Why Hindu Tamil Brahmins do not perform Marriages in the month of Margazi ?
Lord Krishna said in Bhagavad Gita as I m Margazhi in among 12 months which considered an as great thing and making this month divine.
Brihatsaama tathaa saamnaam gaayatree chandasaamaham; Maasaanaam maargasheersho’hamritoonaam kusumaakarah.
–Bhagavad Gita 10.35
Meaning: Of the Hymns of Vedas, I am the Brihat sama(Part of Sama Veda). Of the Poetic Mantras, I am the Gayathri Mantra. Of the 12 Months, I am Margashirsha Masa. Of the seasons, I am the Kusuma (Spring – flowery season).
But then why this month is avoided by Hindu Tamil Brahmins to do any Marriages, Sumangali Prarthanai Etc ?
This Masa is also called as Shoonya Masa, as per Vedic scriptures.
Because it is considered as inauspicious to do any good things other than Godly functions. It is also known as Dhanur masa since during this month the sun transits through Dhanur Rashi (Sagittarius). Devotees in south India perform Dhanurmasa Vratham and recite Tirupavai (Goddess Andal or Goda Devi compiled works in praise to Lord Vishnu) in this month.
Another explanation is by Sadguru :
Margazhi is a time to bring balance and stability to the system.”
At this time of year, the planet Earth is closest to the sun. In the northern hemisphere, this should have been the hottest month, but it is the coolest because the northern face of the planet is facing away from the sun. The closeness to the sun renders an angle where the sun’s rays are diffused as they hit the planet. They fail to warm the earth as they would have if it were a little away.
That is the effect the Margazhi month has on the human system – it pulls you from the base.
Because of a general pull downward, the muladhara (the foundation chakra), and thus the preservative nature of life, become dominant. All life in the northern hemisphere is at its minimum right now. If you plant a seed, the growth will be slowest at this time, and it will not sprout very well. Since the growth is held back by a certain inertia in the life force, this is a time the body can recoup and preserve itself well. Recognizing this, it is still maintained that there are never any marriages in Tamil Nadu during Margazhi. This is not a time for conception. Even grihastas, or householders, practice brahmacharya for this period.

ஆடி மாதத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டால் அது வெய்யில் குறைந்து நல்ல காற்றோடு இருக்கும்
ஆடிக் காற்றில் அம்மிகூட பறக்கும் என்று சொல்வார்கள்
ஆடிப்பட்டம் தேடி விதை என நிலத்தை உழுது விதை விதைக்க ஏற்ற மாதம் அது
ஆடி வந்தாலே போதும் அம்மனுக்குக் கொண்டாட்டம்தான்
அம்மன் கோவில்கள் எல்லாம் களை கட்டிவிடும்
திருவிழாக்களும் கூழ் ஊற்றுவதும் பொங்கலிடுவதும் என மாதம் முழுவதும் அமர்க்களம்தான்
நோன்புகளும் விரதங்களும் என பெண்களும் குழந்தைகளும் மிகவும் மங்களகரமாக இருப்பார்கள்
மார்கழி மாதத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டால் எண்ணற்றவைகளை சொல்லலாம்
மாதங்களில் அவள் மார்கழி என பெண்ணை வர்ணித்தார் கவி கண்ணதாசன்
உடலை தழுவும் பனிகாற்று எல்லாவற்றிலும் ஒரு குளுமை
மார்கழி மகிமையை என்னவென்று சொல்வது ?
இந்த மாதத்தில் தான் சிவனுக்கு உகந்த திருவாதிரை வரும்
திருவாதிரை ஒரு வாய் களி என சுகமான பண்டிகை
வைகுண்ட ஏகதாசி இந்த மாதம் தான் வரும்
சொர்க்கவாசல் திறக்கும் மாதம்
இந்த மாதம் முழுவதும் விரதம் இருந்து ஆண்டாள் திருமாலைப் பாடினாள்
நமக்கு திருப்பாவை கிடைத்த மாதம் இது
மார்கழி மாத அமாவாசை மூலம் நட்சத்திரத்தில் தான் ஹனுமான் பிறந்தார்
ஹனுமத் ஜெயந்தியும் இந்த மாதம் தான்
மார்கழி மாதத்தில் தான் பாரதப்போர் நடந்தது என மகாபாரதத்தில் வரும்
அப்படியாயின் கண்ணன் உரைத்த கீதையும் அம்பு படுக்கையில் இருந்து
பீஷ்மர் சொன்ன விஷ்ணு சகஸ்ரநாமமும் நமக்கு கிடைத்தது மார்கழியில் தான்
இப்படி அம்பாளுக்கும் சிவனுக்கும் விஷ்ணுவிற்கும் ஹனுமானுக்கும்
விசேஷமாக இருப்பதால் நாம் அவர்களை கொண்டாடாமல்
போய்விடுவோமோ என்று தான் அவை சூன்ய மாதங்கள் என
சூட்சமாக சொல்லி வைத்தார்களோ அந்த கால பெரியவர்கள்
யோசிக்க வேண்டிய விஷயம்தானே?
