We are brought up like this, that we believe when we ask for specific favor from a deity, we vow to God or goddess to perform certain things if the wish is granted.
When we are in distress, we seek God is on our side to help, nothing wrong on it...

Ceremonial ship launching is the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a naval tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years. It has been observed as a public celebration and a solemn blessing.
No matter what country it may be, Eastern or Western, savage or civilized, the launch of a ship is always the occasion of a picturesque and impressive ceremony.
While today breaking a bottle of champagne over the hull of a ship is considered tradition before launching a vessel in certain countries, particularly Britain and the United States, people have been performing ceremonies at launches seemingly as long as humans have made boats.
Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans called on their gods to protect seamen.
Japanese ship launchings incorporate silver axes which are thought to bring good luck and scare away evil. Japanese shipbuilders traditionally order the crafting of a special axe for each new vessel; and after the launching ceremony, they present the axe to the vessel's owner as a commemorative gift.
The axe is used to cut the rope which tethers the ship to the place where she was built.
The Duchess of Cornwall similarly launched HMS Prince of Wales by pulling a lever which smashed a bottle of single malt Scotch whisky at the side of the ship.
In India, ships have historically been launched with a Puja ceremony that dedicates the ship to a Hindu god or goddess, and seeks blessings for her and her sailors. Historically, Hindu priests would perform the puja ceremony at launch. In the 20th century, ship are launched with a lady breaking a coconut on the bow of the vessel, which is sometimes followed by a small Puja
So Belief and Faith are inborn in every culture
This faith in our deity is inborn in every one of us, it is not a superstition. Faith is a part of our daily routine, and the Faith and belief works every where.
In Temples, we light Deepam to a deity to fulfill our wishes, a cloth with money in it is stung in the Virutcham, telling our owes to Nandhi Bhagawan’s ear, etc etc
Ultra-modern Medanta Hospital in New Delhi, where one can see the entire wall strung with prayer threads. The afflicted and their friends and families could each pick up a thread from a large bowl which had the inscription 'Every life is Priceless'.
One can see that even a highly modern hospital, the epicenter of science and technology, recognizes that belief is all-powerful, sending out positive vibes. For patients to heal and recover, prayers and God's help are vital.
Belief is something you accept as true and you don’t need any proof for that. It is a sort of Trust, there is no rational reasoning.
The belief and faith although two different things are to guide us to face difficult situation
Belief is rooted in culture and upbringing, and Faith springs from our Atma; and Faith does not fickle.
The True faith, in our God or ISTA Devatha results in our actions, and prayers.
