    Mathrupanchakam

Sri Adi Shankara, sensed that the last moments of his mother Aryambal’s life was nearing & she also thought of her dear son. The son reached his mother’s side with yogic powers and with folded hands praises the Mother – with five hymns (Mathrupanchakam). It is worthy to refer to the original stotram – however, the gist of the first hymn which is popular in Kerala as “Ekashloka Mathru Sthuthi” reads as:

May the salutations be unto the mother. The pain experienced by her at the time of delivery, the emaciation or the body becoming thin during pregnancy, the yearlong sharing of the bed made dirty by the child, none of these miserable experiences endured by the mother during pregnancy and thereafter can in any manner be compensation even by a great son.
