Why RAMA NAMA is called as THARAKA MANTHIRA ?
The names ‘Rama’ or ‘Krishna’ are powerful mantras that can alleviate the sufferings of humanity.
RAMA is not just a name. It is a Manthra, the only Manthra that is called Tharaka Mantra. Tharaka Mantra means the one that helps us to cross the ocean of Samsara and free us from the bondage of cycle of birth and death. It is derived from the roots of the two great mantras, the Asktakshara, ‘Om Namo Narayanaya’ and the Panchakshara, ‘Nama Sivaya.
Chanting of this taraka nama Ramá which combines three letters Ra, á, má will bestow on us "Sachithanantham" which is the greatest bliss one can obtain during this birth we had taken now. This bliss assures us of no rebirth hereafter.
Paramacharyal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam in his characteristic simple language has said "There are two powerful 'Taraka Namas'. One is Aum and another is Ramá. All mantras have to be prefixed with Aum for obtaining the benefits of those mantras, whereas there is no need to prefix Aum when the name 'Ramá' is recited because the name itself is 'Tarka Namam' ".
RAMA NAMA , if it is chanted as RAM it is a Manthra, if it is chanted with addition of the word Sri (Sri Rama, Sri Ram) power of Goddess Seeta is added to it.

Sthala Purana of Kaasi (Varanasi) mentions that the Deity of Kaasi, Viswanatha (Lord Shiva) initiates this Tharaka Manthra (RAMA) in the right ear of the people who die in Kaasi.
“Kaasyanthu Maranaan Mukthi” it is believed that one who dies in Kasi will attain Mukthi. Even the Pall bearers repeat; Ram naam sathya hai; the name Rama is the absolute truth.
