Sri Krishna Jayanthi/ Sri Gokulastami
Gokulashtami or Gokul Ashtami (Janmashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanti) celebrates the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna.
Krishna Janmashtami is also known by various names like Gokulashtami,Krishnashtami,Krishna Jayanthi.
Its celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shrawana of the lunar Hindu Calendar and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapad of the lunisolar Hindu Calendar.
Some years Ashtami and Rohini star may not fall on the same day, hence celebrated on different days.
It is believed that Mother Earth once approached Lord Brahma to seek help from the raging persecution and utmost turmoil. Brahma, in turn, requested Sri Vishnu to intervene and restore ‘Dharma’.
Sri Vishnu thereupon promised to take birth as a mortal and defeat the evil forces reigning on the Earth.
Yada yada hi dharmasya glaanihi bhavati bharat |
Abhyutthaanam adharmasya tadaa aatmanam srujami aham ||
Paritraanaaya saadhoonaam vinaashaay cha dushkrutam |
Dharmsamsthaapanaarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge||
Sri Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita, “Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness grows in this world, the Almighty reveals His presence! The Supreme, though unborn and undying, becomes manifest in the human form to overthrow and defeat the forces of ignorance and selfishness.”
