Acting as deaf is tough!!
(Just for a Change, i am sharing my personal experience )
This has really happened some years back when i was in Chennai
I was then 70 and traveling by bus, a 75 year old sat by the side of me, and immediately started talking to me; asking about where I am getting down etc.
I thought that I should pretend as if I am deaf and put my right hand on my right ear; and just lilted my head a bit.
Trick worked and he thought I am deaf, and raised his voice more.
I still acted as if I did not hear him. he did not leave me also.
He was telling co passengers ‘old deaf people must put hearing aid when traveling alone’. and saw me. I did not show any emotion!!
My testing time came and bus conductor came to me …before he could ask “I told him Avichi School. and gave Rs 20 /- note.
Conductor did not leave me also, and asked me ' give change sir, 13 rupees '
Really I did not have any coin change. and I just looked at the conductor.
75 year old immediately told the conductor: 'Avarukku kadu ketkala." ( he can not hear) ..
Conductor. Looked at me… and I just smiled at him.
Murmuring something.. he gave me 7 rupees balance in coins and a ticket.
15 year old School boy standing by the side of me probably knew I was pretending.
He was just smiling at me. his eyes conveyed that.
I just winked my eyes
My cell phone rang, if I pick up, that 75 year old would know that I am not deaf.
I did not pick up the phone.
My bus stop came, I got down. I did not see that 15 year old also got down
I took my cell phone and talked to my wife, she was scolding me why I did not pick up the phone, and I was told her about that 75 year old passenger asking me so many questions and I pretended …and did not attend your call and looked back, there behind me that boy was laughing at me.
