WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY TAMIL NEW YEAR

Celebrated on April 14 th in the month of Chitthirai, the Tamil New Year or Varushapirapu is a time to celebrate for Tamilians all over the world. Varusham is the Tamil word for "year" and 'Pirapu' can be translated as the "birth" or "beginning" or "commencement" of an event. Tamilians believe that it was on the Tamil New Year's Day that Lord Brahma started the creation of the world. What is fascinating about the Tamil New Year's Day is that it happens to be the Bengali New Year Day too. Tamilians exchange greetings of "Puthandu Vazthukal", meaning Happy New Year on the auspicious occasion of Tamil New Year. The 14th of April marks the first day of the traditional Tamil calendar and is a public holiday in Tamil Nadu.

During Tamil New Year, the state organizes a huge Car Festival near Kumbakonam, Tiruvadamarudur. In some areas, Chitthirai is also celebrated with great vigor.

According to legendary evidences, this is the same day when Goddesses Meenakshi tied the nuptial lock with Lord Sundareswarar. Every year, the festival of Chitterai Thiruvizha is celebrated on the eve of Tamil New Year at the Meenakshi Temple.
