-15 ஏவம் விதேஹாதிபதிர்மதுரம் வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
விஸ்வாமித்ராப்யநுஜ்ஞாத: ஸதாநந்தமதே ஸ்தித: ।
இத்யுக்த்வா விரதா தூதா ராஜகௌரவ ஸங்கிதா: ॥
ēvaṃ vidēhādhipatirmadhuraṃ vākyamabravīt ।
viṡvāmitrābhyanujñātaḥ ṡatānandamatē sthitaḥ ।
ityuktvā viratā dūtā rājagaurava ṡaṅkitāḥ ॥
"These are the friendly words of the king of Vidēha,
spoken with full support of Ṡatānanda and
with full permission of Viṡwāmitra"
concluded the envoys and waited for
the response of the venerable king.
1.68.16 தூதவாக்யம் து தச்ச்ருத்வா ராஜா பரமஹர்ஷித: ।
வஸிஷ்டம் வாமதேவம் ச மந்த்ரிணோऽந்யாம்ஸ்ச ஸோऽப்ரவீத் ॥
dūtavākyaṃ tu tacchrutvā rājā paramaharṣitaḥ ।
vasiṣṭhaṃ vāmadēvaṃ ca mantriṇō'nyāṃṡca sō'bravīt ॥
The king was extremely joyous
hearing those words of the envoys.
Then, addressing Vasishṭha, Vāmadēva,
and other ministers, he said:
1.68.17 குப்த: குஸிகபுத்ரேண கௌஸல்யாநந்தவர்த்தந: ।
லக்ஷ்மணேந ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா விதேஹேஷு வஸத்யஸௌ ॥
guptaḥ kuṡikaputrēṇa kausalyānandavarddhanaḥ ।
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā vidēhēṣu vasatyasau ॥
Under the able guardianship of the
son of Kuṡika (Viṡwāmitra),
the joy of Kousalya (Rāma)
along with brother Lakshmaṇa,
is now in the country of Vidēha. Overwhelmed by joy, Daṡaratha could not say how proud he was of Rāma. Hence he refers to him as the son of Kousalya, prince of Kākutstha lineage and prince of Raghu dynasty, but not as 'my son'!
1.68.18 த்ருஷ்டவீர்யஸ்து காகுத்ஸ்தோ ஜநகேந மஹாத்மநா ।
ஸம்ப்ரதாநம் ஸுதாயாஸ்து ராகவே கர்த்துமிச்சதி ॥
dṛṣṭavīryastu kākutsthō janakēna mahātmanā ।
sampradānaṃ sutāyāstu rāghavē karttumicchati ॥
Mahātma Janaka, having witnessed the valor
of the prince of Kākutstha lineage,
would like to give her daughter's hand
in marriage to the prince of Raghu dynasty.
1.68.19 யதி வோ ரோசதே வ்ருத்தம் ஜநகஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
புரீம் கச்சாமஹே ஸீக்ரம் மாபூத்காலஸ்ய பர்யய: ॥
yadi vō rōcatē vṛttaṃ janakasya mahātmanaḥ ।
purīṃ gacchāmahē ṡīghraṃ mābhūtkālasya paryayaḥ ॥
If all of you are positive about
the proposal and background of Mahātma Janaka
we shall go to his city immediately,
without losing any time! A king would not act on his own, without proper consultation of the Gurus and top officials even in matters concerning his son's marriage.
In the current days of atomic families and individualistic mores, we have lost the sense of involving others appropriately in matters of our concern and participating appropriately in matters of others' concern.
The instinctual makeup of human species is, obviously, to live collectively. But we are increasingly becoming detached from each other in matters that matter most.
We are increasingly getting isolated from each other. We are surrounded by formalities. We are buffered by gadgets. We are wearing the armor of individualism. We are being cooked within. We are becoming stressed. There is no one to hear the murmurs of our hearts. There is no heart close enough to rhyme with ours.
Such is the life we have been building of late, fast and furious, in the name of progress.
1.68.20 மந்த்ரிணோ பாடமித்யாஹு: ஸஹ ஸர்வைர்மஹர்ஷிபி: ।
ஸுப்ரீதஸ்சாப்ரவீத்ராஜா ஸ்வோ யாத்ரேதி ஸ மந்த்ரிண: ॥
mantriṇō bāḍhamityāhuḥ saha sarvairmaharṣibhiḥ ।
suprītaṡcābravīdrājā ṡvō yātrēti sa mantriṇaḥ ॥
The ministers along with all the Maharshis said "Yes!".
The king felt happy and said to the ministers
to get ready for the journey on the next day.
1.68.21 மந்த்ரிணஸ்தாம் நரேந்த்ரஸ்ய ராத்ரிம் பரமஸத்க்ருதா: ।
ஊஷுஸ்தே முதிதா: ஸர்வே குணை: ஸர்வைஸ்ஸமந்விதா: ॥
mantriṇastāṃ narēndrasya rātriṃ paramasatkṛtāḥ ।
ūṣustē muditāḥ sarvē guṇaiḥ sarvaissamanvitāḥ ॥
The respectable and virtuous envoys were honored
and stayed back for the night.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே அஷ்டஷஷ்டிதம: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē aṣṭaṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the sixty eighth Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
We completed reading 1980 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
