Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar (1920-2012)
In the death of Bharat Ratna Sitar Maestro Ravi Shankar,on Tuesday 11 December , the world of Music has lost its highly prized possession. He was the brother of the famous Udaya Shanker and started his life as a dancer in his brother's troupe. But branched of to Hindustani Classical Music and had his training under the renowned teacher of Maihar gharana Ustad Allauddin Khan. Ravi Shankar married Ustad's daughter Annapurna Devi.
Pandit Ravi Shankar was one of the highly acclaimed persons in the world of music. He had won many awards from all around the world. A fellow of Sangeeth Natak Academy, recipient of Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna. A winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award, OBE from the Queen Elizabeth II, UNESCO International Music Council, Three Grammy Awards, Kalidas Samman and many more awards in recognition of his talent.
He was one of the first Indian Musicians to spread the knowledge of Hindustani Classical Music in the West and Americas. He was known for his bold experimentation in fusion of various styles in his music. He was associated with AIR for some time, also worked with Satyajit Ray as Music Director for his award winning films.
Though Pandit Ravi Shankar has left the world , his immortal music will remain with us.
