In this Sarga, the kingmakers go to Bharata and ask him to get crowned. Bharata says that it is in the tradition of their lineage for the eldest of the sons to become the king. And hence he would go to the forest to fetch Rāma to be the king. He orders the entire army to be prepared to go to the Vana with him. He orders workmen to build a road through the impassable forest.
Everyone feels happy and they praise Bharata and wish him well.
2.79.1 தத: ப்ரபாதஸமயே திவஸேऽத சதுர்தஸே ।
ஸமேத்ய ராஜகர்தாரோ பரதம் வாக்யமப்ருவந் ॥
tataḥ prabhātasamayē divasē'tha caturdaṡē ।
samētya rājakartārō bharataṃ vākyamabruvan ॥
At dawn on the fourteenth day, the
kingmakers assembled and said to Bharata:
2.79.2 கதோ தஸரதஸ்ஸ்வர்கம் யோ நோ குருதரோ குரு: ।
ராமம் ப்ரவ்ராஜ்ய வை ஜ்யேஷ்டம் லக்ஷ்மணம் ச மஹாபலம் ॥
gatō daṡarathassvargaṃ yō nō gurutarō guruḥ ।
rāmaṃ pravrājya vai jyēṣṭhaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābalam ॥
Daṡaratha, the supreme of our guides,
has gone to heaven, having exiled Rāma, the eldest,
and Lakshmaṇa, the mighty strong.
2.79.3 த்வமத்ய பவ நோ ராஜா ராஜபுத்ர! மஹாயஸ: ।
ஸங்கத்யா நாபராத்நோதி ராஜ்யமேததநாயகம் ॥
tvamadya bhava nō rājā rājaputra! mahāyaṡaḥ ।
saṅgatyā nāparādhnōti rājyamētadanāyakam ॥
O prince of great renown, you must become our king now.
This realm, though without a King,
has not succumbed to strife or hostility, fortunately!
2.79.4 அபிஷேசநிகம் ஸர்வமிதமாதாய ராகவ! ।
ப்ரதீக்ஷதே த்வாம் ஸ்வஜநஸ்ஸ்ரேணயஸ்ச ந்ருபாத்மஜ ॥
abhiṣēcanikaṃ sarvamidamādāya rāghava! ।
pratīkṣatē tvāṃ svajanaṡṡrēṇayaṡca nṛpātmaja ॥
Having procured all the materials for the crowning,
your people and the representatives of the guilds
wait upon you, O Prince!
2.79.5 ராஜ்யம் க்ருஹாண பரத! பித்ருபைதாமஹம் த்ருவம் ।
அபிஷேசய சாத்மாநம் பாஹி சாஸ்மாந்நரர்ஷப! ॥
rājyaṃ gṛhāṇa bharata! pitṛpaitāmahaṃ dhruvam ।
abhiṣēcaya cātmānaṃ pāhi cāsmānnararṣabha! ॥
Take the kingdom, O Bharata, that has come down
as an indefeasible legacy that came from father to son.
Crown yourself and protect us, O bull among men.’
2.79.6 அபிஷேசநிகம் பாண்டம் க்ருத்வா ஸர்வம் ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் ।
பரதஸ்தம் ஜநம் ஸர்வம் ப்ரத்யுவாச த்ருதவ்ரத: ॥
abhiṣēcanikaṃ bhāṇḍaṃ kṛtvā sarvaṃ pradakṣiṇam ।
bharatastaṃ janaṃ sarvaṃ pratyuvāca dhṛtavrataḥ ॥
Circumambulating the materials assembled for the crowning,
Bharata, steadfast in his mind,
responded to all those people by saying:
2.79.7 ஜ்யேஷ்டஸ்ய ராஜதா நித்யமுசிதா ஹி குலஸ்ய ந: ।
நைவம் பவந்தோ மாம் வக்துமர்ஹந்தி குஸலா ஜநா: ॥
jyēṣṭhasya rājatā nityamucitā hi kulasya naḥ ।
naivaṃ bhavantō māṃ vaktumarhanti kuṡalā janāḥ ॥
In our family, crowning the eldest is
considered to be the right thing to do.
You, who knew this well, must not ask this of me.
2.79.8 ராம: பூர்வோ ஹி நோ ப்ராதா பவிஷ்யதி மஹீபதி: ।
அஹம் த்வரண்யே வத்ஸ்யாமி வர்ஷாணி நவ பஞ்ச ச ॥
rāmaḥ pūrvō hi nō bhrātā bhaviṣyati mahīpatiḥ ।
ahaṃ tvaraṇyē vatsyāmi varṣāṇi nava pañca ca ॥
Rāma, our eldest brother, will be the lord of this land.
And as for myself, I shall live
in the forest for nine years and five.
2.79.9 யுஜ்யதாம் மஹதீ ஸேநா சதுரங்கமஹாபலா ।
ஆநயிஷ்யாம்யஹம் ஜ்யேஷ்டம் ப்ராதரம் ராகவம் வநாத் ॥
yujyatāṃ mahatī sēnā caturaṅgamahābalā ।
ānayiṣyāmyahaṃ jyēṣṭhaṃ bhrātaraṃ rāghavaṃ vanāt ॥
Let a great army be made ready
with all the four mighty divisions.
I shall fetch our eldest brother Rāghava from the forest.
2.79.10 அபிஷேசநிகம் சைவ ஸர்வமேததுபஸ்க்ருதம் ।
புரஸ்க்ருத்ய கமிஷ்யாமி ராமஹேதோர்வநம் ப்ரதி ॥
abhiṣēcanikaṃ caiva sarvamētadupaskṛtam ।
puraskṛtya gamiṣyāmi rāmahētōrvanaṃ prati ॥
Keeping in front of me all these materials
that are well prepared for the crowning,
I shall go to the Vana for fetching Rāma.
2.79.11 தத்ரைவம் தம் நரவ்யாக்ரமபிஷிச்ய புரஸ்க்ருதம் ।
ஆநேஷ்யாமி து வை ராமம் ஹவ்யவாஹமிவாத்வராத் ॥
tatraivaṃ taṃ naravyāghramabhiṣicya puraskṛtam ।
ānēṣyāmi tu vai rāmaṃ havyavāhamivādhvarāt ॥
Then, having crowned Rāma, the tiger among men,
there itself, I shall fetch him,
keeping him in front of me
like the sacred fire from an Yajña.
2.79.12 ந ஸகாமாம் கரிஷ்யாமி ஸ்வாமிமாம் மாத்ருகந்திநீம் ।
வநே வத்ஸ்யாம்யஹம் துர்கே ராமோ ராஜா பவிஷ்யதி ॥
na sakāmāṃ kariṣyāmi svāmimāṃ mātṛgandhinīm ।
vanē vatsyāmyahaṃ durgē rāmō rājā bhaviṣyati ॥
I shall not let this (woman) who is
a mother to me only in name, have her wish.
I shall live in the impenetrable forest
and Rama will become the King.
2.79.13 க்ரியதாம் ஸில்பிபி: பந்தாஸ்ஸமாநி விஷமாணி ச ।
ரக்ஷிணஸ்சாநுஸம்யாந்து பதி துர்கவிசாரகா: ॥
kriyatāṃ ṡilpibhiḥ panthāssamāni viṣamāṇi ca ।
rakṣiṇaṡcānusamyāntu pathi durgavicārakāḥ ॥
Let skilled workmen be set to work,
leveling the ground where it is uneven
and laying the roads.
Let them be helped by a protecting force
that can navigate through the impenetrable areas.
2.79.14 ஏவம் ஸம்பாஷமாணம் தம் ராமஹேதோர்ந்ருபாத்மஜம் ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச ஜநஸ்ஸர்வஸ்ஸ்ரீமத்வாக்யமநுத்தமம் ॥
ēvaṃ sambhāṣamāṇaṃ taṃ rāmahētōrnṛpātmajam ।
pratyuvāca janassarvaṡṡrīmadvākyamanuttamam ॥
When the King’s son spoke thus regarding Rāma,
all the people responded to him
in the best and splendid the words, saying:
2.79.15 ஏவம் தே பாஷமாணஸ்ய பத்மா ஸ்ரீருபதிஷ்டதாத் ।
யஸ்த்வம் ஜ்யேஷ்டே ந்ருபஸுதே ப்ருதிவீம் தாதுமிச்சஸி ॥
ēvaṃ tē bhāṣamāṇasya padmā ṡrīrupatiṣṭhatāt ।
yastvaṃ jyēṣṭhē nṛpasutē pṛthivīṃ dātumicchasi ॥
May the Goddess of Plenty,
whose hand is adorned by a lotus,
ever abide with you, for saying thus,
and wishing to give the earth
to the eldest son of the king.
2.79.16 அநுத்தமம் தத்வசநம் ந்ருபாத்மஜ-
ப்ரபாஷிதம் ஸம்ஸ்ரவணே நிஸ்யம்ய ச ।
ப்ரஹர்ஷஜாஸ்தம் ப்ரதி பாஷ்பபிந்தவோ
நிபேதுரார்யாநநநேத்ரஸம்பவா: ॥
anuttamaṃ tadvacanaṃ nṛpātmaja-
prabhāṣitaṃ saṃṡravaṇē niṡyamya ca ।
praharṣajāstaṃ prati bāṣpabindavō
nipēturāryānananētrasambhavāḥ ॥
Hearing those unparalleled words
uttered clear and loud by the King’s son,
tears of joy emerged from the eyes
and rolled down the faces of the nobles.
2.79.17 ஊசுஸ்தே வசநமிதம் நிஸம்ய ஹ்ருஷ்டா
ஸ்ஸாமாத்யாஸ்ஸபரிஷதோ வியாதஸோகா: ।
பந்தாநம் நரவர பக்திமாந் ஜநஸ்ச
வ்யாதிஷ்டஸ்தவ வசநாச்ச ஸில்பிவர்க: ॥
ūcustē vacanamidaṃ niṡamya hṛṣṭā
ssāmātyāssapariṣadō viyātaṡōkāḥ ।
panthānaṃ naravara bhaktimān janaṡca
vyādiṣṭastava vacanācca ṡilpivargaḥ ॥
And they, along with ministers and the assembly,
answered joyously, all their sorrow vanished:
‘By your orders, O best of men, people loyal to you
and many skilled workers have been
asked to attend to the roads’.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே ஏகோநாஸீதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē ēkōnāṡītitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the seventy ninth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
