In a very circumstances one may aquire complete fossil impression of RIGHT HANDED SHANKA or DHAKSHINAVRITTI Shanka or VALAMPURI Sangu as a hard stone in full form. This is more a follies impression where Silicon dioxde has taken the form of Shanka perhaps in its molten state and hardened. This manifestation of SHANKA is regarded as MAHALAKSHMI and is worshiped as the way one worships Shaligrama.
A full Shaligrma has a small HOLE in it . If you see through it you will see snail spiral impressions on either side as mirror images.
Perhaps this is what the guru Paramacharya has called as SHALIGRAMA SOOKSHMA SWAROOPAM.
Some time you will get an open one showing the impression of the snail.
Whether the animal lived inside the black stone or got covered by molten lava when earth was born is not known.
It belongs to thefamily of AMMONITE FSSILS and is collected from the Kantaki river in Nepal.
In effect it is the great form of VISHNU. It is important that those who worship Shiva in the form of banalingam has a shaligramam also.
