Parkinson's Law. . . . . .
PARKINSON'S LAW:
Cyril Northcote Parkinson (1903-1993) gifted Author and Navel historian wrote over 60 books on various subjects from Navel History to Socio-Economic essays and Children's story. In his writings he brought the obvious in his own inimitable humourous style, which later became "Parkinson's Law". He did not mind his best works to be classified in the Libraries not under Philosophy or Economics, but under Humour.
In his works he laments that "the policies of our political leaders represent something very low...architecture over the last 20-30 years has given us buildings without representing a single idea...education has gone to pieces...what went wrong was really a process of what does go wrong in human affairs".
His observations about the Society quoted often have struck cord with the average lot of people.
Here are some given below :
--- Work expands to fill the time available.
--- The fact that the people are busy does not prove there is any thing useful for them to do.
--- The chief product of highly mechanical civilisation is boredom.
--- Expenditure rises to meet the income.
--- Delay is the deadliest form of denial.
To sum up all other he stated:
--- Action expands to fill the void created by human failure.
Parkinson found the bureaucracies as an expanding scourge, expanded regardless of the work allocated to them.
He showed in an essay that Britain's Colonial Office had expanded relentlessly during the years when British empire had been shrinking rapidly.
He evolved a method of writing as a humourist, but with a purpose. There are very few writings of his which are merely funny.
But he said" ...it is the nature of satire to reveal sad truth without suggesting a remedy".
Does he not remind us the famous cartoonist R.K.Laxman ?
