Ethics behind Navarathri Golu steps or Padis.
Golu in Tamil means courtyard.
It is the celebration of the victory of good over evil
There is an ethics in constructing steps or Padi for Golu. The Golu consist nine steps or Padi in Tamil. These steps or Padi should not exceed nine. If you wish to keep less than nine steps it should be in odd numbers like 3, 5, and 7.
The philosophy behind the nine steps or Padis for Golu is said as:
We keep golu during Navaratri to show our, gratitude to the Gods, Goddesses, our gurus and all natural elements such as birds, animals, trees, flowers, etc.
To worship Devi Durga goddesses, there are nine ways of worship. They are swarnam, kirthanam, smaranam, paadasevanam, archanam, vandhanam, dasyam, sakyam, atmasevadhanam. This concept is represented in nine steps or Padis. The nine steps or Padis in Golu represent nine planets or Navagrahas.
From the bottom to top, the length of the steps should reduce. For instance, from the bottom, if you keep five feet length for the first step or Padi, then the second step or Padi length should be short than the first one and the third step or Padi length should be shorter than the second one and so on and so forth.

In the doll arrangement we can see Gods, saints and great men above the ordinary human beings dolls and animals below them. If, ordinary human beings have good thoughts and does good to others, they will be raised to great men, then to saints and finally merge with God. On the other hand, if they tend to have bad thoughts and do evil to others he will go down to animal level step by step.
The goal of human beings and the reason why we born on earth are evinced in this wonderful Tamil festival Navarathri Golu. What ever situations we are born in, our prime aim should be to merge with God. Navarathri Golu celebration remains us this.

Navratri is perhaps one of the few festivals that boast of pan-Indian presence. While some parts bring in the festivities with worshipping the fierce form of Durga, some show their enthusiasm with vibrant folk dances, and some with opulent stage dramas. Different states in the country have their different ways of observing these auspicious days, but did you know many of them have very unique ways and rituals?
Sindur Khela, West Bengal
Literally meaning ‘vermillion game’, the exact day and origin of the tradition is unknown, many believing it to be as old as around 400 years. After nine days of festivities, on Vijayadashmi, married women queue up to bid farewell to the Goddess. They first wipe the idol’s face with betel leaves so that she doesn’t depart from her home with tearful eyes and then put sindur on her shakha and pola (bangles worn by married Bengali women), forehead and feet. After this they smear sindur on each other’s forehead and distribute sweets. Sindur Khela is also said to symbolise the power of women as protector of the family.
Vijayadashmi, Himachal Pradesh
Being home to a number of sacred Devi temples, it attracts a huge number of devotees coming here for pilgrimage during Navratri. However, unlike the rest of the country, the celebrations don’t end with Dussehra here. They begin all over again. To the beats of local drums and trumpets, hundreds of local deities accompany Lord Raghunath in a chariot procession to Dhalpur Maidan of Kullu. Festivities continue for the next seven days and end at the banks of river Beas with symbolic burning of the Lanka made of grass and wood.
