Baala Kaanda - Sarga 67
In this Sarga, Viṡwāmitra requests Janaka to show the bow to Rāma. Fifty thousand strong men drag the chest that contain the bow, to show it to Rāma.
With the permission of Viṡwāmitra and Janaka, Rāma lifts the bow, ties the string and draws it. The bow then breaks into two pieces.
Janakan, as promised, makes the preparations to give Seetā to Rāma in matrimony. He sends his people to convey the good news to Daṡaratha and bring him to Mithilā.
This Sarga narrates one of the most celebrated legendary stories of India. It is hard not to have goose bumps as one reads through this Sarga.
1.67.1 ஜநகஸ்ய வச: ஸ்ருத்வா விஸ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி: ।
தநுர்தர்ஸய ராமாய இதி ஹோவாச பார்திவம் ॥
janakasya vacaḥ ṡrutvā viṡvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ ।
dhanurdarṡaya rāmāya iti hōvāca pārthivam ॥
Hearing those words of Janaka,
The Mahā Muni Viṡwāmitra said to the king:
"OK. Please show the bow to Rāma!"
1.67.2 தத: ஸ ராஜா ஜநக: ஸாமந்தாந் வ்யாதிதேஸ ஹ ।
தநுராநீயதாம் திவ்யம் கந்தமால்யவிபூஷிதம் ॥
tataḥ sa rājā janakaḥ sāmantān vyādidēṡa ha ।
dhanurānīyatāṃ divyaṃ gandhamālyavibhūṣitam ॥
Then the king Janaka directed his
subordinates to bring the divine bow,
decorated with flowers and fragrances.
1.67.3 ஜநகேந ஸமாதிஷ்டா: ஸசிவா: ப்ராவிஸந் புரீம் ।
தத்தநு: புரத: க்ருத்வா நிர்ஜக்மு: பார்திவாஜ்ஞயா ॥
janakēna samādiṣṭāḥ sacivāḥ prāviṡan purīm ।
taddhanuḥ purataḥ kṛtvā nirjagmuḥ pārthivājñayā ॥
With those orders from Janaka,
his ministers went to the city and
returned with the bow ahead of them.
1.67.4 ந்ருணாம் ஸதாநி பஞ்சாஸத்வ்யாயதாநாம் மஹாத்மநாம் ।
மஞ்ஜூஷாமஷ்டசக்ராம் தாம் ஸமூஹுஸ்தே கதஞ்சந ॥
nṛṇāṃ ṡatāni pañcāṡadvyāyatānāṃ mahātmanām ।
mañjūṣāmaṣṭacakrāṃ tāṃ samūhustē kathañcana ॥
Fifty thousand tall and strong men pulled
the chest containing the bow,
which was mounted on eight wheels,
with great difficulty.
1.67.5 தாமாதாய து மஞ்ஜூஷாமாயஸீம் யத்ர தத்தநு: ।
ஸுரோபமம் தே ஜநகமூசுர்ந்ருபதிமந்த்ரிண: ॥
tāmādāya tu mañjūṣāmāyasīṃ yatra taddhanuḥ ।
surōpamaṃ tē janakamūcurnṛpatimantriṇaḥ ॥
Those ministers of the king, thus getting the chest,
said to Janaka, who was comparable to Dēvas:
1.67.6 இதம் தநுர்வரம் ராஜந் பூஜிதம் ஸர்வராஜபி: ।
மிதிலாதிப ராஜேந்த்ர தர்ஸநீயம் யதிச்சஸி ॥
idaṃ dhanurvaraṃ rājan pūjitaṃ sarvarājabhiḥ ।
mithilādhipa rājēndra darṡanīyaṃ yadicchasi ॥
O king! O ruler of Mithilā! O lord of kings!
Here is the great bow that is revered by all kings,
to be shown, if we wish so.
1.67.7 தேஷாம் ந்ருபோ வச: ஸ்ருத்வா க்ருதாஞ்ஜலிரபாஷத ।
விஸ்வாமித்ரம் மஹாத்மாநம் தௌ சோபௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
tēṣāṃ nṛpō vacaḥ ṡrutvā kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ।
viṡvāmitraṃ mahātmānaṃ tau cōbhau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
Then the king said to
Mahātma Viṡwāmitra with folded hands
and to the duo of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa:
1.67.8 இதம் தநுர்வரம் ப்ரஹ்மந் ஜநகைரபிபூஜிதம் ।
ராஜபிஸ்ச மஹாவீர்யைரஸக்தை: பூரிதும் புரா ॥
idaṃ dhanurvaraṃ brahman janakairabhipūjitam ।
rājabhiṡca mahāvīryairaṡaktaiḥ pūrituṃ purā ॥
O Brahman! Here is that great bow,
revered by all the ancestors of Janaka,
which many kings in the past
were unable to string.
1.67.9 நைதத் ஸுரகணா: ஸர்வே நாஸுரா ந ச ராக்ஷஸா: ।
கந்தர்வயக்ஷப்ரவரா: ஸகிந்நரமஹோரகா: ॥
naitat suragaṇāḥ sarvē nāsurā na ca rākṣasāḥ ।
gandharvayakṣapravarāḥ sakinnaramahōragāḥ ॥
Neither the Dēvas, nor the Asuras, nor Rākshasas,
nor the greatest Gandharvas and Yakshas,
nor Kinnaras and Uragas (were about to string it).
1.67.10 க்வ கதிர்மாநுஷாணாம் ச தநுஷோऽஸ்ய ப்ரபூரணே ।
ஆரோபணே ஸமாயோகே வேபநே தோலநேऽபி வா ॥
kva gatirmānuṣāṇāṃ ca dhanuṣō'sya prapūraṇē ।
ārōpaṇē samāyōgē vēpanē tōlanē'pi vā ॥
What to speak of the prowess of humans,
in either bending it, or in tying the string,
or in positioning an arrow on it
or in drawing the string or in even moving it?
1.67.11 ததேதத்தநுஷாம் ஸ்ரேஷ்டமாநீதம் முநிபுங்கவ ।
தர்ஸயைதந்மஹாபாக அநயோ ராஜபுத்ரயோ: ॥
tadētaddhanuṣāṃ ṡrēṣṭhamānītaṃ munipuṅgava ।
darṡayaitanmahābhāga anayō rājaputrayōḥ ॥
O best among the Munis!
That great bow has now been brought here.
O blessed one! Please show this bow to the princes.
1.67.12 விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்து தர்மாத்மா ஸ்ருத்வா ஜநகபாஷிதம் ।
வத்ஸ ராம தநு: பஸ்ய இதி ராகவமப்ரவீத் ॥
viṡvāmitrastu dharmātmā ṡrutvā janakabhāṣitam ।
vatsa rāma dhanuḥ paṡya iti rāghavamabravīt ॥
Dharmātmā Viṡwāmitra, hearing those words of Janaka,
said to the prince of Raghu dynasty:
"Dear Rāma, please see the bow!"
1.67.13 மஹர்ஷேர்வசநாத்ராமோ யத்ர திஷ்டதி தத்தநு: ।
மஞ்ஜூஷாம் தாமபாவ்ருத்ய த்ருஷ்ட்வா தநுரதாப்ரவீத் ॥
maharṣērvacanādrāmō yatra tiṣṭhati taddhanuḥ ।
mañjūṣāṃ tāmapāvṛtya dṛṣṭvā dhanurathābravīt ॥
Following the direction of the Maharshi,
Rāma went near the chest,
opened it and saw the bow and said:
1.67.14 இதம் தநுர்வரம் ப்ரஹ்மந் ஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஸாமீஹ பாணிநா ।
யத்நவாம்ஸ்ச பவிஷ்யாமி தோலநே பூரணேऽபி வா ॥
idaṃ dhanurvaraṃ brahman saṃspṛṡāmīha pāṇinā ।
yatnavāṃṡca bhaviṣyāmi tōlanē pūraṇē'pi vā ॥
O Brahman! I would like to
touch the bow now with my hand.
I would also like to try to move it and string it.
1.67.15 பாடமித்யப்ரவீத்ராஜா முநிஸ்ச ஸமபாஷத ।
லீலயா ஸ தநுர்மத்யே ஜக்ராஹ வசநாந்முநே:
bāḍhamityabravīdrājā muniṡca samabhāṣata ।
līlayā sa dhanurmadhyē jagrāha vacanānmunēḥ
Both the Muni and king said, "OK!"
With that word of the Muni, Rāma raised
the bow holding it in the centre.
1.67.16 பஸ்யதாம் ந்ருஸஹஸ்ராணாம் பஹூநாம் ரகுநந்தந: ।
ஆரோபயத்ஸ தர்மாத்மா ஸ லீலமிவ தத்தநு: ॥
paṡyatāṃ nṛsahasrāṇāṃ bahūnāṃ raghunandanaḥ ।
ārōpayatsa dharmātmā sa līlamiva tatdhanuḥ ॥
As thousands of kings watched,
that Dharmātmā Rāma stringed the bow with utmost ease.
1.67.17 ஆரோபயித்வா தர்மாத்மா பூரயாமாஸ தத்தநு: ।
தத்பபஞ்ஜ தநுர்மத்யே நரஸ்ரேஷ்டோ மஹாயஸா: ॥
ārōpayitvā dharmātmā pūrayāmāsa taddhanuḥ ।
tadbabhañja dhanurmadhyē naraṡrēṣṭhō mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
After stringing the bow, that Dharmātmā
drew the string to the maximum.
That renowned, exceptional man,
then broke the bow in the middle.
1.67.18 தஸ்ய ஸப்தோ மஹாநாஸீந்நிர்காதஸமநிஸ்வந: ।
பூமிகம்பஸ்ச ஸுமஹாந் பர்வதஸ்யேவ தீர்யத: ॥
tasya ṡabdō mahānāsīnnirghātasamanisvanaḥ ।
bhūmikampaṡca sumahān parvatasyēva dīryataḥ ॥
The bow broke with the sound of thunder.
The earth shook violently as to
make the mountains break apart.
1.67.19 நிபேதுஸ்ச நரா: ஸர்வே தேந ஸப்தேந மோஹிதா: ।
வர்ஜயித்வா முநவிரம் ராஜாநம் தௌ ச ராகவௌ ॥
nipētuṡca narāḥ sarvē tēna ṡabdēna mōhitāḥ ।
varjayitvā munaviraṃ rājānaṃ tau ca rāghavau ॥
Everyone except that great Muni,
king Janaka, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
fell down numbed and shocked by that sound.
1.67.20 ப்ரத்யாஸ்வஸ்தே ஜநே தஸ்மிந் ராஜா விகதஸாத்வஸ: ।
உவாச ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யம் வாக்யஜ்ஞோ முநிபுங்கவம் ॥
pratyāṡvastē janē tasmin rājā vigatasādhvasaḥ ।
uvāca prāñjalirvākyaṃ vākyajñō munipuṅgavam ॥
Just as everyone regained their senses,
the eloquent king, with his apprehensions allayed,
spoke to that great Muni with folded hands:
1.67.21 பகவந் த்ருஷ்டவீர்யோ மே ராமோ தஸரதாத்மஜ: ।
அத்யத்புதமசிந்த்யம் ச ந தர்கிதமிதம் மயா ॥
bhagavan dṛṣṭavīryō mē rāmō daṡarathātmajaḥ ।
atyadbhutamacintyaṃ ca na tarkitamidaṃ mayā ॥
O Bhagawan! I now saw the valor and strength
of Rāma, the son of Daṡaratha.
It is amazing, unbelievable and I can hardly comprehend it!
1.67.22 ஜநகாநாம் குலே கீர்திமாஹரிஷ்யதி மே ஸுதா ।
ஸீதா பர்தாரமாஸாத்ய ராமம் தஸரதாத்மஜம் ॥
janakānāṃ kulē kīrtimāhariṣyati mē sutā ।
sītā bhartāramāsādya rāmaṃ daṡarathātmajam ॥
My daughter Seetā, by having Rāma,
the son of Daṡaratha, as her husband,
would bring great reputation to the lineage of Janaka.
1.67.23 மம ஸத்யா ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா ச வீர்யஸுல்கேதி கௌஸிக ।
ஸீதா ப்ராணைர்பஹுமதா தேயா ராமாய மே ஸுதா ॥
mama satyā pratijñā ca vīryaṡulkēti kauṡika ।
sītā prāṇairbahumatā dēyā rāmāya mē sutā ॥
O son of Kuṡika! True to my word that
she should be given to a valiant hero,
my daughter Seetā, who is my life,
should be given to Rāma.
1.67.24 பவதோऽநுமதே ப்ரஹ்மந் ஸீக்ரம் கச்சந்து மந்த்ரிண: ।
மம கௌஸிக பத்ரம் தே அயோத்யாம் த்வரிதா ரதை: ॥
bhavatō'numatē brahman ṡīghraṃ gacchantu mantriṇaḥ ।
mama kauṡika bhadraṃ tē ayōdhyāṃ tvaritā rathaiḥ ॥
O Brahman! O son of Kuṡika!
With your permission, the ministers shall
immediately go to Ayōdhyā on chariots.
May all bode well for you!
1.67.25 ராஜாநம் ப்ரஸ்ரிதைர்வாக்யைராநயந்து புரம் மம ।
ப்ரதாநம் வீர்யஸுல்காயா: கதயந்து ச ஸர்வஸ: ॥
rājānaṃ praṡritairvākyairānayantu puraṃ mama ।
pradānaṃ vīryaṡulkāyāḥ kathayantu ca sarvaṡaḥ ॥
They shall, with utmost respect and regard,
convey everything about giving Seetā to the hero
and bring the king to my city!
1.67.26 முநிகுப்தௌ ச காகுத்ஸ்தௌ கதயந்து ந்ருபாய வை ।
ப்ரீயமாணம் து ராஜாநமாநயந்து ஸுஸீக்ரகா: ॥
muniguptau ca kākutsthau kathayantu nṛpāya vai ।
prīyamāṇaṃ tu rājānamānayantu suṡīghragāḥ ॥
They shall recount to the king that
both the princes of Kākutstha lineage
were under the able protection of the Muni.
They shall go immediately and
bring the pleased king here.
1.67.27 கௌஸிகஸ்ச ததேத்யாஹ ராஜா சாபாஷ்ய மந்த்ரிண: ।
அயோத்யாம் ப்ரேஷயாமாஸ தர்மாத்மா க்ருதஸாஸநாந் ।
யதாவ்ருத்தம் ஸமாக்யாதுமாநேதும் ச ந்ருபம் ததா ॥
kauṡikaṡca tathētyāha rājā cābhāṣya mantriṇaḥ ।
ayōdhyāṃ prēṣayāmāsa dharmātmā kṛtaṡāsanān ।
yathāvṛttaṃ samākhyātumānētuṃ ca nṛpaṃ tadā ॥
The son of Kuṡika said: "May it be so!"
Then the Dharmātmā king,
after discussing with his ministers,
sent the appointed men to Ayōdhyā
to tell everything as it happened
and to bring the king.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸ்ரீமத்பாலகாண்டே ஸப்தஷஷ்டிதம: ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē saptaṣaṣṭitamaḥ sargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the sixty seventh Sarga
in Bāla Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
