I found that many are having lot of doubt about mahalayam.
And many are searching for mahalaya tarpanam procedures.

Kaarunika pithrukkal are those relatives of your parents" That is Father's brother. his wife, father's sisters and their husband mother's brothers, their wives, mother's sisters and their husband, daughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law , your son, guru, yajamaanan, friend, . who are there as pithrus, all are coming and staying wth you in this mahalaya paksham period.

For those who have come to your house to bless you, you are giving them food and get aasirvaadhams from them. On all other amavasai days only your father, grand father, father's grandfather, and the same from your mother's side are coming.

Persons who are there in pithru lokam are given permission by YAMA to go and live with their relatives Now they are for 75 days from puratasi krishna paksham pirathamai. Pithrukkal are also devas. Pithru lokam is maintained by some devas who are called visvedevar.

SRATHA DEVATHAIGAL: Vasukkal 8; Rudhrarkal 11; aadithyargal 12. , Ivargal vadeivil srathathai erkindra moonru poorva purushargal pangu perukindranar. If it is father ceremony, father, grand father, father's grand father like this in mother's ceremony.. Visvedevar are 12 in numbers.

Pruravar, aardhravar : these two viswedevars are coming /escorting the pithrus in yearly sratham. In mahalaya paksham Thuru and Ruchi are coming/ escorting the pithrus. In naanthi sathyar and vasu are escorting the pithrus; in sapindeekaranam kaalar, kaamar are escorting the pithrus. In sanyaasi aaraadhanaa sadhu and guru are escorting visvedevars, and in yaagam krathu and dhakshar

are becoming visvedevars and escorting pithrus., WE are giving food for this escorting visvedevar and one for pithru and one for Maha vishnu who is giving the fruits for sratham and protecting us from raakshasas.

my father in laws thithi comes exactly on chaturdasi i.e. the day previous to amavasya.is it correct to perform mahalayam on the thithi or on madhyaashtami

It is always better doing the Sakrun Mahalayam on a punyakaalam than doing it in pitru thithi
because it may fall on a day which is exclusively kept of some kind of persons like sanyasi or durmaraNam etc.
