Foods to keep your liver healthy
The liver is one of the most important organs of the body, as it performs numerous functions in the body. One of the main function of the liver is breaking down and disposing of toxic substances from the body. If these toxins are not expelled properly due to the inefficiency of the liver they are simply reabsorbed. This in turn leads to various severe complications including cancer. Hence, to keep your liver healthy and prevent various complications, you should follow strict dietary guidelines.
The only way to help the liver secrete greater concentrations of important enzymes (which in turn help you to excrete potential carcinogens from the body) is through consuming foods rich in healthy nutrients and avoiding foods that harm the organ. Here’s a simple dietary guidelines to help you out in this regard.
Here’s what you should eat for a healthy liver -
Broccoli, onion and garlic: These foods are believed to provide sulfur to the body. Sulphur, helps enhance the detoxifying reactions in the liver, and carry out processes that prevent its damage.
Beetroot: This purplish-red root contains pectin, which is very useful in flushing out the toxins from the liver, and does not allow them to be reabsorbed.
Cabbage: It is known for its high levels of sodium, which help in proper disposal and detoxification of the liver.
Carrots: As they are rich in niacin and beta carotene, they are great for the eyes and liver. The niacin helps the liver properly break down substances to release toxins, keeping it healthy and avoiding re-absorption of harmful substances.
Here’s what you should avoid to prevent liver diseases -
Highly processed foods with a large number of additives
Food that is rich in hydrogenated oil
Food with high content of fructose corn syrup, artificial sweetening agents
Alcohol
So the next time you reach out for that bag of chips or that extra peg over the weekend ( for the occasional drinkers), think again.
