Yuddha Kaanda - Sarga 87
In this Sarga, Vibheeshaṇa takes Lakshmaṇa to a huge banyan tree, by which Indrajit would perform the rite that makes him invisible and hence invincible. Vibheeshaṇa advises Lakshmaṇa that he should slay Indrajit before he reaches the tree. Meanwhile, Indrajit appears in his chariot and Lakshmaṇa challenges him to a fight.
However, Indrajit turns to Vibheeshaṇa and lashes out at him for deserting his own brother and his kindred, and serving the enemy. Vibheeshaṇa lashes out back at him, for the disrespect he showed to him, with no regard to his character, which is to follow Dharma and stay away from cruel deeds. He recounts all the evils of Rāvaṇa, and reminds that it is Rāvaṇa who abjured him.

Saying this to Sowmitri in all excitement,
and taking him, who was armed with a bow, along with him
Vibheeshaṇa went forth quickly.

offering propitiating oblations to the spirits here.

Then he, the Rākshasa, becomes
invisible to all creatures
and then destroys his enemies in a fight
binding them with the best of arrows.

and his charioteer with your sharp arrows
before he reaches the banyan tree.

Saying 'yes', Sowmitri of immense power,
the delight of his friends,
took his stand right there,
twanging his stylish bow.

Then that immensely powerful one
told the descendant of Paulastya,

give me a fight that is worthy!'

spoke these harsh words on seeing Vibheeshaṇa there:

iha tvaṃ jātasaṃvṛddhaḥ
sākṣādbhrātā piturmama ।
kathaṃ druhyasi putrasya
pitṛvyō mama rākṣasa ॥
You were born and brought up here.
You are my father’s own brother.
How could you, my uncle,
bring yourself to harm me, O Rākshasa?

O you, who flout Dharma!
You do not care about Dharma
or the ties of kinship!
You show no elderly affection or
care for the kindred or for the brother,
O evil-minded one!

nindanīyaṡca sādhubhiḥ ।

You, O evil-minded one, are pathetic!
All good men must condemn you
for deserting your own folk and
going into the service of the foe.

kvaca svajanasaṃvāsaḥ
kvaca nīcaparāṡrayaḥ ॥
Your mind has degenerated.
You are not able to see the huge difference
between living with your own folk
and taking shelter with a wretched foe.

svajanō nirguṇō'pi vā ।
nirguṇaḥ svajanaḥ ṡrēyān
yaḥ paraḥ para ēva saḥ ॥
Even if the foe is full of virtues
and your own folk have none of them,
your own folk who lack virtues are better,
for the foe is a foe.

பரபக்ஷம் நிஷேவதே ।

yaḥ svapakṣaṃ parityajya
parapakṣaṃ niṣēvatē ।
sa svapakṣē kṣayaṃ prāptē
paṡcāttairēva hanyatē ॥
One who abjures one's own side
and serves the other side
will be eventually killed by them,
once his own side is exterminated.

svajanēna tvayā ṡakyam
pauruṣaṃ rāvaṇānuja ॥
This kind of manliness that is
devoid of all empathy towards one's own folk,
is only possible for you,
O Night-Rover, O brother of Rāvaṇa!

ப்ரத்யுவாச விபீஷண: ॥

Vibheeshaṇa responded saying:

kiṃ rākṣasa vikatthasē ।
rākṣasēndrasutāsādhō
pāruṣyaṃ tyaja gauravāt ॥
Why do you prate, O Rākshasa,
as if you are not aware of my character!
Stop being uncivil at least
out of respect for my age and kinship,
o evil son of the lord of Rākshasas!

kulē yadyapyahaṃ jātō
rakṣasāṃ krūrakarmaṇām ।
guṇō yaḥ prathamō nṛṇām
tanmē ṡīlamarākṣasam ॥
Even though I am born into the race of
Rākshasas given to cruel deeds,
my nature, unlike that of Rākshasas,
is to follow the highest virtues of humans.

I delight neither in cruel deeds,
nor do I indulge in Adharma!
How could a brother abjure his own brother
just because his nature is different from his own?

puruṣaṃ pāpaniṡcayam ।
tyaktvā sukhamavāpnōti

One who abandons a man with a character
that slipped from the path of Dharma
and is bent on sinful deeds,
will certainly be happy, like one
who shakes a poisonous viper off his hand.

The horrid murder of Maharshis,
the perpetual feud with the Dēvas,
the monumental pride, the anger and
the inveterate enmity and antagonism towards others —
these evil qualities of my brother
which can destroy anybody's life and power,
have overshadowed his virtues
like clouds do mountains.

baddhastvaṃ kālapāṡēna
brūhi māṃ yadyadicchasi ॥
It is because of these evils that
I abjured your father who is my brother.
Neither this city nor yourself nor your father
is going to survive, O arrogant pup!
The noose of death is tightening around your neck
and that is why you, O Rākshasa,
who lack even an iota of humility
speak to me thus, as you like!

hatastvaṃ dēvatākāryam
kariṣyasi yamakṣayē ॥
You can in no way escape with your life
having challenged Kākutstha!
Fight with Lakshmaṇa, a lord of men, in this battle!
Slain, you will do the bidding of Dēvas
in the abode of Yama!

nidarṡayasvātmabalaṃ samudyataṃ

na lakṣmaṇasyaitya hi bāṇagōcaraṃ
tvamadya jīvan sabalō gamiṣyasi ॥
Display all the strength that you can summon and
expend all the weapons you have.
Having come within range of Lakshmaṇa’s arrows,
you are not going to escape today
with your life, neither will your army.

யுத்தகாண்டே ஸப்தாஸதீதிதம: ஸர்க:॥

நிஹந்தி ஸமரே ஸத்ரூந்
பத்நாதி ச ஸரோத்தமை: ॥
adṛṡyaḥ sarvabhūtānām
tatō bhavati rākṣasaḥ ।
nihanti samarē ṡatrūn
badhnāti ca ṡarōttamaiḥ ॥
Then he, the Rākshasa, becomes
invisible to all creatures
and then destroys his enemies in a fight
binding them with the best of arrows.

balinaṃ rāvaṇātmajam ।
vidhvaṃsaya ṡaraistīkṣṇaiḥ
sarathaṃ sāṡvasārathim ॥
Slay him, and his chariot, his horses
and his charioteer with your sharp arrows
before he reaches the banyan tree.

citraṃ visphārayan dhanuḥ ॥
Saying 'yes', Sowmitri of immense power,
the delight of his friends,
took his stand right there,
twanging his stylish bow.

இந்த்ரஜித் கவசீ தந்வீ

balavān rāvaṇātmajaḥ ।
indrajit kavacī dhanvī
sadhvajaḥ pratyadṛṡyata ॥
Then Indrajit, the strong son of Rāvaṇa,
with his coat of mail and bow
appeared there in his chariot
that shone like fire, with its flag post.

paulastyamaparājitam ।
samāhvayē tvāṃ samarē
samyagyuddhaṃ prayaccha mē ॥
Then that immensely powerful one
told the descendant of Paulastya,
who never knew defeat,
'let me invite you to a battle;
give me a fight that is worthy!'

manasvī rāvaṇātmajaḥ ।
abravīt paruṣaṃ vākyam
tatra dṛṣṭvā vibhīṣaṇam ॥
Thus told, the son of Rāvaṇa,
of immense power and great self esteem
spoke these harsh words on seeing Vibheeshaṇa there:

iha tvaṃ jātasaṃvṛddhaḥ
sākṣādbhrātā piturmama ।
kathaṃ druhyasi putrasya
pitṛvyō mama rākṣasa ॥
You were born and brought up here.
You are my father’s own brother.
How could you, my uncle,
bring yourself to harm me, O Rākshasa?

na jātistava durmatē ।
pramāṇaṃ na ca saudaryam
na dharmō dharmadūṣaṇa ॥
O you, who flout Dharma!
You do not care about Dharma
or the ties of kinship!
You show no elderly affection or
care for the kindred or for the brother,
O evil-minded one!

ṡōcyastvamasi durbuddhē
nindanīyaṡca sādhubhiḥ ।
yastvaṃ svajanamutsṛjya
parabhṛtyatvamāgataḥ ॥
You, O evil-minded one, are pathetic!
All good men must condemn you
for deserting your own folk and
going into the service of the foe.

த்வம் வேத்ஸி மஹதந்தரம் ।

tvaṃ vētsi mahadantaram ।
kvaca svajanasaṃvāsaḥ
kvaca nīcaparāṡrayaḥ ॥
Your mind has degenerated.
You are not able to see the huge difference
between living with your own folk
and taking shelter with a wretched foe.

ஸ்வஜநோ நிர்குணோऽபி வா ।
நிர்குண: ஸ்வஜந: ஸ்ரேயாந்

guṇavān vā parajanaḥ
svajanō nirguṇō'pi vā ।
nirguṇaḥ svajanaḥ ṡrēyān
yaḥ paraḥ para ēva saḥ ॥
Even if the foe is full of virtues
and your own folk have none of them,
your own folk who lack virtues are better,
for the foe is a foe.

பரபக்ஷம் நிஷேவதே ।

yaḥ svapakṣaṃ parityajya
parapakṣaṃ niṣēvatē ।
sa svapakṣē kṣayaṃ prāptē
paṡcāttairēva hanyatē ॥
One who abjures one's own side
and serves the other side
will be eventually killed by them,
once his own side is exterminated.

யாத்ருஸீ தே நிஸாசர ।
ஸ்வஜநேந த்வயா ஸக்யம்

yādṛṡī tē niṡācara ।
svajanēna tvayā ṡakyam
pauruṣaṃ rāvaṇānuja ॥
This kind of manliness that is
devoid of all empathy towards one's own folk,
is only possible for you,
O Night-Rover, O brother of Rāvaṇa!

ப்ரத்யுவாச விபீஷண: ॥
ityuktō bhrātṛputrēṇa
pratyuvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥
Spoken to thus, by the son of his brother,
Vibheeshaṇa responded saying:

kiṃ rākṣasa vikatthasē ।
rākṣasēndrasutāsādhō
pāruṣyaṃ tyaja gauravāt ॥
Why do you prate, O Rākshasa,
as if you are not aware of my character!
Stop being uncivil at least
out of respect for my age and kinship,
o evil son of the lord of Rākshasas!

ரக்ஷஸாம் க்ரூரகர்மணாம் ।

kulē yadyapyahaṃ jātō
rakṣasāṃ krūrakarmaṇām ।
guṇō yaḥ prathamō nṛṇām
tanmē ṡīlamarākṣasam ॥
Even though I am born into the race of
Rākshasas given to cruel deeds,
my nature, unlike that of Rākshasas,
is to follow the highest virtues of humans.

ந சாதர்மேண வை ரமே ।
ப்ராத்ரா விஷமஸீலேந

na cādharmēṇa vai ramē ।
bhrātrā viṣamaṡīlēna
kathaṃ bhrātā nirasyatē ॥
I delight neither in cruel deeds,
nor do I indulge in Adharma!
How could a brother abjure his own brother
just because his nature is different from his own?

புருஷம் பாபநிஸ்சயம் ।

dharmātpracyutaṡīlaṃ hi
puruṣaṃ pāpaniṡcayam ।
tyaktvā sukhamavāpnōti
hastādāṡīviṣaṃ yathā ॥
One who abandons a man with a character
that slipped from the path of Dharma
and is bent on sinful deeds,
will certainly be happy, like one
who shakes a poisonous viper off his hand.

பரதாராபிமர்ஸகம் ।
த்யாஜ்யமாஹுர்துராசாரம்

paradārābhimarṡakam ।
tyājyamāhurdurācāram
vēṡma prajvalitaṃ yathā ॥
It has been said that one who indulges
in robbing other's possessions,
in violating other's women and
in following evil courses of action
must be abjured like a house on fire.

suhṛdāmatiṡaṅkā ca
trayō dōṣāḥ kṣayābahāḥ ॥
Snatching other's money, violating other's women,
and being suspicious of one's own well-wishers
are the three vices that bring destruction upon anyone.

maharṣiṇāṃ vadhō ghōraḥ
sarvadēvaiṡca vigrahaḥ ।
abhimānaṡca kōpaṡca
vairitvaṃ pratikūlatā ।
ētē dōṣā mama bhrātuḥ
jīvitaiṡvaryanāṡanāḥ ।
guṇān pracchādayāmāsuḥ
parvatāniva tōyadāḥ ॥
The horrid murder of Maharshis,
the perpetual feud with the Dēvas,
the monumental pride, the anger and
the inveterate enmity and antagonism towards others —
these evil qualities of my brother
which can destroy anybody's life and power,
have overshadowed his virtues
like clouds do mountains.

ப்ரூஹி மாம் யத்யதிச்சஸி ॥
dōṣairētaiḥ parityaktō
mayā bhrātā pitā tava ।
nēyamasti purī laṅkā
na ca tvaṃ na ca tē pitā ।
atimānī ca bālaṡca
durvinītaṡca rākṣasa ।
baddhastvaṃ kālapāṡēna
brūhi māṃ yadyadicchasi ॥
It is because of these evils that
I abjured your father who is my brother.
Neither this city nor yourself nor your father
is going to survive, O arrogant pup!
The noose of death is tightening around your neck
and that is why you, O Rākshasa,
who lack even an iota of humility
speak to me thus, as you like!

yanmāṃ paruṣamuktavān ।
pravēṣṭuṃ na tvayā ṡakyam
nyagrōdhō rākṣasādhama ॥
Realize that You, who talk so harshly to me,
are now in big trouble;
you cannot reach this
banyan tree, O base Rākshasa!

கரிஷ்யஸி யமக்ஷயே ॥
dharṣayitvā ca kākutsam
na ṡakyaṃ jīvituṃ tvayā ।
yuddhyasva naradēvēna
lakṣmaṇēna raṇē saha ।
hatastvaṃ dēvatākāryam
kariṣyasi yamakṣayē ॥
You can in no way escape with your life
having challenged Kākutstha!
Fight with Lakshmaṇa, a lord of men, in this battle!
Slain, you will do the bidding of Dēvas
in the abode of Yama!

குருஷ்வ ஸர்வாயுதஸாயகவ்யயம் ।

த்வமத்ய ஜீவந் ஸபலோ கமிஷ்யஸி ॥
nidarṡayasvātmabalaṃ samudyataṃ
kuruṣva sarvāyudhasāyakavyayam ।
na lakṣmaṇasyaitya hi bāṇagōcaraṃ
tvamadya jīvan sabalō gamiṣyasi ॥
Display all the strength that you can summon and
expend all the weapons you have.
Having come within range of Lakshmaṇa’s arrows,
you are not going to escape today
with your life, neither will your army.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
யுத்தகாண்டே ஸப்தாஸதீதிதம: ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
