My fathers thithi falls on Churthasi. Some people tell that we should not do Mhalayam on Chathurdhasi and should be done on Barani

Doin mahalayam on father's thithi is one of option and not either mandatory or preferable.
If one is not able to select a good special punya kaalam like Mahabharani, Madhyashtami, Gajachaayaa, Mahavyadheepaatam
due to janma stars of family persons or any other reason, then father thithi also considered as an option to do mahalayam.
