Who are Sri Vishnu' Consorts ?
Vedic Consorts of Sri Vishnu:
The Vedas speak of three consorts to Vishnu, Sri, Bhu and Nila. There are three suktams as part of Pancha Suktam and the three suktams are Sri Suktam, Bhu Suktam and Nila Suktam. While the first is part of Rig Veda, the other two are found in Yajur Veda.
(i) Sri Mahalakshmi:
Sri Mahalakshmi is the Hindu Goddess of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), fortune, and the embodiment of beauty. She is the consort of the God Vishnu. She brings good luck and protects her devotees from all kinds of misery and money-related sorrows.
'Maha devyai cha vidmahe
Vishnu patnai cha dheemahi
Thanno Lakshmi prachodayath'
'We would meditate on consort of Vishnu
And let Goddess Lakshmi help us in this'
(ii) Sri Bhudevi:
The Bhu Devi described in Bhu Suktam is “Hiranya Garbhini”, the one who is capable of fulfilling all our wishes ( sarva siddhyai). She is described as not just the land form but also as one who has the waters and the air (jalasayani, vaayumati). That is why we say that Bhudevi contains all that is within or on her. This includes the chetana and the achetana also as per Narayana Suktam. For our understanding we consider her as a physical manifestation.
Bhumi Devi is also believed to be one of the two forms of Lakshmi. The other is Sridevi, who remains with Narayana. Bhudevi is the Goddess of Earth, and the fertility form of Lakshmi.
'dhanudharayai cha vidmahe
Sarvasiddhyai cha dhimahi
tanno dhara prachodayat'
(iii) Sri Niladevi:
Nilasuktham is also known as Vishnu Pathni Suktham or Adithi Suktham. Nila Devi or Adithi who is the creator of the world is addressed here. Though it is well known that Lord Vishnu has two wives Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Bhudevi, the fact that he had a wife called Nila Devi or Adithi is not well known.
'maha devyai cha vidmahe
vishnu patnai cha dheemahi
thanno nila prachodayath'
In Sri Vaikuntha or Paramdhama, Sri Devi is seated to the right of Lord Narayana, and Bhumi Devi and Nila Devi to the Lord’s left.
Legend has it that Nila Devi took the avatar as Nappinnai, the daughter of Kumbagan. He was the brother of Yashoda. Lord Krishna won her hand after conquering the seven ferocious bulls of Her father. In the Divya Prabandha of Alvars and Silappadikaram, the mentioning of Nappinnai can be found.
