    ASTAPATHI

    Ashtapadis or Ashtapadi are Indian hymns where the music has eight lines (steps) within each composition. Each ashtapadi song is set in a special raga (an Indian musical mode) and tala. It is a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion. The literal meaning of "ashtapadi" is "eight steps."

    Ashtapadi ( eight verses ) : Jagannath Asthaka is the name given to the poetry by Jayadeva in Gita Govindam consisting of 26 Ashtapadis. Ashtapadi hymns are regular compositions of music in India. Each song of Ashtapadi is set in a special raga and tala. It is a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion . It is in Sanskrit language . Gitagovindam is a lyrical poetry in tweleve chapters, sub-divided into twenty four divisions called Prabandha . The songs in Gitagovindam symbolize the the eternal love of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha.

    Who composed ASTAPATHI song?

    12th century by Indian poet Jayadeva from Kenduli Sasan, a village near the famous temple city of Puri in Sanskrit language.

    Gita Govinda was composed in the 12th century by Indian poet Jayadeva from Kenduli Sasan, a village near the famous temple city of Puri in Sanskrit language. Gita Govindam is a lyrical poetry in twelve chapters, sub-divided into twenty four divisions called Prabandha. The Prabandhas contain couplets grouped into eights, called ashtapadis. The songs in Gita Govinda symbolize the eternal love of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha.

    The Ashtapathi songs are called "GEETHA GOVINDA MAHAA KAAVYAM", which is said to be the ancient form of Sringaara Kaavyams. These are full of Sringaara Rasapravaaham.

    In short, These songs describe the celestial love between Raadhika Devi and Krishna, The Egoistic nature of Raadhika, Her Anger towards Krishna, Her viraha thaapam (sorrow in separation), reunion and their Sallapam. This Kaavyam is composed by Sri Jayadeva Swamigal, from self experience of the Godly principle within.
