Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 89
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa joins the fight to help Lakshmaṇa. He and his aids assault the forces of Indrajit.
Vibheeshaṇa also reinvigorates the Vānaras reminding them that Indrajit is the last hope remaining for Rāvaṇa and once he is killed there is none remaining except for Rāvaṇa himself, among the Rākshasa chiefs. He also reminds them that they have killed all other great Rākshasas like Prahasta, Kumbhakarṇa, Kumbha and should be able to kill Indrajit also. The Vānaras, roused thus, along with Jāmbavān and his bear forces, take on the Rākshasa forces.
Meanwhile the duel between Indrajit and Lakshmaṇa continues. Lakshmaṇa succeeds in cutting off the head of the charioteer and the Vānaras, in slaying the horses and smashing the chariot. Indrajit continues to shoot arrows standing on the ground and Lakshmaṇa responds to them by shooting more arrows.

yudhyamānau tu tau dṛṣṭvā
prasaktau nararākṣasau ।
prabhinnāviva mātaṅgau
parasparajayaiṣiṇau ।
tayōryuddhaṃ draṣṭukāmaḥ
varacāpadharō balī ।
ṡūraḥ sa rāvaṇabhrātā
tasthau saṅgrāmamūrdhani ॥
Seeing those two, the human and the Rākshasa,
absorbed in the fight like elephants in rut,
each wanting to win over the other,
the strong and heroic brother of Rāvaṇa
stood on that battlefront
armed with an excellent bow,
to witness the continuing fight between them.

utsasarja ca tīkṣṇāgrān
rākṣasēṣu mahāṡarān ॥
Taking the stand, he twanged his great bow
and shot the best of his sharp-pointed arrows
at the Rākshasas.

Those fiery arrows,
squarely hitting their target,
tore apart the Rākshasas
like thunderbolts do great mountains.

cicchiduḥ samarē vīrān
rākṣasān rākṣasōttamāḥ ॥
Vibheeshaṇa's powerful Rākshasa aides too
fought the Rākshasa warriors
hacking them with spears, swords and Paṭṭiṡas.

babhau madhyē pradhṛṣṭānām
kalabhānāmiva dvipaḥ ॥
Vibheeshaṇa shone in their midst like a
tusker with its confident young about him.

kālajñō rakṣasāṃ varaḥ ॥
That foremost of the Rākshasas,
who had a great sense of timing,
said these words, at the right time,
to rouse the Vānaras who, anyway,
would have only loved to slay the Rākshasas:

He is the only one that is there, on whom
the hopes of the Lord of Rākshasas lie.
He is the only one left in the entire army;
why do you hesitate, O lords of Vānaras!

asmin vinihatē pāpē
rākṣasē raṇamūrdhani ।
rāvaṇaṃ varjayitvā tu
ṡēṣamasya hataṃ balam ।
prahastō nihatō vīrō
nikumbhaṡca mahābalaḥ ।
kumbhakarṇaṡca kumbhaṡca
dhūmrākṣaṡca niṡācaraḥ ।
jambumālī mahāmālī
tīkṣṇavēgō'ṡaniprabhaḥ ।
suptaghnō ya jñakōpaṡca
vajradaṃṣṭraṡca rākṣasaḥ ।
saṃhrādī vikaṭō'righnaḥ
tapanō maṃda ēva ca ।
praghāsaḥ praghasaṡcaiva
prajaṅghō jaṅgha ēva ca ।
agnikētuṡca durdharṣō
raṡmikētuṡca vīryavān ।
vidyujjihvō dvijihvaṡca
sūryaṡatruṡca rākṣasaḥ ।
akampanaḥ supārṡvaṡca
cakramālī ca rākṣasaḥ ।
kampanaḥ sattvavantau tau
dēvāntakanarāntakau ॥
Once this sinful Rākshasa
is slain on the battlefront,
there is none left in the army
except Rāvaṇa himself, with
valiant Prahasta already slain,
and so also Nikumbha of immense strength,
Kumbhakarṇa, Kumbha, the Night-Rover Dhūmrāksha, Jambumāli, Mahāmāli, Teekshṇavēga, Aṡaniprabha,
Suptaghna, Yajñakōpa, the Rākshasa Vajradaṃshṭra,
Samhrādi, Vikaṭā, the destroyer of foe,
Tapana, Manda, Praghāsa, Praghasa,
Prajaṅgha, Jaṅgha, the unassailable Agnikētu,
the valiant Raṡmikētu, Vidyujjihva,
Dwijihva, the Rākshasa Sūryaṡatru, Akampana,
Supārṡwa, the Rākshasa Cakramāli, Kampana,
and those two men of mettle, Dēvāntaka and Narāntaka.

bahūn rākṣasasattamān ।
bāhubhyāṃ sāgaraṃ tīrtvā
laṅghyatāṃ gōṣpadaṃ laghu ॥
Slaying these extraordinary strong ones
and many other mighty Rākshasas,
you have already swum across
the ocean with your two bare hands,
and all that remains to leap over
is just a small cow’s hoof puddle.

rākṣasā baladarpitāḥ ॥
These are all that are left for you
to be won over, O Vānaras!
The rest of the Rākshasas who challenged you,
being cocksure of their strength, have perished.

putrasya janiturmama ।
ghṛṇāmapāsya rāmārthē
nihanyāṃ bhrāturātmajam ॥
Me being like his own father,
and he being like my own son,
it would be so wrong for me to kill him.
But, for the sake of Rāma, erasing
all traces of such consideration from my heart,
I shall slay the son of my brother.

tamēvaiṣa mahābāhuḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ ṡamayiṣyati ।
vānarā ghnata sambhūya
bhṛtyānasya samīpagān ॥
Yet, as much as I want to slay him,
my eyes get blurred with tears.
It has to be Lakshmaṇa of mighty arm,
who shall give him his quietus.
You, O Vānaras, coming together,
should slay his attendants
who fall within your reach.

Thus exhorted by that Rākshasa of splendid renown,
the Vānara chiefs were enthused, and flung their tails.

Then those tigers among Vānaras,
shouted again and again,
making every kind of sound, like
peacocks do when they sight a raincloud.

assaulted the Rākshasas using
stones, claws and teeth (for weapons).

The Rākshasas of immense strength,
casting aside fear and
armed with every kind of weapon.
surrounded Jāmbavān, the leader of the bears,
who was assaulting them.

paṭṭiṡairyaṣṭitōmaraiḥ ।

nighnantaṃ rākṣasīṃ camūm ॥
They struck Jāmbavān, who was wreaking
havoc on the Rākshasa army in that battle,
with arrows, sharp battle-axes,
Paṭṭiṡas, Yashṭis and Tōmaras.

sa samprahārastumulaḥ
sañjajñē kapirakṣasām ।
dēvāsurāṇāṃ kruddhānām
yathā bhīmō mahāsvanaḥ ॥
That fight between the Vānaras
and the Rākshasas became tumultuous
raising a terrifying din,
recalling the battles between the
enraged Dēvas and Asuras.

ஸாநுமுத்பாட்ய பர்வதாத் ।

ரக்ஷஸாம் கதநம் சக்ரே
ஸமாஸாத்ய ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
hanumānapi saṅkruddhaḥ
sānumutpāṭya parvatāt ।
sa lakṣmaṇaṃ svayaṃ pṛṣṭāt
avarōpasya mahāmanāḥ ।
rakṣasāṃ kadanaṃ cakrē
samāsādya sahasraṡaḥ ॥
Hanumān, a giant at heart, too,
put down Lakshmaṇa who was on his back,
and pulled out the side of a mountain
and slew thousands of Rākshasas with it, in wrath.

pitṛvyasyēndrajit balī ।
lakṣmaṇaṃ paravīraghnam
punarēvābhyadhāvata ॥
After giving a tough fight to his uncle
the strong Indrajit, dashed again towards
Lakshmaṇa, destroyer of foe.

mṛdhē lakṣmaṇarākṣasau ।
ṡaraughānabhivarṣantau
jaghnatustau parasparam ॥
Lakshmaṇa and the Rākshasa, both Veeras,
struck each other, raining arrows in that
fierce fight in which they were engaged.

Like the sun and the moon
disappearing behind the clouds
once the summer ends (and monsoon sets in),
those two powerful ones of
immense strength disappeared
behind the volleys of arrows (they shot).

dhanuṣō vā parigrahaḥ ।
na vipramōkṣō bāṇānām
na vikarṣō na vigrahaḥ ।
na muṣṭipratisandhānam
na lakṣyapratipādanam ।
adṛṡyata tayōstatra
yudhyatōḥ pāṇilāghavāt ॥
The skill and speed of their hands was such
that nothing could be seen distinctly:
neither picking up of the right arrow,
nor the taking of it in the hand,
nor the steadying of the bow,
nor the mounting of it on the bow,
nor the doubling of the fist,
nor the pulling of the string,
nor the shooting of the arrow,
nor it reaching the target.

The space between the earth and sky
was so crowded with the shoals of arrows
shot from the swift-shooting bows,
that no object could be seen.

With Lakshmaṇa closing in on Rāvaṇa's son
and Rāvaṇa's son closing in on Lakshmaṇa,
there ensued a tight gridlock,
with each one of them offering
stiff resistance to the other.

The entire sky was enveloped in darkness,
covered by the sharp arrows
that those two powerful ones
shot constantly without a break.

With many hundreds of
their sharp arrows flying,
all the cardinals and corners
were densely covered with arrows.

tamasā pihitaṃ sarvam
āsītpratibhayaṃ mahat ।

With everything enveloped in darkness
it became an extremely frightful sight.
With the sun setting,
the battlefront plunged into darkness.
Huge rivers of blood flowed in their thousands. The rest of the Ṡlōkas here seem to be like a string of beads strung almost in a random order, and some even missing.
I am sure it must have been a challenge for the compilers of the modern times to string together the palm leaves found in attics in various parts of India, some partially lost, some accidentally shuffled and out of order.
Vedas, considered having come directly from the gods, were preserved letter to letter and intonation to intonation, through a rigorous oral tradition. But such is not the case with Rāmāyaṇa.
Rāmāyaṇa is a story, an expression of human emotions, that is meant to be told and retold. The focus has never been on preserving the original verbatim, but on retelling it with more meaning, more color and more beauty, by each and every poet, using his artistic and creative genius, reflecting the wisdom of his own life and the life times of the others he knew. This is the reason why we are blessed with such a variety of versions of Rāmāyaṇa, told by poets spread over vast regions of the earth and over a vast amount of time.
We can never tell with certainty what exactly are the Ṡlōkas and in what order they were sung by Vālmeeki. He passed them on to Kuṡa and Lava, as the legend goes, and then they were handed down from artist to artist, generation to generation, and from region to region. If anything, it can only be expected to undergo changes, by people who wanted to retell with even better or simpler language or to give an additional emphasis in various portions.
The version we render here is called 'Southern Edition', compiled by modern day scholars from palm leaves and oral traditions. Their challenge of stringing together scattered beads is certainly unenviable, and what we get is what we get, out of their best efforts.
And you have to use your imagination to fill the gaps and reorder the material where you feel necessary.
The Ṡlōkas 36 to 39 here, which seem to indicate that the fight has ended for the day, are an example of things being out of place, after which come the Ṡlōkas that tell that the fight continues.

the blessed Rāghava skillfully cut off the
head of the charioteer who was
maneuvering the chariot just as needed,
with that arrow that fell like a thunderbolt,
while the thud of bowstring
striking the palm reverberated.

Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 89
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa joins the fight to help Lakshmaṇa. He and his aids assault the forces of Indrajit.
Vibheeshaṇa also reinvigorates the Vānaras reminding them that Indrajit is the last hope remaining for Rāvaṇa and once he is killed there is none remaining except for Rāvaṇa himself, among the Rākshasa chiefs. He also reminds them that they have killed all other great Rākshasas like Prahasta, Kumbhakarṇa, Kumbha and should be able to kill Indrajit also. The Vānaras, roused thus, along with Jāmbavān and his bear forces, take on the Rākshasa forces.
Meanwhile the duel between Indrajit and Lakshmaṇa continues. Lakshmaṇa succeeds in cutting off the head of the charioteer and the Vānaras, in slaying the horses and smashing the chariot. Indrajit continues to shoot arrows standing on the ground and Lakshmaṇa responds to them by shooting more arrows.

Suptaghna, Yajñakōpa, the Rākshasa Vajradaṃshṭra,
Samhrādi, Vikaṭā, the destroyer of foe,
Tapana, Manda, Praghāsa, Praghasa,
Prajaṅgha, Jaṅgha, the unassailable Agnikētu,
the valiant Raṡmikētu, Vidyujjihva,
Dwijihva, the Rākshasa Sūryaṡatru, Akampana,
Supārṡwa, the Rākshasa Cakramāli, Kampana,
and those two men of mettle, Dēvāntaka and Narāntaka.

Huge rivers of blood flowed in their thousands. The rest of the Ṡlōkas here seem to be like a string of beads strung almost in a random order, and some even missing.
I am sure it must have been a challenge for the compilers of the modern times to string together the palm leaves found in attics in various parts of India, some partially lost, some accidentally shuffled and out of order.
Vedas, considered having come directly from the gods, were preserved letter to letter and intonation to intonation, through a rigorous oral tradition. But such is not the case with Rāmāyaṇa.
Rāmāyaṇa is a story, an expression of human emotions, that is meant to be told and retold. The focus has never been on preserving the original verbatim, but on retelling it with more meaning, more color and more beauty, by each and every poet, using his artistic and creative genius, reflecting the wisdom of his own life and the life times of the others he knew. This is the reason why we are blessed with such a variety of versions of Rāmāyaṇa, told by poets spread over vast regions of the earth and over a vast amount of time.
We can never tell with certainty what exactly are the Ṡlōkas and in what order they were sung by Vālmeeki. He passed them on to Kuṡa and Lava, as the legend goes, and then they were handed down from artist to artist, generation to generation, and from region to region. If anything, it can only be expected to undergo changes, by people who wanted to retell with even better or simpler language or to give an additional emphasis in various portions.
The version we render here is called 'Southern Edition', compiled by modern day scholars from palm leaves and oral traditions. Their challenge of stringing together scattered beads is certainly unenviable, and what we get is what we get, out of their best efforts.
And you have to use your imagination to fill the gaps and reorder the material where you feel necessary.
The Ṡlōkas 36 to 39 here, which seem to indicate that the fight has ended for the day, are an example of things being out of place, after which come the Ṡlōkas that tell that the fight continues.

முகேப்யோ ருதிரம் ரக்தம்
ஹயாநாம் ஸமவர்தத ।
தே ஹயா மதிதா பக்நா
வ்யஸவோ தரணீம் கதா: ॥
tēṣāmadhiṣṭhitānāṃ taiḥ
vānaraiḥ parvatōpamaiḥ ।
mukhēbhyō rudhiraṃ raktam
hayānāṃ samavartata ।
tē hayā mathitā bhagnā
vyasavō dharaṇīṃ gatāḥ ॥
With those mountainous Vānaras
pressing heavily on them, the horses
bled profusely from their mouths.
Those horses, pounded and broken,
fell on the ground dead.

pramathya ca mahāratham ।
punarutpatya vēgēna
tasthurlakṣmaṇapārṡvataḥ ॥
After slaying the horses,
they smashed the great chariot.
Then they leaped back as fast
and stood by the side of Lakshmaṇa.

ṡaravarṣēṇa saumitrim
abhyadhāvata rāvaṇiḥ ॥
Rāvaṇa’s son, jumping down from the
chariot whose horses and driver had been killed,
attacked Sowmitri with a flood of arrows.

பதாதிநம் தம் நிஹதைர்ஹயோத்தமை: ।
ஸ்ருஜந்தமாஜௌ நிஸிதாந் ஸரோத்தமாந்
ப்ருஸம் ததா பாணகணைர்ந்யவாரயத் ॥
tatō mahēndrapratimaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ
padātinaṃ taṃ nihatairhayōttamaiḥ ।
sṛjantamājau niṡitān ṡarōttamān
bhṛṡaṃ tadā bāṇagaṇairnyavārayat ॥
Lakshmaṇa, who was like another Mahēndra,
in response to that flood of arrows
shot by Indrajit who was on foot
because his eminent horses were killed,
shot many of the best of
his sharp arrows, in that fight.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஏகோநநவதிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
yuddhakāṇḍē ēkōnanavatitamaḥ sargaḥ॥
